"DT-018, Status."
A robotic voice sounded in the mind of the physicist.
"Project DimTrav-018 aka #000 has been executed semi successfully. approximately 910 humans have been relocated to an unknown, but habitable planet in an alternate dimension."
"Fuck...Only that many..." he sighed, shaking his head as he looked around.
"DT-018, how much energy do we have?"
"Approximately 100 million Energy Units"
"Energy units? Elaborate please." he cocked his eyebrow curiously
"After traversing into this new dimension, our electricity has been converted into this strange new, unnamed form, energy units or (EU) among various other changes." replied the emotionless program.
"Have your functions been interrupted in any way?"
"yes. My only remaining functions are prospecting, analysis and acting as a battery."
"Ssshiiit this is bad." the physicist removed his glasses and rubbed his brow. "How many times can you use the prospecting function?"
"500 thousand times."
"Well that's good at the very least. And now that we're here, we're safe from the threat of those blasted blobs." He said, looking around carefully for the first time. "who knows-maybe we'll even be able to find an energy malleable enough to be called magic here." Speaking to himself would soon become a habit.
The world around him was similar-even identical to earth. life bloomed through flowers, trees, bushes, berries, and many other things.
A light flashed deep within his tired eyes "Perhaps...There is already established civilization in this world?" He exclaimed loudly "DT-018 search in a 1000 meter radius around me for signs of civilization."
"your coordinates have been marked on the plane as [0,0]. Searching...."
While DT-018 scanned the surroundings, the physicist walked around, familiarizing himself with this new world.
"Wow..everything's so...square. How curious..." A strange sense of nostalgia tugged at the back of his mind. "DT-018 does this world remind you of something?"
"Searching database...This world resembles a modified version of the world of 'Minecraft', a game released on May 17 2009."
"Oh my god I loved playing that game when I was younger! Is this an identical dimension? What're the chances of that??? Wait..." The physicist shut his eyes for a second, focusing his mind. After a few moments, a panel popped up before him.
A lively, childish grin graced his face for the first time in ages. "This is so fucking cooooool!" His gaze flickered over to a tree "and if I can do that...then I can probably..." He reared his fist back and have the tree a blow with all his strength.
"OWWWEWW" The physicist cried out, rearing back in pain. "THAT FUCKING HURT" he glared at the tree as if it was at fault, but then found something strange-a crack that went all the way through the tree. "Strange...perhaps..."
He tapped the tree again, this time with much less force. As expected, the crack grew wider. "Ahh so that's how you do it!" he grinned and delivered quick, low strength punches with both his hands into the tree until the cracks finally spread through it and the tree gave way, falling away from him directly into a stream of flowing water.
Then the tree magically separated itself into logs, sticks, and strangely, apples.
The physicist picked up the items with a simple thought before he was alerted by DT-018.
"coordinates [681,-700] shows signs of civilization"
His eyes widen in joy and surprise "Perhaps a village?" The physicist ran in the direction dictated by DT-018, excitement coursing through his veins as his childhood flooded back to him.
Suddenly, as he closed in on the location he stopped. Not due to his inexplicable speed, no-due to a walking skeleton, clattering around the landscape before him surrounding an ornate structure with a turquoise roof and dark walls.
"Is this the location DT-018?" He murmured quiet as he could, for fear of being heard by the skeletons.
DT-018's voice rang out in his head, just as loud as usual. "Yes."
"Fuck."
"I suggest you watch the star that orbits this world. Nighttime can be deadly in certain regions of our own world." DT-018's voice rang out once more in the physicist's head, prompting him to look up.
The star had already nearly dipped past the horizon. He had appeared in this world late in the day, and had spent quite a bit of time experimenting.
"Shit." panic suddenly flooded his eyes. He wasn't equipped OR prepared for a fight-he was just a physicist! "I need a base. Let's see..." he opened his inventory and attempted to craft planks of wood. Unsuccessfully.
"What?? WHy???" the physicist let out an exasperated sigh. "I guess it's time to dig a hole... hopefully the rest of humanity can survive the night." He punched the ground till it gave way three times, and then placed one of the blocks of dirt he got above his head, praying it didn't fall on him or cause him to suffocate from lack of oxygen.
It did not. But it DID leave him in complete darkness.
He sighed once more and slumped to the ground, knees to his chin.
"HAaaaa time to wait..."
DT-018's voice rang out in his head suddenly, startling him. "I have been receiving signals from an unknown for the past five minutes. Would you like to check them?"
"Oh shit, yes yes I would like to check them. Obviously." replied the physicist.
"I will try my best to translate and record this message." Suddenly, a feminine voice rang out in his mind.
"Hello dimensional breacher. I hope this message reaches you. I am the goddess and ruler of this dimension. "
"Oh no..." sweat beaded on the physicist's brow.
The female voice continued to speak. "Your entry into this dimension has caused great damage to my facilities, and has consequently allowed my enemies and many dreads of the universe to awaken again." The voice paused for a moment "I shall now make you an offer, as you are the single most capable individual to have entered this world."
"Go on..." said the physicist, as though the message could hear him.
"I need you to fix the problems you caused. In exchange, I will allot u something an intelligent, curious mind as yours will surely find very useful. I will also allow your kind permanent residence in my dimension."
"but why...you may as well kill us and lay those dreads back to rest..." murmured the physicist.
"Well that's just the thing-I can't, I've spent too much energy repairing the crack in dimensions to do anything apart from slowing the dreads from getting to you which I will do, of course. And I'm also not as cruel as to turn away the remains of such a fabulous race."
"Oh.. I- wait you can hear me?"
"Yes I can." replied the voice. "so ask me anything before I must rest again."
"Why me...? Why not one of your own creations, 'goddess'"
"Well quite frankly it's because you're the best option I have right now. You are the pinnacle of a race with insurmountable talent and flexibility. And you may not believe my identity, but believing my words is wisest for this moment, and I believe you know that."
"What if I refuse."
"I will not slow the dreads and you will suffer an eternity of torment."
"Very well then! I accept your offer!"
"Good. Here-consider my side of the deal complete. I shall combine my gift's function with that strange device of your creation that has adapted to my world's energy."
A strange glowing book drops into the hands of the physicist, after which it shrinks and shoots into his forehead.
