Chapter 42 - 42 Curiosity Killed The Cat

The United States has many military bases overseas. These bases, besides housing soldiers, also have research labs where projects that are unsuitable for domestic study, or those that may cause significant contamination, are conducted.

This is the second purpose of the United States's military bases overseas.

The navy base in Yokosuka operates on the same principle. During a routine exploration, the military discovered a fossil frozen beneath the Arctic glaciers. Research revealed that it contained active cells, so they brought it back for study. However, the results showed that these active cells were extraordinarily powerful and possessed a terrifying ability to infect, the source of which was a special virus within the cells.

Thus, the military began researching this virus, using many test subjects, including human corpses. The outcome of the experiments is what is now contained within those pillars outside.

Leading this experiment was Professor John Cavin, and the two women in front of Altair, one named Audrey and the other Maya, were assistants to Professor John.

Professor John's research had made little progress, but infections were rampant, which frustrated the military as they felt the pace was too slow. They demanded that Professor John speed up the research; after all, funding doesn't come for free, and there were many leaders in the military base waiting to spend it.

To expedite the research, Professor John attempted live subject experiments, using the most common material for such experiments, monkeys.

Initially, the monkey that was injected with the virus showed no signs of trouble. However, a day later, when Professor John came to observe it, the monkey suddenly mutated, tearing open its cage and killing Professor John.

Audrey and Maya were so frightened that they quickly hid inside the laboratory, locking the door and sending out a distress signal.

The distress signal was sent, but at the same time, the monkey-zombie had already broken free, rampaging through the base and killing the soldiers who were coming down to rescue them. After killing those soldiers, the most terrifying event occurred; the soldiers were devoured by the monkey, which then underwent another transformation, turning into a massive lump of flesh that absorbed the soldiers' bodies and began to consume everything in its path.

All the soldiers in the base were consumed, and those who weren't eaten were infected by the virus, turning into zombies. The infection rate of the zombie virus started slow but rapidly increased, from a day of incubation to just a few minutes, leading to a biochemical crisis that spread across Japan and even the world.

"But when it broke out, it was actually five days ago."

"Five days ago? So, it's been five days since that monkey got outside?"

"Yes. What's the situation like out there now?"

"The situation outside is terrible. The entire Japan has likely been engulfed by this viral crisis, with countless deaths. It's not just Japan; the whole world is facing an outbreak because infected individuals have spread the virus everywhere."

"What?"

"In this country, there are probably fewer than a quarter of the population left alive."

After saying this, Altair felt he was overestimating the situation; having a quarter left would be remarkable. He suspected that in the main city, the remaining population might not even be one-tenth.

"As for other countries, I'm not sure, but I estimate that the more densely populated areas have seen the most deaths."

In densely populated areas, the spread is too rapid, while sparsely populated areas have seen little movement, like Greenland or Iceland, where there aren't many people. Even if the virus were to reach them, it would take a long time to find anyone to infect.

"Oh my God, what have we done to bring such a disaster to the world!"

"Now, give me all your previous research data and virus samples. I'll take care of this mess."

Having learned the general situation, Altair wasted no time.

"You two, organize all the data related to the virus. I'm going out for a bit but will be back shortly to study."

After saying this, without caring about the confused expressions on their faces, Altair directly left the lab, running at full speed. His legs transformed into wheels, propelling him out of the laboratory and through the tunnels, returning to the pit filled with the stench of shredded flesh.

Altair paused briefly, found a slope, and charged up it, using his wheeled legs to speedily ascend and reach the surface.

Upon landing, Altair looked toward the base's entrance and saw a Humvee that had been flipped over by the shockwave, scratching his head in frustration.

'Forget it, I'll just have to look for it; it shouldn't be far.'

Earlier, when fighting the monsters, Altair had instructed Saeko to stay away. Now, he needed to find her, as there were still many parkour zombies outside, and it definitely wasn't safe for her to remain out there.

Fortunately, Saeko wasn't far, engaging in battle with some parkour zombies just a block away.

When Altair found her, she was swiftly decapitating zombies with the lightsaber he had given her. Compared to her previous attempts with a wooden sword, the enhancement the lightsaber provided was significant... each swing cleanly severed a zombie's head. Even parkour zombies couldn't get close to her; as long as they were within her range, their heads would suddenly disappear.

Even the aberrant types were no exception!

Altair didn't intervene to help Saeko, as she didn't need it, and her speed in clearing them out was impressive. Within less than a minute, Saeko had eliminated all the parkour zombies rushing at her. Standing atop a small mountain of zombie bodies, her face was filled with excitement.
