Chapter 29 - Neko

Neko, a charming mix of Siberian Husky and Border Collie, was seven years old when we had the pleasure of adopting him. Unfortunately, the animal shelter neglected to inform us of his underlying health issues. Upon his arrival at our home, Neko exuded happiness and warmth, but shortly thereafter, he unexpectedly lost his appetite, only eating bread and crackers. Vatani, intuitively sensed that something was amiss and remained loyally by Neko's side, ever watchful. Neko's affectionate and gentle nature endeared him to us immediately. After a week of concern, we decided to seek the expertise of a veterinarian. The doctor confirmed our fears: Neko was indeed ill, but the specific cause of his condition eluded diagnosis. The vet somberly informed us that he was refusing to eat, and the most humane course of action, given his suffering, was euthanasia. We were granted a compassionate moment to say our final goodbyes to Neko, a moment filled with sadness and the weight of an impending loss. I was deeply distressed by this sudden turn of events, as I had already formed a strong emotional bond with Neko in the brief time we shared. Seeking accountability, my mother and brother returned to the animal shelter, where my mother expressed her displeasure with the staff regarding the lack of disclosure about Neko's health, and subsequently received a refund. Neko's passing remains one of the most challenging experiences of my life. His absence was profoundly felt, and I continue to miss him dearly.
