Chapter 38 - An unfair competition!

[ Helping others is a choice, like charity work.

Do it if you have the capabilities and more than the capabilities...

It is not wrong to put your own life before others!

The disturbance of the pastries resulted in the following. First, I got a free call coupon from Mr. Jerald and some of their names. Then I got to know that there were exactly ten spirits which made me even more resilient in not accepting any more responsibilities.

'Yet here you are doing charity?' is what I read from Lucas's fierce, judging eyes. I smiled at him.

Frankly, I don't mind if he does judges me, he just hasn't seen what I saw, no one sees. He doesn't know that my blackouts are never peaceful. Neither does he know of the demons following me everywhere.

I looked at the children in a daze, not crashed or even scratched. Playing hide and seek magically and some time later, nothing will be there to see.

Crap. I want to throw up my whole life. It isn't even like it was someone else doing this to me. I did it to myself, therefore I can't even complain. This feeling is killing me...

Only if I was the monster everyone thinks of me, I could leave everything behind and run. I know what I am doing is hypocritical, and it's only right to be the demon...

Unfortunately, I am not. Nor can I be. I took a step forward. Lucas blocked the way, looking up into my eyes with the same mature look on his face as day one.

"You don't have to give them anything if you don't want to! Haven't you noticed there is wild fruit everywhere? If they were really hungry, they would have eaten of them!" Lucas said from between his teeth.

He was talking out of experience, is what I could read in his gloving eyes. Someone with a past, maybe one darker than mine, is who he is. It makes me want to give him condolence but I know he doesn't want it. No one of my kind ever accepts pity.

I looked past him. Where there is gonna be a blood storm, I wish I would at the very least know when. Not to prevent it, no! But to ran away at a time that gives grandfather enough time to be in charge of them again. A reasonable enough time, not to give my always hard working guilty conscience more work.

His voice became louder, saying things I had noticed too.

"I was looking for water, and I went inside their kitchen. They are deceiving you, they had a full storage and their fridge was full to the brim too..." He said with mixed feelings on his face. Probably feeling guilty about lying to get into their kitchen, but also feeling deceived. A victory that leaves a bad taste in your mouth...

I yet again confirmed that he is a thorough person. A reliable child. One I had learned to be, so I wouldn't burden anyone.

I ruffled his head and give him a wink.

"I knew, remember? I am a priest of doom! Even though there are a lot of things I don't know, I have gotten to know enough I can't ignore."

I went closer, bringing my head next to his ear.

"What's your price?" I whispered, then backed off a bit to see his face. He had a funny face, like ones the road police makes when one tries to bribe them in the middle of the day, next to a camera.

He looked at me for a bit, then raised to his toes. Bringing his head next to my ear, before talking.

" I am not attending autumn's family gathering."

I looked at him for a few seconds before responding to his proposal.

"You got a deal!" I said, not digging any further, as I extended my hand.

He hesitantly shook it.

"I will try my worst, but no promises. I am too brilliant for that." He said arrogantly before ending the quick handshake.

Lucas really indeed tried, but his try wasn't enough. Even though he was trying to give a simple performance, brilliance pecked out here and there. It most definitely outshined Crimson's performance.

The little pink haired girl who claimed to be five years old was a total beginner. Even though following the notes, there was absolutely no harmony, and the sounds cracked now and then. Good for her age, I guess.

I was unsure how to react that Crimson stepped forward with a confident expression on her face.

"Grandpa said you live in an enormous castle. Since I won, I wish to come home with you with all of my siblings."

Her confidence made me speechless.

Lucas stepped forward. He had a jumped brow and an annoyed look on his face. Emerald stepped in front of crimson with crossed arms and looked at Lucas. Looking ready to attack him.

Lucas glared at her and then stretched his hand next to her.

A small hand took it. Shaking it with proud.

"Congratulations, really!" Said Lucas with a smirk on his face, shamelessly giving a small child sarcasm.

Then, ignoring the bright red Emerald, he turned his head to me.

"Should we go now? I am tired," He said, looking actually tired, must have been serious about the being stressed out part...

