Rayne POV
The wind howled through the forest as Mateo and I stumbled into the cave. My body ached through, my legs trembling with exhaustion and tiredness, but the tension in Mateo's frame kept me alert and active.
"Stay here," he said, his voice low and menacing.
"Mateo—"
"Stay," he repeated, gripping my shoulder. "I'll check the tunnels. Don't move a bit."
I nodded reluctantly, sinking onto the cold stone floor as he disappeared into the dark shadows. The silence around me was deafening, broken only by the occasional drip of water echoing through the cavern. My fingers curled into my palms, the memory of the shadow wolf's glowing eyes still fresh in my mind, like a new injury.
Kael's face flashed in my thoughts, his voice telling me to run back to him and save him. Guilt clawed at me. What if he hadn't made it out from those evil wolves?
