Chapter 1 - What if Molly

Sonja and I are exploring the city in case we needed a place to escape. I heard a strong heartbeat that disturbed me badly. I turned around to see Molly following us. She was twelve paces away. I told Sonya about her and we had to bolt. Molly followed us with her enhanced limbs. We crossed the street and made it to the other side while she had to wait till it was possible to use the cross walk. I finally found an officer and told him that a psycho was following us with a gun. He didn't need further explanation. We hailed a cab as Molly crossed the road. She tried to push her way towards us but the officer and his friend stopped her.

We asked the driver to take us to the city center. He took fifteen minutes to get there. We paid the man and walked towards the subway. We got a ticket and tried to make it back to Ravens Gate Academy before she found us. There were soldiers who were checking our temperatures at every portal. There were small kiosks selling fake silver and other anti vampire and anti werewolf essentials. There was a large screen blaring the news of those who had volunteered to get the vaccine. The people in the lab coats looked apprehensive. One even looked like he wanted to jump out and say that the vaccine needed time. He was fighting the urge to yank the mike off the guy who was prattling about the efficiency of this chemical marvel. A few passersby actually rolled their eyes.

A train stopped not far from where we were. As the doors opened I smelled blood. I turned around and saw Molly walk out of the train. Her shirt had a slight blood stain. I can see that her eyes were trained on us since I knew she had x-ray vision. She knew that I can't use my gifts here without attracting attention. So she observed what I would do. I simply took Sonja's hand and dragged her to the bathroom. As soon as we got I made us invisible and got us out. The trick was to be as quiet as possible. We snuck into the train and had to stay invisible till we got out on the next stop.

We got out and found a place where we can be visible. We searched for an ATM to get some money so we could get a cab to take us to school. We found one willing to make the trip. The cab took a winding road to the school when we heard a bike. I knew it was her before Sonja saw her. I asked the driver to go faster since the person after us is a psycho. He ignored us till the bike slammed into us and she jumped on the roof. He said a few swear words and stepped on it. The car sped to about a hundred miles an hour as she slid off. She had a sly grin as her feet touched the ground we locked the door on both sides as she pretended to give us a head start. She ran to keep up with us. I saw the groundskeeper so I told the man to honk. He did as he was told. The old man saw Molly and called it in. This didn't deter her as she tried to keep up with us.

The gates opened as we got close to it. Security came out and Molly turned around and ran back towards the city. I guess she didn't want her father to find out about this. The headmistress made sure to inform him and he apologized profusely. The man was exhausted but still he said that he will put down the foot. The headmistress spent an hour talking to him before he hung up. We got another cab once I was certain that Molly had gone home. We reached the RV and paid the man and tried to figure out what to do. Thankfully it was just us. Sonja asked me to transform into the disguise version of me for protection. I changed my appearance immediately.

The Bilyk women arrived with groceries and asked us if we had fun. We nod our heads but Irene sensed that something was off. She waited until we were alone before she asked us what happened. We explained about Molly and she was furious. She was frightened when I said her top had bloodstains on it. The others shuddered at the thought of Molly harming someone. We all prayed for the quick recovery of the injured. Dinner time was a quiet affair. We ate dinner and I stayed indoors to protect everyone. The women felt that it would be best that they move to an apartment.

They sold the RV and bought an apartment near the city center. I was apprehensive but I was assured that I would be alright. I had to keep an eye out for Molly. That girl is persistent in her pursuits. It was a three room apartment and it came with a fire escape. We had to come up with a game plan to get Molly off our backs. The TV came to our rescue when it said the going outside is now restricted. Permits are required to go outside. They are setting up a website where we can acquire the permit. The permit must be taken a day in advance. One permit per person. This government document is valid only for an hour. The same person has to wait three days before getting another permit. This means Molly can't roam around anyway she likes.

