Chapter 10 - Human Slums

"you heard what he wanted me to do. I will take over until this mission is complete. That is what I will do".

"Good; you will have to do in his place. This mission is more important than any one dwarf's life.

Do you understand that when we finish this we will be able to transport our important individuals anywhere in the dwarven and human empires? This will make things like information travel a lot faster as well as unite us like never before". Prince Benyail said in a very serious tone as if I should instantly understand the importance of what he had said.

As he spoke it threw me for a loop because it seemed as if he was acting quite different than when he was being snooty to the guard at the gate. This told me that he had a lot of passion behind his work on this specific project.

Due to this passion, I knew that there was more to him than just a stuck-up prince.

I then used some of the bandages that I had stored in a sec against the right side of my waist to wrap the dead body of the soldier. After that, I placed the body in the very back of the carriage.

When I was done with that we moved out within about ten minutes to move toward the targeted city.

As we approached the human capital city of White Falls I could see all of the guards staring at me. The thought of what they were thinking about me rushed through my mind, but I chose not to be worried about it since I was here on a very simple bodyguard mission.

"We are to meet with the owner of the local magical item shop. He is supposed to give us a set of elemental stones so that we can power the magical teleportation circles since we do not possess the ability to cast magic". The dwarven Prince said to me as he appeared through the window that separated the driver seat from the passenger area of the carriage.

I drove to the end of the main road; then turned left four streets down. When I made it to where I saw the next road I turned to the street labeled Ninth Avenue.

As soon as I entered this street I was suddenly engulfed with the stench of piles of trash as well as decaying human bodies.

I even saw people pissing and shitting on the side of the road like it was no big deal.

This avenue was a lot less lively and also a lot more filthy than the main road, which told me that the human leader did not focus on the maintenance of his city except for in the frequently visited areas.

This city did not appear as I thought it was going to. It truly was upsetting that the humans did not care about unity or even keeping their city's beauty fully intact.

Near the back of the road, there was a medium-sized shop against the left side of the road where I saw a young man with red hair and brown eyes standing holding something as if he was waiting for someone to show up and take this specific item from him.

As I stopped, the carriage approached the shop where that man was located. Prince Benyail stepped out and did a formal bow to him.

I then saw Benyail hand the man and letter.

"Oh; so you are the dwarves that I am supposed to make the trade with.

I truly hope that your people will succeed in their endeavors with these items as well as your knowledge of ancient rune magic". The human said as he handed the box to the prince.

I saw him put it in the carriage, and he asked me to drive him back home to the dwarven royal capital.

We were both able to make it back to the capital without any form of resistance or ambush.

It felt very relaxing as I drove the carriage under the archway of the gate to my hometown.

After this, I did not even have to steer the carriage because the drakes knew exactly where they should go to make it home.

"As the third prince of our race, I thank you very much for your service today, and who knows, I might even ask for your services personally if I need anything else". Prince Benyail said to me as soon as we made it to the royal palace.

The palace had four floors that were entirely made out of either stone or iron. It was very clear to me as I looked around that the dwarf King valued his family's protection above all other responsibilities.

When I was alone I made my way back to the garrison for the town guard and turned in my report to my captain.

"First off, I am quite sad about the loss of one of our soldiers. May his ancestors be proud of what he has achieved with his limited life.

For completing the mission that will give you thirty silver due to the significance of what you were trying to achieve with this mission".

"Is there anything else that you need me to do?" I asked him.

"Since you have achieved two good missions back to back I want you to take tomorrow off and enjoy it. When this day is over for you I want you to come back to work with a full amount of energy and enthusiasm".

I accepted his orders wholeheartedly and made my way back home with a large amount of joy behind every one of my steps.

My mother was cleaning the cobwebs out of our chimney when I entered the house.

"I am glad to see that you have returned home from your work today. Was any part of it interesting?" They asked me as she stepped down from the chimney, and walked to the kitchen.

"I had to deal with my very first death today, and if that did not make the mission hard enough for me to complete today I had to deal with an irritating member of the dwarven royal family". I said to my mother as I took off my boots and walked into the dining area, where I could see my little sisters placing plates and mugs.

"Even if you think that he deserved that; you need to remember that your decisions will reflect upon our household. That point is extra intense for you since you are the eldest son of our family".

I saw her bring in a plate full of meat and potatoes briefly after she finished speaking to me.

"Considering how the mission ended, I doubt that it did anything bad to our family reputation. If I am to be honest, I believe that it actually might have improved it a little bit".

And then ate some of the food that was on the table quickly so that I could make it up to my room and go to sleep. I would adjust the status points that I hit her in today after I got my much-needed sleep.
