Chapter 4 - What if Hiatus

My guards are all dead and I am all alone in this fortress. I am bored so I decided to get out. I changed my looks and found someone who is an expert with fake IDs. I took the identity of Malory. A deaf girl working at a record store. I spend my days with my head down for the most part. Occasionally I would see a corrupt cop or a dirty politician. One day I recorded a crazy fight between a group of strangers. I reported it to the police. Two men arrived to interview me. I showed them the video and was assured that I was protected. They promised me that the crooks will be caught.

After they left I extended my senses as always and heard a conversation between two strangers. They were talking about me. I knew that I was discovered. I was dealing with a crooked cops. I quietly snuck out of the fire escape and walked to my car. I waited till they ransacked my apartment before they went back to their cars. I was given strict orders to remain hidden. I can use my abilities but I can't get caught and I have to make sure no one thinks supernatural.

I waited till they were far away from the apartment. I checked the surroundings for a CCTV camera before I shoved an empty water bottle into the exhaust pipe. I used a knife to slash the tires. They got out of the car and I pulled the kit they had in mind for me and injected one of them with it. The next one was easier. I used hypnosis and asked him to shoot himself in the head. I didn't like the Svengali thing but it was the only thing that came to mind. I walked off as the guy that I injected the drugs choked his last breath. I heard a very distinct bang. I looked around for any witnesses before I walked back to my apartment.

One of the detectives was there and he had arrested another man who was there to harm me. The man was talking about a corrupt cop who stole from the drug dealer. The man was grateful that I was absent since I could have ended up dead. I was asked to move elsewhere but I had nowhere else to go. The detective took me to his apartment. I was told not to open the door unless it was him. He wasn't sure how deep the corruption goes. So until it was settled I was told to stay hidden. No problem. I have hiding from people for over a half a century. This is as easy as breathing.

I promised to be on my best behavior as I was given the keys. I wore a medical mask and huge sunglasses to make sure no one recognized me. I pretend to be sick to make sure that I wasn't harassed. This worked for the better part of a month. The neighbors got a little suspicious so they asked him about me. He lied saying I was his sister. I was here after a messy divorce so I just needed some space. The people became a little sympathetic. A few would come with food or just to talk.

I was fixing breakfast when I heard a gunshot. I knew that my problem would increase. I texted detective Flume and he asked me to use the fire escape and go to a motel not far from the highway. He promised to come get me when things were normal. I packed my things in record time and walked out the fire escape. I hoped that no one would notice me. I got a cab and asked him to take me to Cribs Motel. He gave me a dirty look as he started the engine.

I paid the man and found the place empty. There was no one at the front desk. The place has been empty for the past eight years. I was all alone again. I didn't like the isolation but decided to take the high road. I opened the door to all the rooms except one. This one was locked to dupe anyone who came looking for me. I hid in the one room no one would think of searching. Maybe because no one knew it even existed. It was behind the front desk. The shower was temperamental. Some days it would work but most days it refused to work. I would have to collect water from the nearby stream to take a bath.

One day while I was out collecting water a group of armed men came to get me. These were people who serve the bad cops. They walked up the stairs in the hopes to capture me or kill me. When the door opened a grenade unpinned itself and blew up. The men were temporarily incapacitated. I was halfway back when I heard the bang. I knew trouble had shown up. I made myself invisible and walked back to see eight men armed and ready. I snatched a fifty caliber pistol and shot one in the head. Then I had to duck and cover till I was sure that I was safe.

The next one I shot was by the ice box. His friend looked everywhere but found nobody. He walked to the vending machine and got one between the eyes. The next one got shot in center mass. The rest ran scared thinking the place was haunted. But like I said no eye witnesses so I had to shoot them all before they reached their car. I went back to the forest and scrubbed any trace of gunshot residue before I made myself visible. I came out to see the Flume was here with his new partner. We got in the car and the guy started asking questions. I ignored the guy as a rule as I watched the scenery change.

We stopped by a diner and I signed that I wanted to use the bathroom. They were eating fries as I snuck out to grab a blood bag. I found a blood drive and grabbed the freshest one before zipping off to drink it. When I came back the others noticed that I looked healthier. I smiled as I signed a thank you. Suddenly the partner grabbed my head and tried to smash it into the table. The only thing she managed to get was my cap. I managed to wriggle out. Flume took out his gun and the two screamed at each other as I quietly walked out of the place. The woman was shot in the abdomen. An ambulance arrived and I was taken back to his apartment.

Flume was going through a messy divorce so he would spend most of his days away from the house. I on the other hand watched TV and tried meditation. Other than cleaning the place I felt like those tv wives whose whole life revolves around handling stubborn stains and vermin infestation. This declaration would have my mother on the floor laughing her pants off. Batou would be teasing me about the washing machine. I still kick the thing on a few occasions since I still have a hate for the thing.

Soon the trails began and my protection became more challenging. I stayed in a hotel with four FBI agents watching my every move. I used the stairs since I know it is safer. Hours before the trail was about to begin. A psychopath and his goons walked and initiated lockdown protocol. The shutters came down on the windows. The exit doors were locked. One of the Feds watching me used the override codes to let the bad ones in. I had to be invisible as I watched this nasty woman shoot her fellow Feds in the head. She had the goons shoot her in the arm. I snuck out as discussion progressed about me. I used the override codes till I reached the security booth. I deactivated the cameras and walked back upstairs.

I found the first crook with his gun pointed at the elevator. I twisted his neck and grabbed his gun and comms. The next one was on the floor below my designated one. He was smoking a cigarette as he viewed the street between shutters. I shot him in the back of his head and watched as his brain was all over the window. The next crook was by the stairs. I used the taser and then I shot him in the head. The next was the bad FBI agent. I quietly made myself visible. She was on the phone when I shot her in the head. The moment she fell to the floor the door burst open and a man in a long overcoat came out with a machine gun and opened fire. Thankfully I was faster than the bullets so I managed to evade getting shot.

He and four others kicked the stairwell doors and spread out to find me. I crawled up the ceiling and remained invisible. The men searched the adjacent floors but came up empty. One of them kicked a pot plant and emptied his entire magazine into a wall. He forgot to reload the gun as he searched for me. His buddy was about to enter the bathroom when I shot him in the head. Empty magazine waltzed in and I waited till he was kneeling at his friend before I shot him as well. Two down three to go.

The other two were easy. The psychopath realized that I am not what meets the eye so he tried a different approach. He took off his shoes and placed them by the curtains. He placed his coat on the armchair and hid in the cupboard. I happily threw an empty magazine at the table near him and he jumped out and started shooting. I stayed by the cupboard and watched him try to smoke me out. He taunted me several times. I ignored him as a rule. I sat down on the table by the door and swung my legs back and forth. He made funny noises that made me chuckle. Rookie mistake. I had to jump out of the way as he sprayed the wall with bullets.

I led him on a merry chase all over the hotel only to lead him back to the room I was in. I smashed the door on his face. He walked in staggering as his wiped his bloody nose. I stuck my leg out and he fell face first. I was given strict orders for no exposure so I wore gloves as I broke his neck. I took a bottle of Jack Daniels and emptied its contents on him and set him on fire. I walked back down and destroyed the records for the past four days. I walked out the front door still invisible. I walked to my old apartment where I had hidden my money and spare clothes. I went back to Falk's apartment in a new disguise and asked him to give me a new ID. He asked me my name. I said my name is Janice but I want a new name. He gave me the name Bella. He made me a new fake IDs in five hours. I went back to the record store as another deaf girl. Note to self: stay out of other people's business.
