As I entered the captain's office I was suddenly unable to move at the site of what was in front of me.
The captain was at least six feet in height. He was also entirely bald with a scar across his left eye that told me he was not to be trifled with.
His dwarven beard was quite simple with it going all the way down to his upper chest area.
In the dwarven culture of our world white hair always symbolized wisdom and experience.
That teamed up with the way he looked told me that he knew what he was doing, and that I was not to defy him if I wanted to maintain my family's honor.
I then bowed at him out of respect and started to speak in a humble tone.
"Hello captain; my name is Giltrude of The House of Digore. I have been offered a chance to prove myself as a member of the city guard.
I thank you for this opportunity, and I will never bring shame to either my household or to the city guard".
"Good because that is what I expect from each one of the dwarves that join me in my daily mission to keep our city safe from possible invasion. It does not matter if our Invaders are one of the other species, monsters, or even demons from the Netherworld". Captain said to me that he looked at me with a stern expression, which told me that he meant business behind every word he had just stated.
I didn't notice that he went over to his desk, grabbed a piece of paper, and handed it to me.
"This will be your first assignment as a member of the city guard. If you fail you will not be allowed to continue this profession. On the other hand, if you succeed and do well it could lead to a variety of different career paths for you considering your age".
The paper that he gave me read that there was an active nest of Goblins that was spotted inside the forest to the east of town.
And this also gave me a bonus for each goblin slayed, and a massive bonus if I ended up slaying any shamans or dark mages that might exist in the nest.
It seemed that the dwarves in this world who were part of the city guard lived the life of a common adventurer but with a little bit more restriction on how they do things.
I chose to accept this Mission without complaining because it would be a good way to test out any possible skills that I had obtained.
"I will gladly accept this contract". I said to the captain as I found him once again.
"Good, but before you go take on this Mission, you must meet with our blacksmith to get yourself your beginning armor and weapon.
We have a variety of different types of armor as well as weapons in stock for new arrivals.
You can use the money that you earn to possibly get better and rarer items from the blacksmith".
"All right then, I will check with our blacksmith before I begin my mission."
I then left the captain alone and made my way to the room that was on the opposing side of the second floor.
The side of the building that contained the forge was a lot more humid than the rest of the building.
As I entered the forge I could sense the heat that was around me, and it made it very hard for me to move.
"Well it seems that the captain has brought in another member of the guard. My name is Turgore, and I will make you some of the best weapons and armor that can be made".
I then saw him continue to hammer away at a piece of iron that was molded into what looked like a curved sword.
"My name is Gertrude". I said back to him.
"What kind of weapon and armor are you needing from me?" He asked me if he had stopped hammering the metal and went over to a closet where he had stashed the variety of different weapons and armor that he had made for starting members of the city guard.
"My weapon type in combat is a greatsword, and armor preference is strong."
"Then I will start you out with an iron variant of both.
Remember that if you save up some of the money you make and pay me I will give you much better gear and armor. I also can enhance our weapons with ancient dwarven rune magic".
The thought of having my weapon as well as my own set of heavy armor it's an excitement through my veins because this was nothing like the video games that I beta tested when I was on Earth.
"Here you go. This is all of your starting gear. Go and put it on in my change room over there".
I grabbed the armor and weapon that he put on the table, and went into the room that he was pointing at.
The first piece that I put on was the chainmail that went under my armor. The next piece was the piece of armor for my legs followed by my shoe pieces.
After that, I put on the gloves and, finally, the chess piece and helmet.
As I grabbed the sheath of my new greatsword and pulled out the iron weapon I could see it sparkling as if it was shiny and new.
I will need to do whatever I can to ensure that this sword stays of high quality for as long as possible.
When I got finished examining The sword I reinserted it into its sheath and walked out of the changing room.
"All right everything looks to be in good order". Turgore said to me as he stopped smithing to examine all of my gear to make sure that it looked right on me.
"They waste all this good material on newbies like him. If I had that level of assistance when I started it would have been easy as hell for me to climb through the ranks". One of the men in the bar said as I walked downstairs.
"I hope you enjoy your first trial as a member of the city guard newbie". One of the dwarves called out in a tone that told me that he did not think I was going to survive.
Then after that, I walked out of the guard house and made my way to the location of the forest where the goblin nest was supposed to be located.
I was able to tell that I was in a goblin nest because of the cocoons that were created. Around the trees, there are multiple entrances for the goblins to use.
Before I approached the goblin nest I chose to look at my display screen to see if I had any new skills available to me.
As I gained access to my menu of skills I was only able to see five different categories. Each category was of a specific stat.
I noticed that was only at level one. Out of all of the stats, my strength was my highest at twenty.
My absolute lowest stat at the current moment was my luck at zero.
You have one unspent skill point. A voice said to me which matched the voice of the AI that chose to reincarnate me.
I decided to look at the skills that were available to me under the vitality table because I needed to value my survival before doing damage.
Among my list of options, I chose to go with the skill guardian. If I was to obtain this skill it would allow me to once a day nullify any attack that is thrown at me if it is not either Divine or demonic.
"I want the active skill Guardian". I said to the voice that continued to talk to me.
Do you want to spend your points on that skill?
"Yes".
Giltrude has gained access to the vitality skill Guardian.
As soon as the AI spoke those words I could feel the power of the skill coursing through me.
Even though I knew that it was just a simple survival skill I knew that it would be a good way to get started on my journey to climb my way to the top of the dwarven ladder.
I will do whatever it takes to bring more honor to my family and also to ensure that this second life I have been given was not a waste.
