Rayne POV
The morning light filtered into the cave through a small crack in the stone ceiling, casting jagged streaks of gold across the damp walls. I rubbed my arms, trying to shake off the chill that had settled within my bones. Mateo sat a few feet away, sharpening his dagger in tense silence, that wasn't going easy in me.
Xavier was nowhere to be seen, but his presence lingered like a shadow around, unsettling and magnetic all at once.
"Where do we go from here?" I asked quietly, breaking the silence in the cave.
Mateo didn't look up at me.
"Away from him."
"You mean Xavier?"
"Yes, Rayne, I mean Xavier," Mateo snapped, his tone sharper than the blade he was holding.
"We can't stay here any longer. Rogues like him don't help out of kindness unless they need to devour you."
I frowned, wrapping my arms around my knees. "He saved us last night. Doesn't that count for something good he did for us?"
