Your hands are already full. At least let me hold a bag. Am I not your maid?" Misaki complained, pouting as she thought Aki might be struggle with all the groceries.
"It's fine. I can carry them. It's not like they're heavy," Aki replied, dismissing Misaki's offer. He adjusted the bags in his arms, making sure none of them were in danger of falling.
Misaki frowned, feeling a mix of frustration and admiration. After a few more stops, they made their way back to the parking lot where Aki had left his motorbike.
As they approached the bike, Misaki's frustration grew. "Now, can you give those bags to me, or are you planning to drive while carrying all of them?" she complained again, her tone sharper this time. She felt anxious seeing Aki doing all the work. Her pride as a maid was being trampled on repeatedly, and while part of her was happy to see someone caring for her, another part wanted to prove she wasn't helpless.
Aki chuckled at her determination. "Hold these two. I'll hang the rest on the guard," he said, handing her the bags that contained eggs and glass jars. He carefully hooked the remaining bags onto the side guards of his bike, making sure they were secure.
Misaki took the bags reluctantly, her brows furrowed in concern. She watched Aki with a mix of admiration and irritation. His calm demeanor only added to her frustration. "Okay, so we're going back to your house to drop these off first, right?" she asked as she settled behind him on the bike, wrapping one arm around his waist while holding the bags with the other.
Aki turned his head slightly to glance at her. "Why do you ask?" he questioned, starting the engine with a smooth, practiced motion. The roar of the bike came to life beneath them, rumbling gently as it idled.
"Isn't it obvious? If you put these bags with the rest, the eggs will break," Misaki reasoned, sounding like she was explaining something simple to a child. She tightened her grip around Aki's waist as the bike began to move.
Aki smiled to himself, feeling the warmth of her arms around him. "Don't worry," he said over his shoulder, his voice carrying easily over the wind. "These are for you. We're heading to your place."
Misaki's eyes widened in surprise. "Eh? All of this? You're kidding, right? I can't accept this," she exclaimed, her voice rising with disbelief. She felt a mix of shock and confusion. Accepting these groceries would make her feel like she was just leeching off Aki, taking advantage of his generosity. She didn't want to be seen as someone who was constantly benefiting from him without giving anything in return.
Aki felt her grip tighten around his waist, her body leaning into him as they sped through the streets. "It's not a big deal," he reassured her, keeping his eyes on the road ahead. "I just wanted to help out. Besides, you're always looking out for me. Consider this a small token of my appreciation."
Misaki's heart pounded in her chest. She was touched by his words but also confused we only met a week ago and you are bluntly lying about me taking care of you, while I only started working today as a maid for you'.
But accepting the fact that argument with him will be pointless she Sigh and rested her head lightly against his back, feeling the steady rhythm of his breathing. "You... really didn't have to do this," she murmured trying for one last time, her voice barely audible over the wind. "I don't want to feel like I'm just taking from you."
Aki's expression softened, though Misaki couldn't see it. "It's not about taking or giving," he replied gently. "It's about caring for the people around you. And right now, I care about making sure you and your family are okay."
Misaki felt a lump form in her throat, a mix of gratitude and embarrassment swelling inside her. She wasn't used to this kind of attention or kindness outside her family. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice filled with sincerity. She held on a little tighter, letting herself enjoy the moment despite her conflicting feelings.
As the bike continued down the street, the city lights cast a warm glow around them, creating a moment that felt both intimate and comforting, a silent understanding passing between them in the cool evening air.
Aki and Misa arrived at Misa's, slightly worn-down home. The faint sound of a television murmured through the open window, and a slight breeze rustled the leaves of a nearby tree.
As Aki parked his bike, Misa jumped off quickly, her face a mix of embarrassment and concern. She turned to Aki, trying to push him away gently with a pleading look in her eyes.
"You really don't need to come in, shijo- kun," Misa insisted, her voice low and urgent. "I'm sure you have better things to do, and it's just… It's not a good time."
