Downtown
2000 Hours
[Dorothy Dawn's POV]
In the darkness of the night, Dorothy Dawn and the extraction team were only a kilometer away from the port area. The sound of aircraft from above alerted them and they took cover as planes pass by overhead."Did they see us?" Dorothy asked the captain.
"I don't think so, ma'am." The captain replied and continued, "We cannot see whose aircraft were those. We have to hurry!"
Leaving their cover, the extraction team doubled their pace as they navigate the streets of the downtown. It would only take eleven minutes to get into the submarine. Dorothy was worried that the submarine may become a target for airstrikes.
"Where is our SynthMech unit?" Dorothy asked the captain, who did not know any idea of what she was talking about. "Figures… I shouldn't have asked!"
"This is Dorothy West. Doppelgänger, what's the situation?" Dorothy West radioed Dorothy Dawn.
"We are ten minutes to extraction. What's the situation there?" Dorothy Dawn asked her counterpart.
"Not good. We are close to being overwhelmed here. Please, take care of Bob when you get out safely." Dorothy West replied with gunshots blaring on the background.
"Say, Dawn! Save that drink for me too… Make sure we can have that party when this is all over!" Major Adams said in the background."Man down! Everyone, retreat!" Major Adams ordered everyone in the background.
"Ma'am… We don't have time. We have to move!" The captain of the extraction team said.
Dorothy Dawn stood up and then ended the radio transmission. She followed the captain on their way to the port.
At five hundred meters away, the captain stopped the team and ordered everyone to take cover. Bullets zipped as they missed their targets."Sniper fire, take cover!" The captain warned and everyone retreated fifty meters away behind an abandoned storage.
"Is it ours?" A sergeant asked the captain.
"Our IFF should have warned them of our arrival!" The captain yelled at the sergeant.
Dorothy, was out of cards. Her only hope was Andre, on his SynthMech which was out reach at the moment. The enemy were peltering them with accurate sniper fire. Situation was getting desperate for them.
"What should we do, captain!?" Dorothy asked with urgency in her voice. The captain was silent, observing his surroundings while looking for an alternate route.
"We are close, damn it! You have to do something or I should have your ass handed!" Dorothy yelled at him.
"Damn it!" The captain exclaimed. Looking at his flank, he saw ruins of a building and a perfect place for cover. It was fifty meters away from him.
"What now, Captain!?" Dorothy yelled again.
The captain, feeling the pressure, replied, "We can use that ruin for cover, ma'am."
[Marrick's POV]
Meanwhile, Marrick, with his night vision and infrared goggles, was observing the two SynthMechs. They were not doing anything and were in the same position for hours. Five mercenaries accompanied the civilians during the evacuation."Sentinel, this is command! We have evacuated the civilians safely. We are to pull back and reroute." The commander said.
"Roger!" the scout replied.
"Rendezvous us at these coordinates. We will begin pulling back!" the commander said and ended his message.
"You hear that?" The scout said to Marrick.
"Yes!" Marrick replied.
Marrick trained his sights on one SynthMech unit. He focused further and saw a pilot disembarking from the unit."Don't think about it!"
The scout said to Marrick, who saw him with his finger on the trigger.
"If we can eliminate one pilot, then we could reduce their fighting capability. At least we would have problems with only one SynthMech pursuing us," Marrick said.
"Easy with the trigger. We cannot allow ourselves to be compromised. What if you miss? They will know where we are," the scout reprimanded Marrick while controlling his voice.
"I won't miss…" Marrick said.
"Don't risk it, damn it!" The scout protested.
Suddenly, a greenish light flashed through Marrick's scope. The scout noticed it was no ordinary light. The light was too focused and powerful to reach their position. After the loud bang from Marrick's sniper rifle. One of the SynthMech pilots was hit, causing him to tumble to the ground. Marrick's attack caused commotion and confusion on the enemy's ranks who were firing from different directions, hoping to spot or kill him.
"You fool!" The scout shouted at Marrick. "Even if we kill one pilot, there may be others who would take his place!"
Marrick did not respond and removed his eye from his scope. "At least it would delay them. We don't have a chance against their numbers…"
The scout felt frustrated upon hearing what Marrick had just said. "Let's go down, now!" He ordered Marrick.
As they packed their things, the scout's eyes opened wide in fear seeing two missiles approaching their position. He shouted at Marrick and said, "Get out of here, dumbass!"Marrick and the scout raced towards the entrance to the lower floors. The scout, seeing how desperate the situation was, pushed Marrick inside and locked the door on the other side.
The explosion engulfed the entire floor, killing the scout from the outside. Marrick, however, survived and left for the lower floors before the building would collapse.
