Chapter Six:
When I saw the name of the policeman on his vest, I registered it as someone I could go for help when I find myself all alone again.
"I'm sorry for your loss. I only heard about it few minutes ago or I'd have come over to drop my condolences." He said, taking his cap off. "I'm really sorry. Take care."
I bowed in thanks and he smiled before gesturing for me to go on ahead. He walked to the other cars behind mine and I drove forward when the line moved.
I brushed off the tear that slid off my ears but I felt better than the last time I got a condolence on my father's death. Back then, I felt like he died for nothing but after a while I realized he performed his duties and died in those duties. It was an admirable service.
When I left the road, I cornered to a street that I got from the internet. The current residence of the CEO of Xexi group.
"22 Don street... Eh?" I met a large gate just few seconds in. It was a dead end? There was a guard there and he raised his hand when I tried driving back. I kept the car engine running in case I needed to run from here.
"Who did you come for?" he had an accent and his eyes stayed on me as if they could see through me. That question felt like an interrogation too.
"The CEO of Xexi group. I am a family member." I said with a surprising amount of confidence. I added. "You can tell them that Seraphina Jones, daughter of Stephanie Jones, is here to speak with Evelyn Zen."
The guard's face squeezed and I looked away, wondering if I said something wrong. I tried to get my ID card to confirm that I was who I said I was but again, I was slapped with the reality that I didn't have an ID card yet.
"Madam Evelyn is dead." The guard told me.
I returned my eyes to him and he still had those cautious eyes. Did he mean what he just said? "Dead? The younger sister of Stephanie Jones is dead?"
"Aren't you a family member? You should've known." He said with a mocking tone. He definitely didn't believe me. He started returning to his post which meant end of discussion. I had no idea what to do than turn back, but I packed my car by the side and got down.
"My aunt is dead? When? Could that be why she never called me to take over the company? Surely, she had someone who survived her. Why didn't they try to reach out to me?" I kept muttering as I returned to the guard.
He was taller than I thought and with his cautious look on me again, I felt like backing away. "Please," I lowered my head out of habit. "I wasn't informed of her demise but if its a general knowledge, do you mind informing me of the details? When did she die? I'm truly her niece."
His eyes shifted to the phone in my hand. "Google it."
He really had an attitude. I didn't leave his side as I tapped on my smartphone for the cause of death of Evelyn Zen.
The articles that popped up spoke of an illness and only one at the end spoke of complications in surgery that was related to the illness. I almost turned off the site till I saw the date of her death.
"T-Two months ago!" What were the odds of that? My mother died three months ago, our pack got into war a month later and my father died today! Were all these coincidences?
The guard looked at me and I met his gaze with tears brimming in my eyes. "M-My mother, Stephanie Jones, she had died a month before her younger sister."
He sighed tiredly. "I know. Its obviously a set-up, you know. So I'm sorry, I can't give you information about the young master and his siblings. We need to protect them."
My hand went to my mouth and I nodded. This wasn't fair. Someone was after my family and that person might be who caused my death in my past life.
If this was so then my rebirth must be the only trump catch my family had. But why did it happen after two people were already dead? How do I even know my father's death wasn't also a setup?
I looked back at the guard and he was answering a phone call. He wouldn't give me any more information that'd jeopardize the children of his madam. I felt quite envious of them to have those around them that wanted to protect them.
I returned to my car and slammed the door hard. I fell on the steering wheel and sobbed for a while. I should be over my parents' death since my past life, but if they had actually been killed and in dishonourable ways, then I couldn't beat it. I will not just allow it!
The car started and I drove to the Xexi implant itself. The one in charge of the company will less likely be the young master that the guard spoke about. It'd be a close acquaintance, who could actually be the culprit.
Perhaps, I had read a lot of these face slapping heiress books but their close allies were usually the ones betraying them, whether it was family or friends.
If I meet this current head and they're clean, then they'd have to help me find the conspirators. They'd be around this company for sure.
There was a photoshoot happening in front of the company and I quickly found a parking spot that wasn't besides it. I stepped down and peeked between the photographers and fans.
A young girl with straight red hair and endearing blue eyes posed confidently in front of the camera. She was stunning and I nearly forgot what I came for.
I didn't have body dysmorphic disorder but I was quite insecure in the way I looked. The girl smiled after taken a shot and being complimented by the photographer.
She had a an effortlessly beautiful smile while I had to practice smiles in the mirror all the time.
I snapped from that thought and walked into the office. I noticed the security in front didn't speak to me as their attention was on the young model.
"Well, I'm not a criminal of any sort so it should be fine."
