Chapter 23 - Fighting for survival

At this period in time, there were a total of 50 military members in our community remaining. This group has been with Major Shikari for many years, as such they're really close. There are 2 first lieutenants, as well as a second lieutenant within this group of soldiers. The remaining soldiers consist of enlisted: one Staff Sergeant, two sergeant E5, As well as the remainder consisting of lower, enlisted soldiers. Of the 30 of us who were training in fast track bootcamp 25 became full-fledged soldiers and 5 became honorary members. The 5 people could not keep up with training due to how intensive it was. Due to lack of people, they were allowed to keep their equipment and became back up. Because of the situation the rest of us who were keeping up with training officially became soldiers. We were essentially sworn in on the spot by major Shikari. We were then broken down to those of us who had a degree, as well as the level of degree.

3 of us who received our PhD, were allowed to become officers, falling in line with major Shikari and the other officers. We basically shadowed the officers, participated in all meetings they held, and were privy to military secrets. The three of us with our PhD became captains and mostly followed/helped Captain Garcia who was the only one assigned to our area. 4 people were assigned as 1st Lieutenant and followed/shadowed 1st Lieutenant Davis.3 people were assigned a 2nd Lieutenant and followed/shadowed 2nd LT. Hernandez. 5 people with their BA degree as a double major, and or a minor became Sergeants and were spread out to shadow the other Sergeants and learn more about their role/requirements. The remaining people who graduated from the fast-paced boot camp became E-4's. We also were being paid by the military.

The remaining 5 people who were unable to keep up with training, the "honorary" members of the military, were not paid by the military. They were informed that pay would depend on the situation. At this moment in time, all collection fees were canceled. During boot camp training, we were already on a payment schedule, although at the lowest pay grade of E-1. Although those of us officially recognized as soldiers are currently being paid, we are not sure how long the military will last. After our ranks were assigned, weapons were distributed to all soldiers as soon as the chain of command realized what was going on.

When everyone around realized what was going on, everyone hounded the military for weapons but were denied due to qualifications, and limited weapons, as such many people on campus were denied weapons. An exception was made for those of us who have performed well so far, especially in shooting during bootcamp. This was a total of 5 of the 30 of us who were allowed/given weapons. I waived my need for a rifle and explained that I had a whip that is made of strong material that I would be comfortable with. This of course caused others to look at me weirdly, trading rifles for a whip. How can I explain that my whip is an E-grade equipment that can increase my stats and would not break so easily? Still, I stuck to my decision. I will use the weapons that I have. We were also told that there were not many weapons left after they were distributed. Major Shikari has a rifle, as well as a handgun. He also dispatched Soldiers after receiving their weapons to clear out all signs of animals when we realized the animals posed a threat. At this point, barricades were already surrounding the campus, including blocking off the hill outside the apartments.

There was also a group of 5 soldiers, including one of the E-5 's who were sent to guard our food, both in storage and at the cafeterias, in order to prevent theft. Everyone was informed to work together for us to survive. We were told that there were enough supplies that would last for at least a couple months. This excluded the MRE's specifically reserved for soldiers.
