I stood there, feeling my pulse race in my chest, all the while Lucien's piercing stare was fixed on me. I almost broke for a second because he was waiting for a response, for me to explain what was wrong. I almost told him everything about the treachery, the agreement, and Alec. However, I was unable to. Not right now. Not with that much on the line.
After struggling to speak, I eventually mumbled, "I'm just stressed." It's the conflict. Everything, even the rogues. It has been bothering me.
With his eyes narrowing slightly as if he was attempting to read between the lines, Lucien regarded me. Even though my hands were trembling, I tried to maintain my composure while telling the falsehood. I had no idea what I would do if he found out.
