Chapter 24 - chapter 24

The persistent beep of a flatlining tracker sounded over the overwatch room. It was haunting that a room so crowded with noise not moments ago was now abandoned of noise entirely. There was no name attached to the beep, but it was a sign that the worst had indeed happened as all of the feeds on the screens cut out to deprive the room of information. Momo's eyes widen as the lights go out, had someone really died? She thought the exam had dangerous qualities to it but-

"Damn it Nezu! I thought things were airtight this year!" shouted her father

Principal Nezu the bear/dog/whatever he is turns around, his little eyes poking over the side of the seat.

"I was informed by Power Loader that every precaution had been taken to ensure that no lethal force would be used by the arena traps." he simply says. Momo's eyes start to water as her father turns to her and her mother.

"You two better be out of here, I think I'm about to have one of my lapses in calmness." he mutters. Her mother goes to take Momo from the room, but she shrugs her off; walking to the principal/

"Who was it? The student! Where are they?!" pleads Momo.

Yaorashi yawns.

"Do you have to be so loud-"

"Shut up you! Just tell me where they are and I'll go out there and help!" the room is silent as Momo stares down the prinicipal. "... Please. Just let me help them."

-----------------------

Mirio, Amajiki and Nejire all stand on the wall, all ready for quick deployment should it be needed between the training grounds; Sir Nighteye also with them ensuring the young heroes stay on task... sort of.

"C'mon Amajiki! Sir would love to here your joke; it's hilarious!" cheers Mirio. Amajiki pulls his hood up and turns away.

"It's not that funny... really...."

"Don't worry Amajiki you don't have to tell it if you don't want to. But I'm sure it's very amusing" chimes in Nighteye. Nejire gently shakes Amajiki on the shoulders.

"C'mon ya little kitten! Be a lion! We all know how brave you can be!" giggle Nejire. Amajiki however blushes as he gets all of the attention.

"The three of you exist to torture me. I'm certain of it." he murmurs.

That's when the worst sound for them to hear goes off. A dull toned klaxon, signifying the occurrence of a serious incident amidst the exams. The big three all switch on immediately and ready themselves; Nighteye being the experienced professional takes the helm and scans around the various grounds.

"Amajiki, you go to Training Ground A, Nejire; B. Mirio; C. The staff will handle the other sites. Go, now." he instructs.

Amajiki takes off at top speed into the ground that lied below them whilst they spoke, the wings from the chicken he ate earlier allowing him to glide over the scene, he sees a great plume of gas starting to disperse; as well as two individuals on the floor- shit. Amajiki dives down as fast as he can and lands a ways back from the two and runs over to them.

"You two. Hey? You okay?" he asks.

There's a splutter from the blonde one wearing a gas mask as he slowly sits up. The one wearing a war helmet just hunches over spluttering. The blonde one takes the gas mask off and looks down at it.

"You saved me... Why the hell did you save me?" he asked gently.

The one wearing the war helmet finishes coughing his guts up before turning back to the spiky haired blonde.

"I have a small tolerance to the gas, considering I make the stuff. It made logical sense to give you the mask." he says, Amajiki carefully inspecting the two candidates.

"Are you both alright? Can you stand?" Asks the big three member.

The one with the helmet pulls himself onto his feet before a holding a hand down to the blonde one, he cocks a calculated smile onto his face.

"We're fine, thanks. Just a bit out of breath. Call me Mustard." said the helmeted one

"Katsuki." said the one holding the mask as he's pulled to his feet. Helped twice by the same guy, at least he was cool about it.

----------------------

Mirio enters the the training ground through the wall, his entry was right next to the carcass of the arena trap that had been sent flying. He was surprised by how far it had flew, it was practically leaning on the wall of the training ground it'd gone so far. He scans underneath the robot seeing if he could see anyone as he walks along, he gets to the end of the carcass, past the tattered caterpillar tracks as he sees a red haired young man holding someone in his arms... Oh god no.

"HEY, ARE YOU OKAY?" Mirio shouts as he runs as fast as his legs will carry him down the street to the red haired young man.

"She's hurt really bad and she won't wake up! Her arm's all torn up!" shouts the red head. Mirio finally reaches the pair, panting slightly as the red head held the young woman in his arms. "Come on Melissa, wake up damn it." he pleads.

Mirio's stomach turns as he gets a proper look at the young woman as he knew who this was, they'd met before. It was THAT Melissa. Melissa Shield, Professor Shield's daughter; he'd met her when he'd been working with All Might and Sir Nighteye, they always used his equipment.

"What happened to her?" asks Mirio.

"She fired herself into the air and took down the trap, her jetpack fell apart from the shockwave and she started to fall. I caught her before she hit the ground thank god, but her arm is all messed up, it must've been from the punch." answers the anxious red head.

Mirio and the red haired boy share worried looks as their friend lies in his arms, motionless, before she gasps for air and winces in pain as she wakes up.

"Shit! Shit shit shit. W-what happened?" groggily asks Melissa. Mirio and the red headed boy both sighing relief seeing that she was awake.

"You... took down that trap, just like you said you would." answers the red head.

"Really? I... I told you I could do it huh Kirishima? Heh. Oh, Mirio! Hello." says Melissa. Mirio smiling.

"Good to see ya still in one piece Melissa. Oh and uh, Kirishima? Good catch man." Mirio says happily. Melissa and Kirishima both smile, however Melissa's is short lived as she feels the pain shoot into her arm from the damage it sustained, it was a mess. All red and it felt broken too.

"My arm is... agh, fuck. That really stings." Melissa murmurs. Kirishima gently helps her back up onto her feet, as Mirio activates his communicator.

"Gonna need medical support at Training Ground C; serious injury sustained by Melissa Shield." informs the successor.

-----------------------

Nejire walks past the fully intact Arena Trap, looking up at it's lifeless and dormant stance, everyone she'd found had been A-Okay, she'd scanned from the air and found nothing so she thought one last sweep at ground level would be a good idea. Her communicator crackles into life.

"Nejire... Anything?" gently asks Nighteye.

"No sir, nothing yet." she replies looking around. Until she stops dead. Something had caught her eye on the floor, something that was always distinguishable. Blood. Blood that was running from a source. She takes a deep breath as she slowly walks towards the source of it, mentally preparing herself. She heads into the darkened and destroyed building that seemed to be the origin. She walks forward and sees the saddening sight, the origin of the blood.

A brown haired girl limply laying on the floor; the rubble practically scattered over her. She was bleeding from the head as well as a few puncture wounds caused from debris by the looks of it. Nejire sighs as she gently strokes the hair of the young woman, looking at the tag on her arm and going over the radio.

"I've found her. Ochako Uraraka... I'm so sorry, but she's not with us anymore." Nejire splutters, trying her best not to cry.

------------------------

A lightning bolt goes through Momo as she hears the name. It's just like it was before. A small part of her knew who it was going to be, it always seemed to be someone close to her, before fate decided to take its usual merciless swing at her. She silently turns and walks away, out of the observation room and down the stairs; she could hear her father shouting but she wasn't listening to his exact words. She just kept walking away, tears welling up in her eyes, it always seemed to be her that loses someone. Why was it always her?