Before I could say anything, Gold jumped in, accompanied by Crimson's twin brother Flake, who had never left her side the entire time, gripping her skirt tightly.

A beautiful teenager girl with green- golden changing eye colour and long wavy golden hair, little shorter than Emerald, and an ice blue-haired boy with eyes of the same colour, hiding behind her. She hadn't given me her age, just glared at me with anger for a long time and took the pastry with force.

"We can't leave now!! Apple and Cinnamon are not here yet!" she screamed. So loudly that my ears felt like they were bleeding. Her tone had a ninety-nine percent resemblance to grandfathers. So did her expression.

"Can we leave her behind, please? My ears are falling off..." Lucas asked, murmuring from behind me.

I murmured back.

"I wish!"

"I can hear you two punks!" She retorted angrily, looking directly into my eyes.

What have I done wrong? She looked at me right from the moment I met her eyes for the first time. Why was she looking at me as if I had gravely offended her?

"How-" Before I could even start my snapping at her for her rudeness, Mr. Jerald cut my words by gripping my shoulder hard.

"Be careful of with your words. She is..."

He looked at her warning eyes, give her a small bow and continued.

"Your great-great grandmother's spirit and way older than you!"

Hearing that, Lucas, who was drinking from a bottle, choked on it. Looking at Gold as water flow out of both his nose and mouth.

"Cough! Cough! What? She is as old as fossils yet still hasn't learned to be polite."

His bravery is truly commandable. Even more when said in the condition he was in. I pretended to scold him.

Turning my back on her, I started with a thumb up!

"How dare you talk like that to an elder!" I said in an angry tone. I made two hearts and double thumb ups!

"Shame on you!" I said with a proud face full of smiles, then turned back to her, making a sorry expression.

"Hah!" she snorted as she turned around with an offended look and went back inside the building, banging the door as hard as it was possible.

With her absence, I turned to everyone else. Looking at them with narrowed eyes, if there were any more grown ups I would leave them here! I mean, even if they are some magical creatures, why on earth is my selfish and hot-tempered grandfather who always tramples on everyone's egos, saying that grown-ups should take responsibility for their own life is taking care of them?

"Is there anyone else older than 28 here?" I asked with hope.

Mr. Jerald raised his hand.

"I am the same age as your grandfather!"

"Ah, I meant other than you, sir!"

He took it the wrong way and started a fight.

"Do you mean I look old?"

"I have more delicious food at home!" I said with a smile.

He became all smiles, not even trying to behold his dignity!

"I will forgive you this once~~"

Taking my eyes off of him, I continued.

"Anyone close to 18?"

Lucas and Emerald both raised their hands!

Why? Why did he raise his hand too? Did I bring the wrong child? As much as I knew, he was only fourteen.

Both looked at each other, waiting for the latter to go first. Lucas turned his head in annoyance.

"I will be fifteen in 6 months!" He said confidently.

I stared at him, at least his the right child...

Then I looked at Emerald with anticipation. My hopes died as soon as I saw her face. As she looked at Lucas, she had the face of a defeated person, meaning no one older than fourteen here!

"I turn fifteen in 8 months."She said from between her gritted teeth as she also angrily went back inside the building.

Lucas puffed his chest proudly as he went to the car after glancing her way with a smug look on his face. Dumb child almost gave me a heart attack and is proud of himself!

"Tsk!" I tsked with disappointment. One older than a hundred and the rest under fifteen!

The tension between the two also gave me another burden. It worried me about our future living situation. I took a deep breath. In the worst situation, we will have them on two very far floors. So they won't tear each other apart. The tension wasn't only between the two, my beautiful nature had done its job yet again. I had found a hater in the blink of an eye!

"Ouch!" I covered my eyes with my hands. Now even the sun is attacking me. Looking at it with narrowed eyes, it was right in the middle of the sky. Hot and glowing. Unlike me!

It's already lunchtime. Wow, how time flies...

The thought of food turned my gaze to where I had seen tons of popcorns pop. It was quite the odd combination. White and red, the red sky and the white popcorns and a shiny silver head.
