CASSIE(AVERY)
I helped Logan to get on his wheelchair as I pushed him slowly back into house. The multiple air conditioners in the building made things very extra chilly when we got in. Logan is humming a soft tune of Hozier's Take Me To Church which was surprisingly pleasing to hear. I shivered a bit but I closed my eyes and let out a deep sigh to get a grip of myself.
My calm resolve crashed like a glass cup when he stopped and tilted his head to look at me. His blonde hair is soaking wet and a few strands are stuck on his forehead, I resist the urge to pull them away to get a proper glimpse of his eyes glittering from underneath, his cheeks are slightly red probably from his crying session but it's attractive how this man could be hot and cute at the same time.
"Get a grip, he's married," my pesky subconscious mind did the honours of reminding me. He's good looking, I'll give him that but he isn't my type and yes of course, he's married.
"I think you should go on and clean up, I don't want you to catch a cold," he urged, drawing me back to reality.
"You haven't —"
"No objections, Ms. Hugh. I'll see you later,"
With that, he wheeled further away and went to his room whilst I went to mine and quickly went to take a long hot shower after which I wore a pair of loose pants and a large tee. Did I have any appointments aside dealing with Logan today? I mentally queried. Right, I have a meeting with Jesse at noon, then it hit me. I didn't take my phone in the living room.
It's a few minutes to breakfast, so I have time to spare, I dashed down the staircase and connected the dots from before, I dropped it on the couch. Soon, I had rummage through the collection of luxurious couches and turned leagues of fluffy cushions, I even raised the rug and my phone was nowhere to be found.
"F*ck!" I seethed, grabbing a fistful of my hair as my heart thudded loudly against my ribcage.
How could I be so careless with things like this? If anyone found that phone in this house and they got access to it then I'm dead meat.
Dexter would roast me alive or let me rot in jail, I can't see Jesse today not when my phone's still missing. Worse, I haven't even mastered this new phone number to know how to locate it.
"Good morning, Cassie," Heather's voice reverberated in the room and I turned to look at her with a forced smile, "Hi, good morning," I greeted.
She still looks normal so I guess she suspects nothing.
"Well, you're up early," she commented.
"Err…I slept so early yesterday, don't mind me," I chuckled, trying to act less suspicious but I think I'm making things even more complicated.
"Not a problem, dear. What would you like for breakfast? I'm going to the kitchen,"
"Anything would be fine with me, please," I grinned.
"If you say so," She muttered, turning on her heels as she made way to the kitchen.
It took a lot of courage to suppress the intrusive thought that suggested she was going to poison me with that meal.
I took a step forward towards my room with hopes to think of a proper plan when the rest of the family walked into the living room.
"Oh, she's already here, " Jesse said.
Dang it. I can feel my blood pressure increasing.
"Good morning, everyone, " I greeted.
"Good morning, Cassie, " Sarah and James chorused. James went to take a sit in the couch with one toddler in hand where Luke was already seated at as he took a cup of coffee a maid served him.
"Good morning, love. You're not going back upstairs are you?" Evelyn chirped.
Where else would I go? Or wait… do they want to kick me out?
"Err… "
"It'll start soon," Penelope announced, leaving me confused.
"What… "
"Pardon us, dear. We're about to watch a movie, it's a regular family tradition that Theresa incorporated for every Saturday morning, " Evelyn explained.
Oh..
"But I'm not…a part of your family, "
"Don't be such a bore, Cassie. You're under our roof, come on it wouldn't hurt, " Sarah added.
I need to find my phone. But who knows? While they're watching, I could hit the 'streets' to find it.
"Alright, let's watch, " I finally surrended.
Soon, we were seated and I don't get why they didn't just pick a movie night instead rather than asking the maids to pull down the curtains and turn off the lights as well. The only thing that illuminated the room was a small neon orb-like ight that portrayed little stars on the ceiling.
Logan came in with a bowl of popcorn which he probably took from the kitchen, he's already changed into a pair of black shorts and a white sweatshirt and he looks better than he was a few hours ago.
He carefully picks up a popcorn with his hands and softly chews before swallowing it with perfection, my eyes witnessed that in slow motion. I'm supposed to watch a movie, not him. What is wrong with me?!
I looked up to see a popular classic, 'Mamma Mia : Here We Go Again' on the screen, at least it's something I know.
The kids hum along with the opening song and I understand that they've watched this countless times.
More snacks arrive and I find myself gulping down glasses of orange juice and chowing down sandwiches as I struggled to figure out a plan to find my device.
The orange juice seemed to me a heaven sent medium of redemption as I suddenly had the genuine urge to pee, I quickly stood up, "Umm.. I really need to use the —"
They all whipped their heads to my direction, "Ssh" the family chorused.
I will gladly be shushed right now, I quickly dashed upstairs and used the restroom first before executing my
plan. Maids and several domestic workers were literally everywhere so I had to start from Evelyn's room, I shuffled through shelves and drawers despite my heart racing so fast.
I've never been this alarmed before even with a gun pointed to my head. Each room I checked produced the same result that heightened my fears, my phone was nowhere to be found.
The last one to check is Heather's room, I couldn't go through with that process earlier because a few maids were cleaning it up. Letting out a deep sigh, I turned open the door knob and walked into the room, shutting it quietly behind me.
The room was a bit identical to Logan's, maybe Heather also has a study as well, it wouldn't be shocking since she's literally a novelist and her workspace wasn't in here. I started out with the drawers when the door creaked open, causing me to fall to the floor simultaneously.
