Chapter 17 - Chapter 16

[Marrick's POV]

"What do you mean, it's not ours?" Marrick asked the scout.

"It doesn't matter, knucklehead..." The scout sighed at Marrick and radioed his commander. "Sir, where did the artillery came from?"

"No idea, son! One thing is for sure, it's not ours." The commander replied.

As the dust settled, and the explosions ended, Marrick saw two SynthMechs from his scope. "I am sure that's not ours as well!"

"Command, be advised. We are seeing two SynthMech suits!" The scout reported and continued, "We don't have any anti-SynthMech weapons with us."

"Copy that, sentinel!" The commander replied and silence followed.

"What now?" Marrick asked the scout.

"If I were you, I'd shut up. The moment they know of our position, we are toast." The scout warned Marrick.

After the short radio silence from the commander. Dorothy West, from the Hollander Mall, took over and said to the scout, "To the units on the southeast route. Do not engage, I repeat, do not engage the enemy. Help is heading your way!"

"Roger, ma'am." The scout replied to the transmission and then the commander took over, "You hear that, son? Do not engage and remain as a lookout. We will do our best here not to get annihilated."

"Roger, sir!" The scout replied.

Adjusting the sight of his scope. Marrick saw the ruins of the vehicles and the scattered bodies of the militias on the ground. There were only a few survivors, but were being taken down one-by-one by the unknown SynthMechs.

Marrick was nervous. He feared for the worst as the SynthMechs were closing in their position. Seeing the jet black humanoid monstrosities, covered with silverish armor on the torso and parts of its arms and legs. It gave him the shivers.

"I know that those monstrosities are scary. What is scarier is when you meet them within visual range. Calm yourself down!" The scout said, noticing Marrick's fears.

Meanwhile, at the ground level near the civilians hiding. A group of special operators arrived and met with the commander, who was smoking a cigar. The doppelgänger, revealed herself to them. It was Dorothy Dawn as she introduced herself to them.

"Sir, we are from the extraction team. We are here to get the package." The captain, leading the group, said.

"What about the others?" The commander asked.

"I am sorry sir, those our are orders." The captain of the extraction team replied.

The commander sighed and then replied, "Very well, if that is your orders."

Dorothy Dawn nodded at the commander and went with them.

"Take care of yourself, ma'am!" The commander said and saluted at her.

"There's no need, commander." Dorothy Dawn said and continued, "It is nice knowing you, and I am grateful for your service!"

At the rooftop of the building, the scout and Marrick continued to observe the situation. While looking at his scope, the scout received a radio transmission from the commander on the ground, who informed him, "This is Command. The team successfully retrieved the package. The couriers are now delivering the doppelgänger to extraction."

"Roger that, command. What do you want us to do?" The scout asked the commander.

"The couriers are heading southwest from our location. They are taking an alternate route. I believe that path is clear from obstruction." The commander replied.

"Yes sir, it is. I saw movement as well. Are those the couriers?" The scout asked again.

"Yes, son, they are! Please guide them to safety." The commander ordered.

"Roger that, sentinel out!" The scout ended his radio transmission.

"This is Doppelgänger to Sentinel!" Dorothy Dawn said to the scout after the commander's radio transmission. "I would like to thank you in advance for guiding us in this ordeal. I place my fate in your hands."

"No need for your kind words, ma'am!" The scout said and continued, "I will guide you safely."

[Dorothy Dawn's POV]

The captain of the extraction team navigated through the streets and paused. He signaled everyone to take cover as he slowly went to cover as well. Before him was a wall, and he took a peek from the other side.

"I see movement, one hundred meters away." The captain said.

"This is sentinel. I confirm of enemy militants in your area." The scout said to the captain.

"You should have warned us earlier!" The captain said to the scout.

"My apologies. Anyway, there are five militants north of your position. Two at the east, I suggest taking out them out first." The scout suggested.

The captain signaled three of his men to confirm of what the scout had told them. They signaled in reply after confirming what he said to be true.

Dorothy hid for cover near a building. Two mercenaries were at her back, keeping watch and to make her safe.

"Two bandits eliminated!" The captain told the team.

"We need to move, ma'am!" One of the mercenaries told Dorothy. She stood up after and followed the men as they rushed to the rally point.

"There are five militants in front of us. I would like all of you to deal with them silently." The captain briefed his men.

"Roger!" His teammates replied.

As the captain and his men prepared to attack the militants. The scout suddenly radioed them, "Halt, everyone stay frosty! I am seeing movement west of your position!"

The captain looked at his men, whose face painted with disappointment, and asked to the scout, "What is it this time?"

"I am seeing more enemies in your area. I suggest rerouting to the east of your position." The scout replied.

"That would take us longer…"

The scout interjected and said, "We can't risk the package. The doppelgänger's safety is at the priority!"

The captain rescinded and replied, "You are right…" Then looked at Dorothy behind of their position.

"Change of plans!" He radioed his men.