I extended my senses and found out that she is about eight blocks from where we were. I resolved to keep an eye on her so that my excursions will be uninterrupted. The others concurred. We had dinner and I sat down to search my laptop to find out what was going on. The internet was down but the dark web was still active. I was able to chat with a few people about what was going on. One of them said that the vaccine is unstable. It has caused some trouble with the CDC and the military. Some were considering pulling the plug. They were arrested and were replaced with others. The rumor was that someone had hacked the system and changed the formula. So now the vaccine doesn't cure but hurts.

I informed the others about Molly's whereabouts and they promised to be extra careful. Thankfully we had enough food to last a few months. So going out is not necessary. The real problem would be when we are going back to the Academy. Sonja's mom called the hotline to find out. Thankfully a car was arranged to take us back to the Academy. After a few minutes she hung up and sat down to think about the future. I continued typing till I hacked into the CCTV cameras. I got to see the blind spots of the city. If I use them correctly I can walk the entire city without showing up on the monitors.

Molly got a permit to roam the city and she tried to drive to the outskirts of the Academy. But with the road closures, check points and the tight traffic her time was up by the time she saw her hiding spot. She was forcefully escorted to her home twice and once they almost opened fire. She had spent the night in holding. Her father had to deactivate her limbs. All in the effort to keep her cybernetic limbs a secret. She was grounded and was warned that if she overexert herself than her mechanic limbs will malfunction. This sobered her for a day.

I realized that Irene forgot to buy the first aid kit. I got permission and walked around to get one. I wandered mindlessly till I felt a sharp inhale. I look up to see Molly. Oh Crap I walked by her house. I turned around immediately to walk in the opposite direction. I heard Molly begging her dad to let her. He had a work permit that allowed him to be out for six hours. She discovered her father had already left for work. She knew the trouble she would be in if she got caught. I kept walking till I found a check point. I showed him my permit and asked for the nearest pharmacy to buy a first aid kit. He happily gave me directions. I showed a picture of Molly and warned him that she is big trouble. I recommended that he arrest her.

I got out of the pharmacy and saw Molly was about fifteen feet away. I started walking as fast as my legs would let me. I had to get in a queue so I could get past a checkpoint. There were men with guns so I could sense Molly's apprehension. I saw her take a  different path. I saw that she had found a way to skip the checkpoints and make her way through half the city. I decided that I will memorize these routes as well. As I walked through the checkpoint I sensed that Molly was waiting for me so I walked towards the library. She walked in my direction. And I waited till I was near an SUV before I ducked out. I knew she would be using x-ray vision so I took advantage of it. I waited till she reached the pavement and crossed the street. I looked up to see a CCTV camera pointed at me.

I got up and walked away as Molly had to wait till two eighteen wheelers went by. I extended my senses for safety and felt a baseball bat thrown my way. I caught the bat and placed the first aid kit on top of a mailbox before facing Molly. I extended my senses to feel that there were no security cameras. I whizzed past her at bullet speed. She didn't even notice. She blinked to see that I was missing. She looked around and I wiped my fingerprints from the bat. I used a wet wipe to hold it. I came at full swing and whacked her on the back of her head. I dropped the bat and grabbed the first aid kit. I made myself invisible. A few minutes later I realized that I had somehow deactivated her x-ray vision. I happily celebrate my victory as I imagined how she is going to explain this to her dad.

I saw a police officer so I made myself invisible and ran till I reached Irene's apartment. I ran up to tell them what had happened. We all held hands and became invisible for twenty minutes. Molly saw the police officer so she quietly walked past the apartment complaining that her x-ray vision was gone. She is going to be in big trouble when her father comes home. She looked around and said that she saw things like a normal person. She expressed her hate of normalcy. The officer demanded to know who was out without permission. She quietly cursed and hastened her pace.

We sat down to watch the news as people came out in their thousands to protest this breach of civil liberties. People were arrested and dragged to the police station. We flipped channels to another where a man was being interviewed. He was praised for being brave at the face of danger. When a man interrupted the interview saying the people had gone crazy. He saw with his own eyes a deranged man biting a child. He thinks some sort of drug is out and about. The reporter asked the man if he was saying that drugs are the cause. He was shaking head to toe as he stood by his choice. The reporter thanked them both and signed out.
