Chapter 4: Dungeon (3)
Woo Jinchul lifted Hunter Byeol with ease. The smug swordsman who was not so smug anymore gasping for air while being held right in the neck.
There was genuine fear in his eyes. Gone was his arrogant gaze replaced by the eyes of prey.
"P-please…!" He begged. This is the difference between an A-Rank hunter and a C-Rank Hunter.
The strong prey on the weak. If earlier he was doing the same to the Manager, now the roles were reversed with him being on the receiving end of the Chief Inspector.
After seeing Hunter Byeol's bloodshot eyes and purple face, he knew it was enough warning and let go of him.
He fell to the ground with a thud, immediately heaving for air and coughing violently.
COUGH! COUGH! COUGH!
"Please get back to your seat." Woo Jinchul said with a glare and Hunter Byeol meekly followed.
The rest of the Hunter who held their head high earlier were now looking at the ground like a bunch of children caught in the act of stealing.
"Are you okay, Manager Seol?" Jinchul asked the man as he patted him on the shoulder.
"I'm fine, thank you Chief Inspector." The latter bowed.
"You go and rest. I'll do the briefing instead." He said.
"No! You don't have to do that, Chief Inspector!" Manager Seol waved his hands in refusal but Jinchul was firm in his decision.
"I wasn't asking." A threat. And so he conceded.
"alright… thank you Chief Inspector…" and so after bowing down he stepped out of the room leaving Chief Inspector Woo Jinchul with the rest of the Hunters.
Seeing the awkward atmosphere, Lee Baek walked to one of the monochair and sat down.
"Forgive me for that unprofessional display. Please, don't do that again Hunter Byeol otherwise I will have to give you severe sanction." Woo Jinchul warned with Hunter Byeol vigorously nodding.
"With that out of the way, I'm gonna start the briefing for today's raid." He said as if nothing significant happened and the rest of us listened like nothing happened.
"Today's gate is a C-Rank gate named Goblin Den. With the boss being a Goblin Captain which is around the threshold for a C+ Rank monster." He briefed and pulled out a tablet.
In that tablet a bunch of graphs and data was inputted. He passed it around us for us to get a grasp of what we're facing.
"The goal for this raid is to kill as many goblins as possible in the dungeon and kill the Goblin Captain and get their essence stone. However, killing the Goblin Captain will be a last priority, one of your goals in this raid aside from clearing it is to buy enough time for the Mining Team to mine Mana Stones/Crystal."
Mana Crystals are a blue-colored, magical mineral found inside dungeons. Although they aren't worth as much as essence stone, due to not containing as much mana, they can still sell at high prices and serve as a secondary source of income for hunters around the world.
As electricity doesn't work inside dungeons, hunters are required to mine mana crystals with manual methods, such as pickaxes.
As a result, guilds typically have entire teams of hunters dedicated to just mining crystals.
Since crystals are typically found in large deposits and the hunters on the teams are usually low-ranking, it typically takes several hours before a dungeon is picked clean of crystals.
That's why killing the Goblin Captain will be put last so that the dungeon won't get cleared earlier. In short they need to buy time for the profit to roll in.
"Please familiarize yourself with the given data. I'll leave you all to your own devices. We'll start in thirty minutes." After giving that last regard he stepped out of the room.
And so with that, we all kept to ourselves and familiarized ourselves with the details. From time to time we will converse with each other regarding our assigned roles and what to do.
And just like that half an hour passed and we were escorted out of the room and into the gate.
"Is everyone ready?" It was Manager Seol who was back again to manage us. Woo Jinchul seems to have a bigger responsibility.
This time Hunter Byeol was no longer roaring to get aggressive at Manager Seol and instead listened attentively.
"We're all set." The aloft swordsman said. Assuming the position of temporary leader.
"Very well then, please enter the gate."
******
As we entered the gate, we were released into a whole new dimension. A world of bright green forest, a lush atmosphere that is rare in the polluted world we live in.
It was fascinating.
Dungeons are pockets of the chaos world that are connected to the human world through Gates.
They generally contain a horde of monsters, which are led by a boss, and remain open until the boss is killed. Once the boss is killed, the dungeon will stay open for about an hour before closing on its own.
It should be noted that in order to prevent the loss of human life as much as possible, a dungeon must be cleared within seven days.
If it is not, then it will undergo what's called a "dungeon break", meaning that the monsters inside the dungeon will be able to cross over to the human world and attack the civilian population.
"Everyone! Remain in formation!" The aloft Swordsman, which assumed the Team Leader role shouted at us.
And so we positioned ourselves according to our roles. On the very back was our Mage. Of course as the Tank I was at the very forefront, the two swordsmen were behind me and in the middle of that two swordsmen was the archer.
With that formation, we were ready to start our raid.
