I woke to a loud ringing and momentarily my vision seemed to blend with the sound as everything was blurry and loud. I sat up stiff and in pain with one arm asleep from the position I was in I slapped my numb hand down at the phone on the side table trying to turn off the noise when the noise stopped and I suddenly heard a different sound that almost stopped my heart.
"Hello? Miss Harper? Hellooo." I jumped realizing it could be one of the companies and I grabbed the phone only for it to fall right out of my numb hand crashing on the floor. "SHIT… shit" I just said shit and whoever it is heard me, I could hear her still calling my name as I reached down with the opposite hand and finally was able to answer.
"Yes hi, hello, this is Lilly Harper" I nervously said as I slammed my eyes shut in total shame just hoping she wouldn't ask why it took so long to answer.
"Yes hi Miss Harper, looks like we had a bad connection there for a sec, glad it cleared up. This is Frances Joy from GTI calling to schedule an interview with you and HR. Will you be available Monday morning at 8:00 Sharp?" I let out a silent sigh of relief that she believed it was a bad connection or that she was just too polite to call me on it seeing as how she had to of heard me cuss through the phone. I collected myself and swiftly responded: Of course, 8:00 sharp, I'll be there. Thank you for calling Miss Joy.
"Oh just call me Frances and no problem, see you Monday" Before I could respond she hung up. I jumped off the couch and started jumping up and down excitedly yelling about my news and waking Sam up in the process. She got up and jumped with me when all of the sudden we heard the door bell. I ran over and swung the door open, so high on life that I forgot to look in the peep hole first. Thankfully it was just Mike. Mike stood like a puppy with his eyes looking up and big as if he had just peed in the corner and was trying to look adorable as to not get scolded. He held a coffee in one have and two coffees in a cup hold in the other hand as a payment for entry into the house. I looked at him with a smile and a small laugh came through my nose as I nodded to come inside.
By the time he stepped in Sam had already left the room and as I was about to call out to her I could hear the shower upstairs turn on. I looked at Mike and our eyes widened for a moment before we started laughing. Only Sam would get self conscious after finding out a guy liked her, even though that guy had seen her through good and bad and even worse days and still was head over heals in love with her. I just chuckled and said: Well that's a good sign then huh?
"I hope so" His eyes beamed and his smile could light a small village it was so bright and happy.
"Your making me jealous Mike, I don't know if anyone has ever looked that way because of me before. I guess now that I'll only need to focus on work I should start dating again" I said smiling at him.
"Again? I didn't know you ever had." Mike said, his eyebrows knitted together in confusion and without any bad intentions but it embarrassed me all the same. I grabbed my coffee and went into the kitchen to avoid him seeing my red face.
I made breakfast for us and set the table just as Sam came in fresh makeup and an outfit she helped herself to from my closet. Smiling as if she never met Mike before and I could tell she was nervous as they both just stared at each other for an uncomfortable amount of time, at least for me. I grabbed my plate of food and said: Oh I totally forgot there was a questionnaire that GTI asked me to fill out and its going to take a while so I'm going to go do that in my room for the quiet and ill just come down when I'm done. I grabbed a few more pieces of bacon and ran up the stared before they could snap out of their trance and argue with me.
I climbed out my window onto the roof and sat eating my food and taking in the view, I could see some of the city and loved looking at the buildings, I imagined what I would have done differently in their design and my mind wandered to what new buildings I would design here in the very same city and if one day someone would look at them the same as I do.
When I cam back down stairs Mike and Sam were sitting on the couch holding hands and whispering, I couldn't help but chuckle which caught them by surprise and they separated quickly. I tilted my head and narrowed my eyes at them in confusion before asking: Whats up guys?
"Well Mike said you felt a little jealous and I just don't want to hurt you or make you feel uncomfortable" Sam responded with apologetic eyes.
"Mike! I was halfway joking, just saying I'm going to start dating and no it doesn't make me uncomfortable, just as long as you don't do that staring thing again its..." As they literally started staring at each other again. My eyes narrowed in at them but I couldn't help but start laughing at them. They were just as cute as I thought they would be. We spent the day together and they even had dinner at my house before Mike took Sam home.
I spent the rest of my weekend in peace researching the history of GTI, their competitors which included Sinclair Corp which led me to a picture online. Leo Sinclair CEO and Dom Sinclair COO of the Sinclair Corporation. I looked back and forth between the brothers trying to decide which one was more attractive the picture quality wasn't great but they both looked a lot a like and both gorgeous. I put to memory as much as I could and found myself reciting the information as I got ready for Sunday dinner with my parents and brother on the drive to their house in New Rochelle about 40 minutes away from where I lived.
My parents Jack and Elaine Harper lived in a 2 bedroom house which was modern but humble, they were always modest people, kind and appreciative for what they had. Even though truth be told I knew they were wealthy, you would never know it by speaking to them. My mother had her Bachelors Degree in Psychology and went on to become a published writer and my father was an Archaeologist which Influenced my love of Architecture. The better part of mine and my brothers childhood was spent traveling the world with our parents, seeing things most people only dreamed about. It wasn't until we were back in the states for good, I was 15 and my brother 10 that we finally went to public school. Even thought they had the money, our parents didn't believe in private school, they said they went to public school and it shaped who they were.