But Aki, ever persistent, just smiled warmly and shook his head. "Nonsense, Misa. I've come all this way, and I'd like to meet your family. Besides, I have these groceries to bring in. It wouldn't feel right to just leave now." He spoke gently, but there was a firmness in his tone that left little room for argument.
Misa sighed, realizing she wasn't going to win this one too. She led Aki to the front door, opening it hesitantly. Inside, the house was small but clean, with signs of wear and tear that spoke to years of love and care despite limited means. The scent of a home-cooked meal lingered in the air, and family photos lined the walls, showing Misa and her younger sister, Suzuna, at various stages of their lives.
"Mama, Suzuna, I'm home," Misa called out, stepping inside and kicking off her shoes.
Misa's mother, Minako, appeared from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a towel. Her face lit up with a warm smile when she saw Misa, but her eyes widened slightly in surprise when she noticed Aki standing behind her. "Oh, Misa, you brought a guest!" she said, quickly composing herself. "Welcome, young man. I'm Misa's mother, Minako."
Aki bowed politely. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Minako-san. I'm Aki shijo, Misa's friend," he introduced himself, his tone respectful.
Just then, Suzuna peeked around the corner, her eyes bright with curiosity. "Hey, Sis. Is he the one you spoke of?" she asked, her gaze shifting between Misa and Aki. Misa introduced them, and Suzuna offered a wave.
After the brief introductions, Minako offered Aki some tea, but he politely declined, saying, "I brought some groceries for you and your family, Minako-san. It's a small gesture, but I hope you'll accept it."
Minako hesitated, feeling a bit embarrassed about accepting charity, but before she could respond, Aki added with a playful smile, "But if you don't take my groceries, I won't accept any tea from you. Fair trade?"
Seeing his genuine smile and realizing how earnest he was, Minako relented with a small laugh. "Alright, young man, you win. Thank you for the groceries. It's very kind of you," she said, taking the bags from his hands.
While Minako was occupied with the groceries, Aki saw an opportunity. He quickly slipped the smartphones into the grocery bags, careful not to draw any attention. He then caught Suzuna's eye and gave her a subtle nod, signaling her to come over. She approached him curiously, her head tilted slightly in confusion.
"Yes, Shijo Aniki?" she whispered, using the playful nickname she had adopted for him.
Aki chuckled softly at being called "Aniki," a term for an older brother. "Here, Suzuna," he said quietly, pulling out a phone from his jacket pocket and handing it to her. "This is for you."
Suzuna's eyes widened in surprise. "Mine? I... I can't accept this! I was just joking on the phone earlier..." she stammered, looking down at the sleek device in her hand.
But Aki's gentle, earnest expression softened her resolve. "It's yours, Suzuna. And there's no need to feel like you're asking too much. Just think of it as a gift from your new Aniki," he said with a wink.
Blushing slightly, Suzuna looked down, finally accepting the phone with a small nod. "Thank you, Shijo Aniki," she whispered. In her heart, she felt a warm appreciation for Aki. 'He's really kind... and a good person. I feel bad for thinking he was just some show-off,' she thought, guilt creeping in for her earlier doubts about his sincerity.
As they continued chatting, Misa noticed the exchange and raised an eyebrow. "What are you two whispering about over there?" she asked suspiciously.
Suzuna quickly hid the phone behind her back and smiled innocently. "Oh, nothing, Sis! Just getting to know my new Aniki better!" she teased, trying to divert attention.
Minako, watching from the kitchen, smiled at the sight. "It's nice to see you all getting along so well. It's been a while since we've had so much energy in the house," she commented, her voice soft with emotion.
Aki nodded, feeling a sense of warmth in the cozy, albeit modest, home. "Family is important," he said sincerely, looking at Minako, Misa, and Suzuna. "I'm glad to be here with all of you."
Misa, still slightly flustered by Aki's unexpected generosity and the ease with which he fit into her family, couldn't help but smile. Maybe, she thought, this wasn't such a bad idea after all.
