Chapter 5: Goblins (1)
As we were exploring the dungeon, my enhanced sense heard something whistling through the air. The sound was quite sharp, as if it was cutting through the wind.
I knew what it was. There could only be one thing that produces that kind sound.
A projectile. Is it a dart or an arrow? Let's find out.
I raised my shield tower towards the direction of the noise.
And then clang! The sound of something metal struck my giant shield. I looked at the ground, towards the object that was blocked by my shield and saw a dart.
A crude makeshift dart, fiddled with feathers and a metal tip coated with purple liquid.
A poison dart.
"We have some boogie! Everyone, be alert!" The Team Leader shouted at us and the rest tightened their grip on their respective weapons.
I became alert too. Sharpening my focus to respond accordingly to the incoming attacks of those cursed goblins.
Soon a barrage of projectiles hailed down on us.
I raised my shield and blocked the poison darts. The archer on our team was quick to respond.
"Quick Arrow!" He whispered and his drawn arrow glewed in a greenish hue.
"Multiple Shot!"
TWANG! TWANG! TWANG!
With a quick release of his bow, three arrows were shot through the distance.
Eventually a sound of pained scream resounded. The goblins were really low in terms of intelligence.
After shooting their poison darts they didn't change their position which was the biggest mistake a Range Dealer or any kind of class that shoots projectiles could make.
By shooting them and not changing you are basically announcing your position to the enemy.
"Hunter Byeol! With me!" The Team Leader said to Byeol and the two of them leaped out of the formation and dash towards the shot goblins.
When they reached their position, they saw a clump of low-level goblins, wearing nothing but a loincloth and holding a crude sword; they were most likely Goblin Soldiers.
The two swordsmen did their role and massacred them. Killing all of them in a flash.
"Area clear! Move on to the next area!" After killing the goblins here, the porter who was beside the Mining Team did their job and extracted the Essence Stone from the dead goblins.
We ignored the Porter and let them do their job while we moved on to the next area.
We moved on to another area, delving deeper into the forest.
Just then, we heard it: a growl echoed through the narrow trees of the forest.
Goblins. The same low-level kind we'd faced before ro so I thought.
"Form up!" the Team Leader barked. We tightened our formation, shields raised and weapons at the ready.
From the green bush, a group of goblins charged at us, but these were different.
They were clad in scrap metal armor, their eyes glowing with savageness.
These were Goblin Brutes, and they were accompanied by Goblin Shamans, their staff glowing with eerie light.
"Shamans first!" the Team Leader commanded. The archer nodded, his bow already drawn.
"Quick Arrow!" he whispered again, his arrow glowing with a brighter hue this time.
"Piercing Shot!"
TWANG!
The arrow flew straight and true, striking one of the Goblin Shamans in the chest. The shaman screeched in pain before collapsing, its staff clattering to the ground.
But the Goblin Brutes were upon us. I braced myself as the first brute swung its massive club at me. I
raised my shield just in time, the force of the blow sending vibrations up my arm. I retaliated with a swift thrust of my great sword, piercing the brute's exposed throat.
It gurgled and fell.
To my left, the Team Leader was locked in combat with two brutes at once. His dual swords flashed in the dim light, parrying and striking with deadly precision. One brute fell, then the other, but not before landing a heavy blow on the Team Leader's shoulder.
"Byeol, cover him!" I shouted.
Suddenly, a bright light filled the forest. The remaining shaman was chanting, its staff raised high.
I knew what was coming—a powerful spell that would be quite troublesome if released properly.
"Not today," I muttered, sprinting towards the shaman. I dodged past a brute, deflecting its strike with my shield, and closed the distance to the shaman. With a swing, I brought my sword down on its head, cutting off the chant—and its life—mid-sentence.
With the shamans down, the brutes were more manageable. The rest of the team fell upon them, swords flashing, arrows flying.
Our mage wasn't being idle either. As she was whittling them down with her fire spells. One by one, the goblins fell, until none were left standing.
"Area clear!" the Team Leader called out, his voice strained.
The porter and the Mining Team moved in, extracting Essence Stones from the fallen goblins while we caught our breath and tended to our wounds.
"We need to be more careful," the Team Leader said, grimacing as Byeol finished healing his shoulder. "These weren't ordinary goblins."
I nodded at him. On the data given to us, it's said that this dungeon is predominantly filled with Goblin Soldiers but we only encountered them once.
And instead we faced a much more powerful goblin archetype.
But this is still manageable. I still haven't been pushed to a corner where I had to use my Immortality and Steel Manipulation so this is still manageable.
However, I have a feeling that this case won't last long.
"Let's move on to the next area. We still have around five areas left to clear."
