Chapter 17 - (17) Military Entrance Processing (MEPs)

"It's good that you all volunteered. You all made the right choice" said SSG Rodrigues. "Though you all volunteered, not all of you will make it through the fast-track basic training program, or basic training as we will be calling it. We are required to screen everyone for medical clearance. Sgt. Soh and Sgt. Park will be passing out some paperwork. If you are affected by or show signs of any of the following questions, check the appropriate box" he added as we received a stack of paperwork and pen. The questionnaire also has questions regarding your family history, answer the questions to the best of your ability.

"Make sure you have your name on your sheet, as well as providing all appropriate answers. You will be punished if caught lying. So please do not do so. Everyone here will be going to get additional clearance from the medical team, this just makes the process easier". You won't be in trouble for any unknown medical conditions. We don't expect every civilian to be able to fight, however we are requiring training as we're closer to the border. War hasn't reached us yet, but from the projections our city is 3rd on the list of war zones. It is our duty to equip everyone with the basic tool to play their part. Many of you should have already realized the danger we are in. Once platoons have been organized and everyone has been cleared, we will be starting registration and giving shots for those selected for basic training. Once everyone has completed their questionnaire, please also complete the acknowledgment and agreement form. Once all the paperwork has been completed form a line outside. Our medics will be seeing everyone for a physical, bloodwork and a full checkup. For those of you wearing jeans, or clothes that's not flexible, you can return to your dorm to change. If you live off campus, try to borrow a set from a friend. If you're unable to get athletic wear, we have a few sets in the other room you can change into."

As I'm wearing my E-grade equipment, which is flexible, I head straight to the medical building. This is where our eligibility will be determined. The medical building is an actual hospital where we did our internships/residency while we were students. The hospital is affiliated with the school, equipped with the latest medical equipment and also consists of many specialty clinics consisting of 5 stories. The hospital takes up ⅓ of the campus with additional specialties/ buildings/clinics off campus. This includes the children's hospital which is a 10-minute walk off campus, a dental and vision clinic about 15 minutes' drive off campus and a few minor buildings. Our university hospital, St. Raphael, is ranked amongst the top three medical facilities in the Western States. The medical building is a few buildings away from the science buildings and we have to pass what we've dubbed the scenic pathway. This sidewalk is surrounded by cherry trees on both sides. Walking from the science building, the left side of the pathway has a small lake. The right side of the cherry trees have a manicured lawn with grass the color of lime, and a circular fountain in the center. There is a statue in the center of the fountain with what looks like an angel with its wings spread wide. In the angel's hands is a white and golden looking jar pouring water below into the fountain. Beside the fountain is a set of mahogany chairs. No matter how many times I pass this way, I always enjoy the view. As I enter the door we are directed towards the largest room in the building, which is to the left of the lobby. The lobby area is taped off on the left side, leaving only the right side open for patients. The hospital is still open, however parts of the hospital are controlled by the military, such as the training rooms and auditorium where medical conferences are held. There is a stage in the very front, as this is often used to house guest speakers. I walk towards the stage, where a female soldier wearing a camouflage uniform is setting up a mic. She appears to be late 20's, her hair up in a bun and dark skinned.

"Good morning, everyone. I'm Sergeant White and I will be overseeing your eligibility. Everyone here will be undergoing a background check for safety reasons. You may realize that we have made temporary rooms as we have separated the auditorium between males and females. You will form a line of 5 and crouch or duck walk from the green tape to the red tape on the floor. Those who are able complete this will receive a slip of paper and should enter room 102 for females and 103 for males.

You will then have a full body check by our medics and recent medical students who have just graduated. When you are cleared you will be led to another room where you will form a line to receive vaccinations. Since you have all volunteered to join the military, your medical records have been provided by the school. Based on what shots you have received already, and your medical conditions, you will be given the additional vaccines you have not yet received as the military requires many more than your university. Once you have completed your vaccinations and are cleared by the medics, go to the gymnasium for the distribution of your gear as well as your temporary new housing assignments". As sergeant white was explaining the next steps, I looked around me, trying to get a hold of what's going on and plan out what needs to happen. I also notice the chaos as soldiers are moving around in uniform, temporary rooms are being formed to separate genders and subsections for military use. I can also hear the background noise as military personnel start to establish bases for their area of operations, talking about who will be stationed where and shifts that they will eventually form.

There are stacks of documents and medical equipment being moved around, as well as bottles of medicine being escorted by armed soldiers. We can hear people on radios in the background as they talk about certain priorities and requirements. Supposedly I did not expect to hear certain things as I thought they would have been private, but it seems that within the chaos being established, creating stations comes first. We can't hear all information, but it appears what we can hear is not private and wouldn't pose an issue. My hearing has also improved because I have started to cultivate along with the use of Space items, therefore I can hear a lot more information than those around me.
