Lucien's distrust spread around the pack home like an ominous fog. I could sense it in the way he questioned even the tiniest facts and in the way he looked at people. He seemed to have surrounded himself with a wall that kept everyone else out. Even worse, I could sense the wall erecting between us.
I first believed it was just stress and the weight of his responsibilities. But his manner became more aloof and defensive every day. He started holding secret meetings that even I was not permitted to join and meeting with the guards at strange hours. He seemed to be searching for something or someone that only he could see.
I made every effort to be near him and soothe him, but every time I said anything about Alec or the rogue assaults, his eyes grew stern. He would only nod, his eyes averted, as if he was already preoccupied with his own thoughts and suspicions.
