CASSIE (AVERY) ᥫ᭡
I GOT up this morning with a long stretch of chronic fatigue, it felt like I had carried the weight of the world on my shoulders in my sleep.
Rising with a yawn, I went downstairs to start my daily routine by making Logan coffee and getting his pills ready. An image of the butterfly at the garden flashed across my mind and I couldn't help but smile.
It was really mind-blowing and calming to watch like a new form of therapy that no one had spoken to me of, I've never seen anything like it before.
Though I had the mandate to travel anywhere for work purposes, I couldn't go there without being supervised and the moment I finished it was time to return back.
It's amazing to watch something get liberated, it helps forget that my life is in the hands of Dexter as well as his life is in the hands of mine.
I grabbed my phone from the vanity where it was charging to see a pop up message notification that read, "Darcy's Cafe. Meet me there at noon - Jesse"
Letting out a sigh, I swiped the notification of course he'd need to get an update about how things have been, I haven't had the opportunity to keep him updated. Guess, I would have to find a decent excuse to get this over with now.
When I got downstairs, I took sight of the large glass window in the living room, clean and clear with a beautiful view of the outdoor pool. It's 4am and the maids probably forgot to pull down the curtains.
I shook my head and turned on my heels to continue my journey when I heard a large splash, my head whipped backwards to see an empty wheelchair close to the pool. Oh no, Logan.
Adrenaline quickly rushed out into my system as I threw my phone on a couch and sped to the exit all the way to the pool, jumping in without properly thinking things through.
Through the bubbly and unclear image underneath the pool I could see him slowly reaching the bottom of the pool with his eyes closed and few bubbles exiting his lips. I got to him immediately and held him firmly before making my way to the surface.
I placed his unconscious body on the floor and started chest compressions quickly. In no time, he coughed out the little water in his mouth and his eyelids fluttered open while he sat up to cough properly.
"WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?" I frantically yell. Is he out of his mind? Why would he think of taking his own life? Doesn't he understand how much I need him alive? He could die after my mission is over but at least not now.
Logan said nothing as he kept coughing. Suddenly he looked at me, "WHY DID YOU SAVE ME? WHY DID SAVE ME? " he growled, running his fingers through his wet hair.
Yeah, because I need you to tell me where your damned fortune is. Maybe that's what he'd like to hear.
Slowly I watched this man breakdown in tears, shamelessly. It felt like my heart was ripped into a thousand pieces like I was the one in pain and not him.
"Hey, stop. Why are you crying? Don't be such a sissy, " I rebuffed him as my lips trembled, setting up the stage for proper crying.
Following the weird and spontaneous idea in my head. I wrapped him with my arms, tapping his back softly as he cried extensively on my shoulder, pouring out whatever he had on his chest. His hot tears fell on my shoulder drop by drop, providing warmth to the cold chilly atmosphere and I held my lower lip in my mouth, holding back the tears which wanted to break free.
*
Minutes later and we were both sitting on the edge of the pool with our legs in water, I had pulled out from the embrace the moment he stopped crying, the moment I realized actually, I was almost lost in his warm scent but thank goodness I called myself back to sanity.
"What good can living bring? I looked up at my wedding portrait today, Cassie and for a second, I forgot that I was married. I wondered how it got there, I stared at it continuously trying to figure out who my wife was and then it hit me minutes later, " He sighed. "I'm literally a dead man, I am lame, my brain isn't functioning well. I wonder why Lois is still with me. I'm just pathetic, "
This is definitely bad news for us, he needs to spill the truth as soon as possible so I finish what I came for and head back to my destination then he can forget about his birthday.
"Of course, you're pathetic, "
"Huh?"
"You heard me, Mr. Wellington. You're really pathetic, you forgot your wife for a few seconds and death was the first thing you could come up with? Fine, let's say money doesn't solve everything, that no matter how much money and fame you have there's still a huge void left. Which is technically a lie. But you have a full bullet proof support system around you, you have an amazing family who'd do anything for your well-being and you'd dare to leave them behind, "
"A family that I would soon have no memories of?! " he boomed.
"Then forget them then! Forget their existence as long as you wouldn't leave, I am sure that your family wouldn't mind reminding you every single day of who they are to you. You have a reason to hang on, some of us don't but here we are, going through this shitty phase called life, "
Logan went silent as he mentally contemplated on all that I have said, a look of realization was marred on his face.
I think he's stupidly ungrateful, not everyone has a loving family, money and fame as a bonus and yet he wants to trash everything because of a minor setback. Aside from the fact I needed him alive, this dude needed to start looking at life with a different lens.
The day was slowly aging as I could see the sky now with a few clouds tinted with a light shade of orange, indicating sunrise. I stood up and stretched my back, "Let's head back before everyone wakes up, "
"Thank you, Cassie, " he said, his lips stretched into a smile.
