Richard felt as if a bucket of cold water had spilt over him, finding out that Barbara went to the lake as per his letter, although he had never sent her a letter of this sort. His heart went cold when he thought that it was a clear murder attempt. The culprit had used him to lure his fiancé to the lake and then pushed her inside. His face turned pale when he thought he was the reason for his fiancé's suffering for weeks.
Clenching his fists, he guessed that perhaps his father was after this incident. The Count wanted him to break his engagement with Barbara, and he knew how his father's methods were harsh and ruthless.
