Chapter 6 - Container of Sugar

I can't believe that I now have magic. I'll no longer be the black sheep of the family and maybe they'll even accept me.

Getting excited I thinking about telling Aunt Amanda that I now have magic. I end up bouncing up and down on my tippy toes while waiting for the taxi.

I try and remember what I learned in school about feeling your mana for the first time. Something about clear your mind of all thoghts and picture the center of your core full of color.

Then Mrs. Parkins said something about the first step, being able to see what color your mana is. Then she showed us a couple of breathing techniques. "Hmm, tapping my chin, I think of what breathing technique I want to use and decide on the one I'll use for yoga.

I close my eyes and focus on nothing but my breathing. Slowing down my breath, I focus on each inhale and exhale. Finding a steady rhythm, all sound fades as I enter what I think is my center. It's dark like night and void. Like emptiness that stretches on and on.

A horn blows and I lose my focus. Opening my eyes, I see that my ride is here and get in. On the way to the station, I think about the state my mind was in.

It was like my body disappeared, but didn't. Like my mind had a body and my physical body no longer existed.

I arrive at the station and get on the tram, headed for home. Two hours later, I hurry up and leave the tram station. Instead of going back home, I decide to go to work at FourPaws at five like I'm supposed to.

Arriving at FourPaws, I walk in and see Maddie, a 21-year-old, University student behind the desk. Today her hair is down in golden twirls and she's wearing a lot of makeup. Blake, my older cousin, must have worked today. She's been into him and all of my other male cousins since she started working as a receptionist here two years ago.

Blake was adopted by Aunt Kira and Uncle Tim when he was a baby. And besides just having the last name Gold, he has a lot of power. The usual for any Gold. Blake is a dual elemental and a dual shifter too. He controls earth magic and air magic, plus the benefit of being able to shift into a leopard and a werewolf. Blake is only 22 and is still in university to become a veterinarian, which is why he's working here.

"Hey Mandy, is my uncle here yet?"

The fake smile she had on when I first entered disappears when she realizes it's just me and not a customer. Flipping her hair she says with obvious disdain and attitude at having to speak to me, "No he left around 3 today. Rachelle is in charge tonight."

I reply with an okay as I head into the back. I open my locker and put on my dark green FourPaws apron. I head futher in the back to do my job of taking care of the animals in the backroom.

My job is to clean up any droppins, give them food and water. When it's feeding time, bathe the ones who are scheduled for a bath, give the medicine to the ones that are sick and help out when needed when a pet is brought in. Six hours later, it's 10 o'clock. My shift is over, so I head on home. Once I'm home I change into pj's and immediately crash, exhausted from everything that has happened today.

The next day, I wake up at noon and start my day by eating cereal in bed and watching cartoons until evening. Around 3 p.m., I take my bowl upstairs into the kitchen wearing a white tank and a cute pair of pj's with matching slippers.

I see my aunt Amanda in jeans and a buttoned down blue with a white stripes top on sitting on a stool at the counter drinking what smells like a caramel hazelnut mocha latte, reading something off of her neo sketch.

"Morning, Aunt Amanda." Blonde hair in a ponytail, she looks at me up and down. And I do everything I can not to smile like an idiot.

"Morning for you huh? Stayed in bed watching tunes all day I presume." Laughing I grab myself a coffee cup and fill it with the rest of the coffee in the pitcher.

Turning around I say, "I learned from the best. On any Sunday when I don't have plans, I sleep in and spend the rest of the day watching cartoons like we used to do when I was younger."

Smiling, I pour some caramel macchiato into my coffee. I point at the sugar about to ask Aunt Amanda can she pass it here, when all on it's own the container of sugar slides right towards my hand.

I stare at the container of sugar wide eyed with my mouth gaping open not believing what I just saw.

"Oh my god! I'm a telekinetic! I can move objects with my mind! This is unbelievable, I actually have a power! I have magic now." With a huge grin on my face I practically scream. "Did you see that? I have telekinesis. Woah!"

I pump my fist in the air. "Yes!" I'm laughing like crazy.

"What was that?" My Aunt Amanda asks with a suprised look on her face. "When did you come into power? And why didn't you tell us?"

Staring at me with wide blue eyes as wide as my own, her face breaks out into a smile and she gets up and hugs me. "You came into your power." She leans back with a hand on my shoulder with a gentle smile she brushes a strand of my hair behind my ear.

Looking at me in my eyes she softly says with watery eys, "You came into power." Her shoulders sag in relief, like a huge weight is being lifted that she no longer needs to carry.

Wiping her eyes she pulls herselfback together. "You'll come with me to the university tomorrow, that way you can be tested and we'll know if you have more powers than just telekinesis. Okay, does that sound good?"

Smiling while surpressing the urge to cry I nod my head at her in agreement. "Yeah, that's fine."

Power stones are able to tell you what kind of power you have and how powerful it is. Power stones are so expensive only schools or government buildings and Guilds have one. Unless you're like crazy rich.

"Harley, I don't think you should tell anyone besides me and your Uncle Henry about your powers until you get a better handle on them." Aunt Amanda said with a concerned look on her face.
