Chapter 24 - Purpose

December 12, 2021

Words: Permanent

There is nothing permanent within the confines of this world, everything is but a fleeting presence which inevitably withers in the end of time. We may invest money, gather friends, create inventions, experience happiness, and other useless activities; everything is but temporary in our miniscule lifespan.

Nothing is worth anything. Walking through the sidewalk of a busy road only makes me feel the desire to cut the rope of my life. Ignoring the noise around me with headphones, I maneuvered through the sea of people only to hide in an alleyway.

Sighing, I lit up a cigarette to indulge in an unhealthy act. Turning my head, a man sexually assulting a female suprised me. The man glared at me, which I completely ignored and smoked my cigarette. The metal music playing in my headphones barely cut off the intense moaning beside me.

Finishing my smoke break, the man also finished. Handing out the pack of cigarettes, I offered the man a cigarette. He grinned and happily took it.

The groaning woman struggled to reach into her back pocket where she kept her phone. The man noticed. He grabbed a knife from his pocket and stabbed the woman. A faint scream left her throat before falling silent, bleeding in the alleyway.

The man dropped his knife, wearing an anxious expression. He turned to me only to notice the condescending smile I had. I chuckled, picking up the knife from the ground. Licking the blood of the woman from the knife, A surge of ecstasy enveloped me.

Nothing in this world is permanent, I believed that. However, when life left the woman's body, I finally found an answer. Death. The end of time. An inevitable event in human life. How fascinating!

The man beside me stumbled and fell on his bottom. He screamed at the top of his lungs and fled the alleyway. The busy sidewalk saw this and turned to the alleyway. The blood reached the sidewalk. A hysterical scream sent a wave of panic. Chaos ensued as I exited the alleyway with a bloodstained knife.

I Thrusted the knife towards the heavens, mocking the gods above.

"I've been chasing the one and only permanent thing in life. Finally, I found my answer," I whispered as the policeman pointed their guns towards me, demanding to drop my weapon.

Before the police had the opportunity to act, I quickly slit my throat.
