Chapter 21 - CHAPTER TWENTY ONE

I'm waiting for her, am I? I guess that'll explain why I'm sitting at the entrance of my house underneath the makeshift bamboo bar, checking my wristwatch from time to time since it was 4pm and there was no sight of her.

It's odd to quickly get used to someone's company, she had said that she'd be coming back soon but the security guard stated that she left the house about an hour ago. I sighed and placed my headphones back on, raising my head up again to see her walking up to me. I took it off immediately.

"Baby boy, what are you doing outside? " she asked.

A warmth of excitement settled in my chest like a toddler whose mother had returned from a store.

"Nothing, just wanted some fresh air, " I answered, leaning on my wheelchair.

She nodded and kept moving towards the house.

"Wait!" the words fall off my mouth before I can catch them and she turns to look at me.

"Huh?"

"Err.. where did you go? "

She was casually dressed, regular Cassie style with a deep blue skirt and a white crop shirt paired. Is it weird to be curious?

She turned to my direction, "To see a friend,"

Oh. Fair reply.

"Was it urgent? You left in a hurry,"

"They were wondering where I was, don't worry… I didn't let them know about the surrogacy, it's top secret as your mother wants,"

Okay, top secret enough for us to change the topic.

"That's umm…okay,"

"Yes. Yes, it is. Are the others back?"

"No,not yet. I'm sort of waiting for them, care to join me?"

Cassie smirked, "Is there a drink in the bar?"

"I can't go in because of the stairs but I think there is,"

She hung her bag on her shoulders and walked towards me, went into the bush bar where she surfed through the cupboards which had mini refrigerators in it.

"Jackpot! " She exclaimed as she grabbed a bottle of red wine and brought out two cups which she rinsed with the wine.

"Nice way of improvising," I commented with a laugh.

She smiled and poured out the wine then came down and handed me a glass with hers in hand and the bottle in another. Carefully, she makes herself comfortable on one of the stairs and drops the bottle next to her.

Before I could take my first sip, she already gulped down the entire cup.

"Wow,"

"I'm really thirsty,"

I chuckled, "It's okay,"

Cassie poured herself another glass momentarily while we watched the sun carefully set, the blissful orange hues of the sky glistened on her irises as she took a glance of the scene.

I returned my attention back to my drink, I'm guessing that the family would be back by seven, it's six thirty so we have about thirty minutes left.

"Reminds me of the caterpillar from the garden,"

"Wait until you see the tulips bloom,"

"Hopefully, I'll be around by then. Did you take your medications? I asked Rosita to help me out while I was away,"

"Sure, ma'am. I did. I also spoke to Lois—"

"What did she say?"

I'm trying to play out our conversation from my head but I think talking about it would help, "She didn't sound happy to hear me though and spoke of prolonging the trip by another week,"

"Oh no.."

"I feel worthless, you know. Whenever she takes long on her trips, I head over to meet her if I wasn't busy so we'd come back together. Now, I'm not allowed to travel without medical supervision,"

"Hey, you've called. I think that's enough for now, just give her time she's not running off forever, she'll still return to you,"

That was soothing to hear, I terribly missed my wife.

"Do you think she's falling out of love or losing interest?"

Cassie paused and drank another cup of wine, "She just needs time to recharge. I don't know anything about love. And before you ask me if I've fallen in love before let's keep it at no with zero intentions of even falling,"

" Well, I was going to tell you to give love a chance, love is a beautiful thing,"

"With many issues too," she scoffed.

Nice reference with my current situation with Lois.

"Haha, very funny. Although there would be challenges, it'll be worth it, you know,"

"I'll pass. They're here,"

I tilted my head towards the direction of a Rolls Royce driving in, Aunt Heather and Evelyn along with Penelope and Jesse hopped out, one after the other. James and Sarah had returned two hours prior to when Cassie resurfaced.

They were totally exhausted from handling their kids who were already fast asleep as a tiny present for their parents to get enough rest and alone time.

Cassie rose to her feet with a yawn, "I'll see you at the dinner table, I'll go wash up, thanks for the wine,"

She made her way to the entrance where she started walking closely with my aunt and Jesse, Penelope following behind quietly. Which is a bit unusual, she's always very active after their usual outings, maybe she's just tired.

The maids came out to take the multiple shopping bags indoors and since I had nothing interesting going on, I decided to head in along with them.

Cassie looked back to see me and let out a sigh before probably taking permission from her companions to walk to me.

"It's fine, I can handle it,"

"It's grass, signor," she pointed out and stepped behind me to help with the wheelchair.

"But,"

"Don't be so stubborn," she snapped, pushing me indoors. "You should have used the automated one for tasks like this,"

"I just thought that I'd get used to this one as well,"

"Focus on getting back on your feet rather than getting used to wheelchairs,"

My heart stopped for a moment. Getting back on my feet? Was that even possible? She says it's so easy, like I could start walking in two minutes again.

"I have no hope of walking again" I whispered.
