Chapter 3 - Dysfunctional Family

His older brother Chase is a detective and tried to get Luke to tell him who was selling him blitz, but Luke wouldn't tell him anything. And for good reason. Tony is really popular and his family is really powerful in the upper supernatural community.

I know because my family is also in the upper society and I've crossed paths with Tony a couple of times. His family isn't as powerful as mine, but compared to most of my friends, he is on a whole nother level. I sit down in the chair closest to the window looking out at the view of the lake.

"You want something to drink? I've got water and soda." Luke says opening his mini fridge revealing blueberry mountain fizz and cherry banana fizz. I see his unopened Turkey Guacamole Bacon Wrap and Yogurt Cups as well. "As a matter of fact, I'll take a blue mountain, your bta wrap, and a yogurt cup." Giving him my most sparkling smike with a twinkle in my eye showing off my dimples, I say, "I haven't had breakfast." Shaking his head while chuckling, he places everything on the little table by me and takes a blue mountain for himself.

Opening my drink, I lift the bottle to my lips, swallowing the sparkling blue drink, loving the feel of blueberry-flavored tiny bubbles snapping in my mouth. I nearly drink half the bottle, sighing in content.

"Are you ready for Wednesday?" I ask him after finishing everything. "Yeah, I've decided to go pro and motocross. So I'm pretty much going to spend all of my time training."

Raising my eyebrows, I look at him like he's crazy. "You're going to spend a lot of time at G.O.'s where your ex Bree also trains?"

Shaking his head, he says, "It's not like that. Nikki and Ace also train along with Nate, Amber's ex and his friends."

Grabbing a bottle of water out of the fridge and throwing me one. "Look, I'm not too excited about all of the drama that's going to unfold either, but my therapist and the counselors all agree that Moodle Crossing will help me to not use. So everyone is just going to have to deal with it."

I ask, "Having to deal with your ex plus her ex won't make you want to use?"

Luke shoots me a look while rolling his eyes. "I know what you're worried about and that is no longer a problem for me. Me and Amanda are much more secure in our relationship now. Of course, before in the start of our relationship, in the back of my mind, I always thought she would break up with me when she got bored. It's definitely hard dating a girl from high society when you think she only sees you as a boy toy. "

"Didn't right before you came here you confessed that she treats you like a boy toy and that you still haven't met her parents? You also said not to call her when you got here because she wasn't going to come and visit you."

Running a hand through his hair, his chocolate brown eyes softens when he says, "I didn't mean for it to come out like that. Every summer, Amber's family goes to their vacation house on the moon. You know how expensive space travel is and her whole family goes up one time and comes back at one time. So once she's up there she's not coming back until the end of the summer."

" Oh that explains her not visiting you but what about her not treating you right?"

Giving me a small smile Luke says, " You would know if you bothered to get a social media account, like any of them would do. And I was wrong. Back then I was really insecure and messed up. We talked every day and last month she asked if we would become mates after we graduated. So things are great between us right now and I can't wait to see her."

I cant help but smile at the cute dopey look on his face every time he talks about Amber. Even though I feel the pain of loneliness, I smile some more and say, "That's amazing. Things are good between you and Amber and you're getting along with your brother. Plus you have plans to deal with your addiction. Not to mention I've never seen you more happy."

" Yeah, I'm a lot happier now. Anyway, enough about me. What about you? How are you doing?"

I'm great, excited to start senior year. I'm going to sign up for a lot of classes, do orchestra again."

" Of course, you wouldn't be you without being in the school orchestra."

" And archery." I say.

" You don't want to switch it up, maybe play volleyball or the swim team. Oh, I think drama will be a good fit." Luke says sarcastically.

"Ha ha ha, funny." I say not finding that funny.

Laughing so hard, Luke falls off his bed and proceeds to roll around on the floor. Not smiling anymore, I scowl at Luke's antics. "It's not that funny." I practically growl.

Gasping for breath and chuckling every five seconds luke says, "I'm sorry, it's just I cannot picture you acting." Stopping to laugh some more, he gasps out. "It's just, we'll be able to see right through you."

I wait a couple of minutes, then ask, "Are you done?"

Finishing laughing, Luke nods his head, saying yes. "That was a rhetorical question, asshole." I say, throwing one of his ridiculously ugly pillows at his head. Laughing Luke catches the pillow and lays down on his back, putting the pillow behind his head.

" How's your family? You know out of all of us you don't talk about your family much. And we're teenagers, we complain about our family all the time."

My heart starts to beat faster and I wipe my sweaty hands on my jeans, taking deep breaths to control my heart rate. Because Luke is a werewolf he would easily be able to tell if something was wrong with me since he knows my scent fairly well. None of my friends knows that my family is a part of the upper class. It's not like I'm lying to them really.

My grandfather is on the state council. The family is divided in half. One side of the family loves power and everything about higher society. They would do anything to gain more power, status, and wealth.

Then there's the other half of the family. They don't really like all of the games, politics, and power plays of the upper society, so they do normal things like become doctors and CEOs. One side of the family is in charge of the family businesses, companies, properties, and is trying to make our family into a house. Then after that a clan, then we would become a royal family. The other side of the family would just like to be a family, but it doesn't work like that.

24 years ago, our family was split because my mom at the time had run away. My grandfather was a council member and was in the press a lot. So when mom ran away at 18, it was a huge scandal. At that time my uncle Tobias had had enough. So him, Aunt Kiera and Aunt Amanda were done with the brutal training they had been put through as kids and refused to have their children go through the same thing.

Especially seeing how my mom Charlotte had run away without a trace. Uncle Tobias and Grandpa Calvin made a deal. Everyone now has a choice to go through Grandpa Calvin's training and what job they can do for the family.

Because our family is so big and strong, we're considered a pack and are tied together metaphysically. The pack is strong as its weakest link is what our grandfather Calvin always says. As head of the family, he can feel every bond between everyone even if one member of the family would break the tie, the whole family would weaken and Grandpa cannot allow that. So as kids and throughout our adult life, everyone has to know the basics. But because of the deal, everyone does not have to participate in the upper society.

I lived with my Aunt Amanda and Uncle Henry ever since my mom died. She appeared out of nowhere, on the verge of death with me at her parents' home when I was three years old.

Aunt Amanda and Uncle Henry took me in after everyone discovered that I was indeed Charlotte's daughter, even though I'm practically human.

I give Luke a small smile that's not really a smile. There isn't really anything to say. It's the same old, same old.

Aunt Amanda is still a professor at Duel Mix University, and Uncle Henry still owns Four Paws that I work at. I talk to Will and Hannah every now and then. You know our family don't really get together unless it's a holiday.

"You still think it's your fault?" Luke asks.

Pushing a stray strand of rose gold silver hair behind my ear, I say quietly. "It is my fault no one ever comes home. John and Will got into a fight because of me."

" Will was right and you know it." Clenching his hands into fists, he grits out between clenched teeth. "John had no right to treat or talk to you like that. And when he said something to your aunt and uncle, they did nothing as usual."

Closing my eyes and taking deep breaths, I try not to think about what Will said. "My daughter will not be around this toxicity. Until they start treating Harley as a member of this family which she already is. I'm not being around them!"
