Chapter 1 - Prologue: Arrival

The town of Redfall, a small town only populated by a couple thousand people located in the Mid-Atlantic part of the US, wasn't that well known. There was little to do in the town besides some common entertainment places, such as the movies, a couple of small malls, and restaurants. The town was discovered in 1709 by a few people who disliked the rule of the British in the thirteen colonies. So in an attempt to gain their independence, they moved their families there and established a small settlement, which eventually expanded into the town today.

On this day, a bus had arrived in town and was parked in front of the bus stop.

Bus Driver: Alright! Everyone off!

The six people on board all stepped off the bus and started to head their separate ways, except for a boy. The boy was eighteen years old and had short black hair and blue eyes. He was wearing a black hoodie with a blue t-shirt underneath, as well as jeans and a pair of basketball sneakers. Around his neck was a silver necklace, with the pendant hidden beneath his shirt.

Alex: Now...where is it?

Alex opened his phone and put the address into his GPS.

Alex: Okay, two blocks away. That's not bad.

Alex started to walk, following his GPS. He eventually arrived at a small apartment building. It wasn't the most fancy place in the world, but it wasn't poorly managed. It was a place for nice, quiet living—exactly what Alex wanted. He walked inside and saw an old Asian woman at the front desk reading a book.

Alex: Uh, hello, miss?

Woman: Oh, hello. How may I help you?

The woman put her book down and looked at Alex, giving him her full attention.

Alex: Hi, my name is Alex Morgan. I called a couple weeks ago and rented out room 201.

Woman: Oh, I remember. Let me get the keys.

The woman walked behind the counter and grabbed the set of keys.

Woman: Your room is ready for you; the rules are: no pets, no room construction, of course. Remember that AC and water are paid for by the owners; all you have to pay is rent and electricity, which will come out to about $800 a month. My name is Ms. Chen, and if you have problems, call me; the number is on your kitchen table.

Alex: Alright, thank you, Ms. Chen.

Ms. Chen: No problem; I hope you enjoy your room.

Alex grabbed his bags, walked inside the elevator, and pressed the floor 2 button. After a couple seconds, he arrived and walked to his room. Once he got the door open, he took a quick look around. The living room was decently sized, and the kitchen was pretty nice as well, having an oven, stove, fridge, and dishwasher already installed. The room also had a bedroom and a bathroom with all he needed. It was a pretty nice-sized apartment, but the problem is that it's completely empty. Alex knew the moving company would be coming with his furniture the next day, so he didn't have a couch, TV, or even a bed yet.

Alex: Good thing I brought a sleeping bag.

Alex laid out his sleeping bag on the hardwood floor in the living room.

Alex: Alright, now it's time to get some dinner, and then I guess I'll head to bed.

Alex walked out of his apartment and back to the main lobby.

Alex: Hey, Ms. Chen.

Ms. Chen: Oh, hello, Alex. Was everything suitable?

Alex: Yeah, it was great. I'm just wondering: where would be a good place to get some food?

Ms. Chen: Oh, well, nearby there's a diner that's run by Mr. Roberts. He was a great cook and made great burgers. Then there's a wing shop nearby, as well as a Chinese restaurant not too far away either.

Alex: Where would you recommend?

Ms. Chen: For your first day, I'd say the diner. Since you're new in town, it's a good place to meet people. It's about two minutes east, past the high school.

Alex: I'll try it out, thanks.

Ms. Chen: No problem; have a good time.

Alex left the apartment building and started walking. He arrived at the diner and walked inside. It was a nice, quaint place. It wasn't anything fancy, but something about it just felt relaxing to be in.

Waitress: Hello, table for 1?

Alex: Yeah.

Waitress: Alright, follow me.

The waitress walked Alex to a booth in the back and sat him down.

Waitress: I don't think I've seen you here before. First time?

Alex: I actually just moved here today.

Waitress: Really? We don't get many people that move here; it's mostly people moving out.

Alex: Any reason?

Waitress: Just people not wanting to be stuck in a small town like ours. They all head to New York or somewhere else. Try to make a name for themselves.

Alex: I see.

Waitress: Well, what's your name?

Alex: Alex. Yours?

Waitress: I'm Aurora. It was nice to meet you. Now, can I start you off with a drink?

Alex: A coke, please.

Aurora: Alright, I'll be back in a second.

Alex nodded before looking over at the menu. He had to admit that the waitress girl was very pretty. She looked to be around his age, with long purple hair and matching eyes.

