Su Nian couldn't recall what time she fell asleep, but she reckoned she must have slept for at least ten hours.
After freshening up, Su Nian originally planned to grab something to eat before training. However, as she took out the bread, she remembered her promise to Jing Mo, that she would go to his house for dinner around seven or eight.
Su Nian stashed the slices of bread back into her storage space and headed straight to the master bedroom, bringing out her exercise equipment silently, beginning her training without a word.
After two hours of training, Su Nian took a shower and changed into fresh clothes.
As Su Nian emerged from the bathroom, still drying her hair, she heard a knock on the door.
Immediately after, Jing Mo's voice followed, "Su Nian, are you ready? I'm all set over here."
"Ready, coming!" Su Nian replied, tucking the towel into her storage space, running her fingers through her hair, and then opening the door.
As soon as she opened the door, she saw Jing Mo standing there with a bright smile on his face.
Su Nian felt puzzled. Why was he always so cheerful?
Closing her own front door, Su Nian followed Jing Mo to his house.
The moment she stepped in, Su Nian was taken aback. Had he cleaned up his place after just one nap?
Wasn't this speed a bit too fast?
The previously messy living room was now neat and tidy. Boxes were neatly arranged against the walls, though there were noticeably fewer of them, likely relocated to other rooms. In the middle of the living room stood a small square table with two wine crates on either side, serving as makeshift stools. Not far from the table was a standing fan. Although not large, Su Nian felt a strong breeze emanating from it, providing a refreshing coolness.
Su Nian was curious and glanced at the fan a few more times. She had seen various types of fans while procuring supplies, but she hadn't seen one like this before. However, she shrugged it off; the world was full of strange things, and it was normal not to have seen everything.
The small table was empty, and Su Nian wondered what Jing Mo was planning to serve.
"Wait for me a moment; I'll bring it out," Jing Mo said, heading to the kitchen, while Su Nian glanced in that direction instinctively.
When Jing Mo opened the kitchen door, Su Nian was surprised to see a double-door refrigerator by the window. She hadn't noticed it when they moved supplies together yesterday.
Jing Mo opened the refrigerator and took out a stainless steel plate. Although Su Nian couldn't see what was on the plate as she was seated, she caught a whiff of crayfish.
As Jing Mo placed the plate on the table, Su Nian saw the contents clearly - crayfish noodles.
"And wait a moment, there's more!" Jing Mo rushed back to the kitchen and returned with two cans of cola. The cold cans emitted a chill, making them appear even more refreshing.
Jing Mo took a seat opposite Su Nian and handed her a can. "Here!"
Su Nian took the cola, opened it with one hand, and with a "pop," the cold air rushed out. A sip of ice-cold cola made her feel cool from the inside out, lifting her spirits.
Jing Mo took a big gulp and then fetched two sets of utensils, feeling a bit embarrassed when he returned. "It's my first time inviting someone over for dinner, so forgive me if it's not up to par!"
"It's fine." Su Nian replied. She had come empty-handed for dinner, so it wouldn't be right to nitpick.
Jing Mo served them each a bowl of noodles, adding extra crayfish meat to Su Nian's bowl. Su Nian took a bite and could tell that it was instant packaged crayfish, a kind of fast food.
Before the apocalypse, people would have been picky about such crayfish, claiming fresh ones were better. But now, getting hold of such crayfish was no easy feat, and Su Nian had stocked up on them.
While pondering this, Su Nian heard Jing Mo speak up.
"I sold some weapons to the base, and they rewarded me handsomely. This house is now under my name. The refrigerator and crayfish were what I asked for yesterday, and the base just delivered them."
Hearing this, Su Nian paused her eating. She had earned three years' worth of rent by scavenging from ten bald men. Jing Mo, on the other hand, sold some weapons to the base and got a house, along with additional rewards.
The term "handsome rewards" from Jing Mo definitely meant something substantial.
Not to mention, there was also a refrigerator and crayfish.
Although Jing Mo only mentioned the refrigerator and crayfish, Su Nian didn't believe that was all there was.
There had to be more!
So, what kind of weapons did Jing Mo sell to the base? They couldn't be the ones he displayed initially; those melee weapons were valuable but not worth that much.
Su Nian's gaze fixed on Jing Mo, filled with curiosity.
However, they weren't close enough for her to ask such questions yet.
Su Nian could only nod silently, indicating she had heard Jing Mo's words, then continued to eat quietly.
At that moment, Jing Mo's voice sounded again in Su Nian's ears.
"I'm actually a weapons merchant. The base wanted me to work for them, but I declined. I'm used to my freedom and don't like being constrained. The base compromised and said they'd call me for help when needed, with compensation negotiated separately. It's quite a good deal, so I agreed."
"A weapons merchant?" Su Nian repeated these four words softly, her tone full of puzzlement.
Was there such a profession before the apocalypse?
Or did their country have such a profession?
As her gaze fell on Jing Mo's silver hair, Su Nian felt a sense of understanding. Jing Mo must be of mixed descent.
She just didn't know which country his other half belonged to, perhaps a country where weapons merchants existed.
With the apocalypse having arrived, it wasn't surprising that other countries had such professions.
Su Nian nodded again, indicating she understood.
Jing Mo paused eating his noodles, leaned forward, and looked Su Nian in the eyes. "Do you want weapons?"
Seeing Jing Mo suddenly leaning closer, Su Nian thought he was about to do something and immediately became cautious.
But when she heard his words, Su Nian leaned in as well, "What weapons?"
The fact that the base was willing to pay a high price meant they were good quality!
If she could buy them, that would be excellent!
Jing Mo smiled brightly, straightened up, and said, "Eat first! After you finish, I'll show you. But this time, I won't accept cash!"
"Of course," Su Nian chuckled, "I don't have cash anyway."
