EMILY'S POV
I woke up early the next morning. I watched as Jack slept peacefully. He suddenly started coughing and I rushed to the nightstand, where his drug laid. Rummaging through his drug bag, I saw a piece of paper. I looked through it and saw that it was his test results.
I read through it and was shocked to my bone marrow. It felt like a dream at first until I turned and saw him looking at me. I saw his pitiful eyes. "W-w-what.....is this?" I stuttered out as tears clouded my eyes, making it hard for me to see him well.
"I'm sorry dear I-------------"
"Stop it!!!!!!!!" I cut him off. "You hid this from me and you expect me to be calm about it? You're fuckin going to leave me and----------" I trailed off as I broke into tears.
"I didn't want to hurt you. I knew how hurt you were going to be if you find out. I'm going to be ok." He tried persuading me.
"Don't persuade me Jack. I'm not a child. You were given three months to live and you're telling me not to worry?" I wept as I ran out of the room in anger.
I knew Mrs Blackwood and Mr Blackwood weren't informed so I invited them over that morning. I had to tell them so we could find a solution.
I didn't speak to Jack anymore. He tried engaging in conversations but I snubbed him. I snubbed him because I was angry that he chose never to tell me about what was going on. Mr and Mrs Blackwood arrived after sometime. After breakfast I decided to break the news to them, but I thought about how they will take it.
They were old and might have a heart attack or get sick or something. I decided not to tell them at that time. It wasn't the right time. "So Emily, what did you want to tell us because we also brought some good news too." Mr Blackwood said.
I turned my gaze from Mr Blackwood to Jack. His eyes were begging me. I cleared my throat and then I started. "Uhmm.......I just wanted to tell you guys that.....I will be traveling to visit my parents and......I won't be around for the family's Christmas Eve celebration I will be going with Ashley alone." I didn't know when those words escaped my lips.
"Alright, we also got some good news for you guys too." Mrs Blackwood said as she did an eye language for her husband smiling.
He stood to his feet grinning and handed us a wedding invitation. "Whose is this Dad?" Jack asked him as he took it from him and opened it. I saw how his eyes went wide open.
"Brian is getting married." Mr Blackwood said.
"Oh my goodness. I'm so happy for him." I said excitedly.
"Wow." Jack said looking expressionless. I alone could notice it. I knew he was sad that he might not be there to enjoy his younger brother's wedding. I could see the tears building up in his eyes and my heart hurt for him. They left after meeting with Ashley and Max.
Jack and I were left alone in the living room. There was this strange silence that was biting me up. Jack buried his head in his palm. "When do you plan on telling them?" I asked him breaking the suffocating silence.
"Soon, but I need time." He said. I slowly walked to him as if I was counting my pace. I placed my arm on his back.
"It's ok dear, I understand. We will get through this. I will make sure of that. I won't let anything happen to you. I promise." I promised him. He grabbed my hands in his large ones and rested his head on it as he wept quietly.
I felt hurt seeing him cry. I couldn't let him leave me just like that. "There's nothing that can be done Emily." He said.
"That's what the doctor said but I know that nothing is going to happen to you." I told him.
He went to work later in the day even after I told him to take some rest that day, but he refused.
I was about to take a nap when I heard a knock on the front door. I opened it, seeing the face of Brian and his allegedly fiancèe. She was tall and captivating. Her sharp jawline was what brought out her facial beauty more, but I felt a negative energy around her but I didn't know why.
"Hey Brian." I said as I pulled him an embrace just like an older sister would do to her younger brother.
"Meet Veronica, my fiancee." He introduced her.
"Hi Veronica." I said giving a smile even when I knew it wasn't from my heart. She smiled back, waving at me.
"And this is Emily, my older brother's wife." He added.
"Nice meeting you Emily." She said.
"Nice meeting you too Veronica." I said before looking back at Brian. "Come on in." I told them opening the door wider.
They went straight to the living room and sat. "Jack isn't home?" Brian questioned after he didn't see Jack around.
"Oh yes. He went to work, but he will be back soon." I told them as I brought a glass of wine and two tumblers.
I watched Veronica slowly as she drank from her glass. "So Veronica, what do you do?" I asked her, trying to know more about her.
"Uhm.... I'm a novelist." She said smiling brightly.
Just as the next question was about to come out from my mouth, Jack made his way inside. "Hey Jackie." Brian called him playfully and I watched as Jack's moody face grew into a bright one.
"Our new couple." Jack said excitedly as they hugged each other. Jack introduced himself to Veronica which she also did.
Suddenly, Veronica's phone started ringing loudly. "Sorry, I need to answer this. It's about work. You guys can carry on." She said but I knew she was lying. She had this strange look on her face.
She walked down to the hallway briskly. I decided to drop the glasses in the kitchen and also use that opportunity to eavesdrop on her call which I knew was not authentic. As I walked towards the hallway, I saw her acting out. She seemed upset.
"Of course. We just got there." She said. I hid behind the wall while listening to her. "Don't worry. I'm going to be very careful. I won't be caught. In fact, I think they like me." She said almost smiling.
I was confused and wanted to find out more and who she was talking to. I knew right from the moment I saw her that she had an ulterior motive. "Look, I need you to find something on Emily. She seems to not like me yet. I think she's suspecting me or something." She said. I pulled closer to hear.
"Of course, she's very smart and I have to be extremely careful around her." She said.
"Look Matt, I need to leave now before they start searching for me." She said. I was shocked. I knew she had a motive for coming to this family but not with Matthew and Vivian.
I hid as she walked back to Jack and Brian. At that moment, I promised myself to expose her no matter what and no matter the cost.
