In the dark of night, the first note arrived under my door, wrapped in a tiny, crumpled piece of paper.
Thinking it was only a fragment blown in by the hall draft, I almost missed it. However, when I stooped to pick it up, I noticed something about how well and precisely it was folded. My heart pounded, and I unfurled it, my fingers trembling a little.
"You don't realize how near they are. Take caution.
It stated nothing more. There was no signature and no indication of who could have left it. It was only those words, scrawled in haste. I gazed at it for a while, feeling a knot in my gut. I knew without a doubt that this was a warning. However, from whom? What is it about?
I tried to get rid of the sense of dread that descended over me as I tucked the letter into the drawer of my nightstand. There was little need in making hasty judgments. Perhaps it was simply a sick joke, a hoax.
