Chapter 21 - Out to Sea

Lin showed me down to the lower deck of their boat. It seemed bigger than I had first thought it was. They all had sleeping mats set up and I counted five of them. Lin frowned slightly, "You'll have to borrow some blankets from someone."

The smallest bed in the room was hers and she showed me the quilt in pride. 

"I saved up my money so I could buy all these scraps of fabric," She smiled brightly.

"Where do you buy them?" I asked.

"The traveling trade caravan!" She said gleefully, "They only come around if it's safe and no one rules the south or the east so they like to stay in those areas."

"Where are we?" I asked.

"The Great South River," She replied, "On our way out to sea."

I blinked several times.

"Lin!" A boy's voice called, "Don't talk the poor girl's ears off."

"That's my older brother," She quipped, she gestured for me to go back upstairs onto the deck.

Two identical boys gazed at me in wonder.
