Chereads / Chronicles of the Six Blades / Chapter 2 - The Atheneum

Chapter 2 - The Atheneum

After the mutual exchange of goodbyes and departing from the Supermassive monument of a theatre, Subconscious strolled again, as he went to find a new blade to convince. He was motivated to bring about a change as soon as possible, but could not rush the process, as that would lead to the death of all the work that everyone has done in terms of their self-healing.

As for the next person to meet, Subconscious already had the next person in mind, for it was only until the space he encountered, that him to try his level best at convincing that blade. Passing through some of the broken barriers, and giant locks on the ground. That soon turned into spatial laboratories, and supermassive buildings all surrounding these locations. It had almost turned into this massive megapolis of a place, with skyscrapers so tall, you could not even view the top height from the ground. Throughout all these almost void buildings, there was one that was particularly standing out, and that was the massive library that was present at the corner of the city.

As a curious advisor, Subconscious entered into the library, for this was the storehouse of all possible information.

The library inside the body is truly a marvel, for there can be nothing lost in memory in this library. All the information that one attains stays here. At the same time, there may be knowledge present that is not meant to be usually present. That is all completely useless to normal people though.

At the corner, holding his cigar was the Jester of a shade.

"Second Blade. I see that you have taken up refuge in this library…", Subconscious stated.

Facades turned towards the voice. Instantly went to greet the Advisor out of courtesy. "It is a genuine pleasure to see you here, Advisor. What brings you here?"

"It feels weird taking greetings from someone who is canonically meant to be a liar. However, this is how our mind functions, and there is nothing that I can do about that.", Subconscious replied to that statement.

"I can see that you are still open about insulting my line of work. There is a reason though, why I am the second strongest blade after Six himself. While I don't agree with most of the actions that Six has taken, I don't think there is anyone who does not acknowledge the fact that I am the sole reason why this body has even pulled through."

"I don't think anyone is going to be denying that either. Everyone is just trying to cope with their losses right now."

"Loses or not, it does not change the fact that I am always looked upon as some villain."

"I mean, look at where you decided to reside."

"Do you realize how difficult it is at times to pull off characters… Fake it until you make it. That strategy seems to constantly haunt me. I have played so many characters, I have enacted so many scenes and I have played through with so many things, that at this stage, I do not know who I am myself. That matters very little to me though."

"Why do you think that is the case though, Facades?"

"Frankly, we are all shades. We serve a purpose in our mind. Practically, we are all the same entity. Just like giving a machine a set of instructions to work with, we are also pretty much the same. We have a task that we have to fulfil. If you do not fulfil that task, then you are practically useless to the rest of us."

"What might you suggest is exactly what you do?"

"What do I do? I feel like it would be a better answer to state what I don't do." I cannot do the simple tasks that the other shades of us can do. However, I have to know how to enact them. I have to know how to pull off characters and give such a compelling story, that it is better if I just become a storyteller myself. Each character that you play in this world is filled with the most complex emotions and backstories. The moment you start to lose yourself amongst those characters is when you realize the true trauma of self. You can feel the agitation that whatever you are doing, you are going to start losing yourself in that mess. Would there be any point in really living that kind of life then?"

"I fear that you might be doing that to yourself, Second Blade."

"I do not care though. Fine, I lose a little bit of myself each time I interact with other people. Is that not just part and parcel of how someone's life should be? Yes, we may be part of an immortal being, but we are still hurting from within, just like any other normal organism. There will always be things that sting us all the time. We just have to make sure that whatever we do, we build upon the work that we have done. We always build upon the story that we have worked on. Alternatively, you can twist the story in another direction if you feel that it is not going your way at all. The oyster is always ready… All we need to do is create the pearl in our favour."

"From my understanding, you are willing to torture and lose yourself, just so that you can play a part, to make sure that the truth is always concealed? What is the end goal then? What finally happens to your lies when people eventually find out about you? Do not break yourself to a point where you cannot even recognize the actions of your consequences."

"Indeed, actions do have their consequences. There is more to it than just that. There are more than just normal people wanting to understand how certain things work inside the mind. There is not a smart species that is present in this world that does not know the concept of playing the fool. The Jester is the most powerful due to his versatility. In turn, compared to most of the other shades, I am there on the top of the podium in terms of strength and influence on the mind. I am practically the embodiment of lies itself. I am Down. There is a section of this library that discusses this."

"Facades. I know this library in and out. I am the Advisor… I created this library."

"Then you know exactly which theory I am talking about."

"That has no say in this statement of yours. How do you plan on making up with everyone? You were one of the sole reasons why the table even broke apart. Your absence on the table is evident."

"Is there anyone who has returned to the table?"

"I mean…."

"You cannot lie to a liar. I'll just figure it out"

Subconscious decided to deviate the topic onto another track. "I-I don't know. It is like a game, you can expect everyone to complete their tasks and come forth, but there will always be more work that has to be done.

"Work is not the problem Advisor. I can work, I have been constantly working, just so that I can make everyone around me happier. Everything has a sacrifice though, and I am willing to undergo it."

"This self-destructive attitude of yours is going to land us all in trouble."

"There is a reason why we enter into this state as well, right? Every time I see this library, I try to regain my true self again. Constantly losing more and more of myself, does pain. But this library also stores my own new experiences. That can be used to craft even more complex characters, with even more interesting situations to be able to use them."

"Your flair to understand that and continue with it is what makes you so special. Never lose that ability of yours Facade"

"I know… for there will be tasks for me always."

"Can I trust you to be at the table? At least for me, one last time, now that Six has abandoned the group for the time being?"

Facades ruffled his hair and just roamed to see the even more vast expanse sections that he had left to explore.

"I think I will also take a break for a while."