Alex: I may have to stop by more often.

Soon, Aurora returned with Alex's drink.

Aurora: Here you go, so does anything look good on the menu?

Alex: Hm, what do you recommend?

Aurora: I really like the chicken patty and fries personally. The cook puts seasoning in the chicken and dabs a little garlic parmesan sauce, and on the fries, he puts cajun seasoning on. It's so good.

Alex: I'll have that then.

Aurora: Alrighty. I'll be back soon!

After a few minutes, Aurora returned with Alex's food, and he ate it. It was really tasty for him.

Aurora: So was the food good?

Alex: Delicious. My compliments to the chef.

Aurora: I'm sure he'll appreciate it. Here's your check.

Alex: Alright, hey, before you go. Here.

Alex handed her a twenty-dollar bill.

Alex: For the tip.

Aurora: W-Wow. Thank you!

Alex: No problem; good work should be well-rewarded after all.

Alex paid his bill in cash and walked out of the diner.

Alex: This may become my new spot. The food was good, and it helps that there's a pretty waitress.

Alex started to walk back down the street; the sun had gone down, and the moon was now shining in the sky. He walked towards his apartment until he heard a noise coming from an alleyway.

???: H-Help...

Alex turned down the alleyway and headed toward where the voices were coming from. As he walked, he saw a small puddle of blood.

Alex: Shit...

He continued down the path, following a small blood trail, until he arrived at the body of a girl. She was maybe a year or so younger than Alex. He bent over and felt for a pulse; her body was cold and pale, and there was no pulse. Soon he heard sniffling coming out from behind a dumpster. He looked over and saw another girl crying.

Alex: Hey, what happened here?

Girl: H-He...He...

Alex: It's okay; calm down.

Girl: He killed her...he k-killed Dana!

???: You're damn right, I did!

Another voice came in from the alleyway; the man's face was hidden by the shadows, but one thing was clear as day: his bright red eyes were shining in the darkness.

Alex: Great—a vampire.

Vampire: And who are you? A white knight here to save the day? Sorry to tell you, but these fine young women are mine.

Alex: And you're telling me you didn't hear the creepiness in that sentence?

Vampire: ... Okay, you have a point, but I still mean what I said: these two are my meals tonight, so back off.

Alex: That's not going to happen.

Vampire: You damn humans and your bullshit bravado. I'll kill you.

Alex: Oh, I see. So you're that weak.

Vampire: Weak? Did a fucking human just call me weak?

Alex: Extremely so. Do you know why I said you're weak?

Vampire: Enlighten me.

Alex: Because...

Suddenly, Alex moved so quickly that it was as if he teleported right in front of the vampire, shocking him.

Alex: You are weak...because you still can't tell that I'm not human.

Alex's eyes brightened into a bright blue.

Vampire: Y-Your eyes—that's not possible!

Alex jabbed his hand right through the vampire's chest, causing him to start choking on his blood.

Vampire: P-Please...

Alex: It's no use begging now; it's already over.

The vampire's eyes lost their color, and his body became limp, falling to the ground in front of Alex.

Girl: AHHHH!

Alex: Girl, I suggest you go home now. Stay on public streets and avoid alleys, or you may find more like him waiting.

Girl: B-But D-Dana...

Alex: Your friend is dead. There's nothing to be done, go home and call the cops or whoever, but let me make one thing clear.

Alex turned his head towards the girl, his eyes shining as bright as ever.

Alex: You did not see me. Do you understand.

Girl: Y-Yeah, just please don't hurt me!

Alex: I won't unless you give me a reason to. Tell the cops or whoever that some other vampire started to fight this one for food, and in the chaos, you escaped, but your friend didn't make it. That should be believable enough.

Girl: O-Okay!

Alex: Go!

The girl quickly ran out of the alley as fast as she could.

Alex: Day 1, and I've already drawn attention to myself. Great going, Alex.

Alex kicked the body of the dead vampire before leaving the alleyway himself and returning to his apartment. Ms. Chen was just packing up her stuff and heading to her own apartment.

Ms. Chen: Ah, Alex, how was your meal?

Alex: It was delicious, Ms. Chen; I'll have to make it my new spot.

Ms. Chen: I'm glad you enjoyed it. You were out for awhile, so I thought maybe you got into trouble.

Alex: No, not at all; just enjoyed the sights.

Ms. Chen: I see. Well, allow me to be the last to say, Welcome to Redfall.

Alex: Glad to be here.
