"What's your daughter's name?" Kelvin asked. He didn't know Mr Riley's daughter and he couldn't protect who he doesn't know.
"She applied for her internship in your company and I guess she was accepted. I know my daughter, she'll always do her best to reach her goal." Frederick replied. "Kelvin, please see my daughter as an image of your mother and protect her.
"Really?" A devilish smile formed on his lips, "If I can see my mother again..., I won't protect her instead, I'll kill her for not protecting herself." He walked closer to Frederick, moving his head closer, he whispered in Frederick ear.
"I can't guarantee your daughter's safety if I see her as my mother"
Frederick understood Kelvin words. He knew how much kelvin loved his mother and when she died his whole life became a frozen hell.
With a smile on his face, "I hope you can keep to your words." Frederick said and started walking away.
"My words?" Kelvin mused as he saw Mr Frederick's figure walking away.
Meanwhile, Selena woke up before the first ray of dawn. She felt too weak to get off her bed as the thoughts of last night came to her mind. "Was her mum and dad really hiding something"?
"God please keep my parents safe." She prayed silently and mustered her strength to get out of bed.
Having a proper shower and preparation, she wore her business suit which is a striking black suit with matching trousers. Wearing the suit, she applied a minimal make up, making her natural beauty revealing. She tied her hair in a ponytail and adorned her neck with a silver necklace.
Fitting into her black heels, she took her black handbag and made her way downstairs. She got to the dining room and her mother was already seated there while having breakfast. Selena walked towards her, placing a soft kiss on her mother's cheeks from behind, she greeted good morning
"Good morning mum," Selena greeted and sat down opposite her mum.
With a smile on her face, Mrs Riley replied, "Good morning sweetheart. How was your night?"
Serving a small amount of pasta on her plate, Selena answered, "It was fine mum. What about you?" Looking at her mother's eyes, "Are you alright mum?"
Mrs Riley heard concern in her daughter's voice, she knew that Selena was referring to last night. Even though she wished she could act like last night never happened, she knew it was impossible. This daughter of hers was a worrywart when it came to the people she loves.
Pretending to be alright, Mrs Riley faked a smile and changed the topic. "You never told me how your day went yesterday. Tell me dear, did you get accepted?"
With a soft smile on her lips, she answered, "It went well mum and I got accepted." Putting a fork of pasta in her mouth, she continued. "Where's dad?" Waiting for her mum's reply patiently.
The question came as expected but yet Mrs Riley felt her food choked in her throat. Pouring water into her glass cup, she gulped it down in one go.
"Mum, are you alright?" Selena said in a rush of concern.
Dropping the cup down, Mrs Riley answered with a half smile. "He said he was having an early morning appointment and it was important so he went out early."
"Hmm...," raising her head up to look at the wall clock, "This is just few minutes to seven. What important appointment would be placed as this early!" Returning her attention back to her food, "Come to think of it mum, dad never told me what he really does. Like his career or something, he only told me he works for the government."
"Well, my dear your father is like an agent for the government." Mrs Riley said.
This was what Frederick told her before they got married. Believing it for so many years she felt heartbroken to hear the real truth last night. "Government agent indeed"she scoffed in her head. Was she really going to tell her daughter the same lie her husband told her?
How long could she keep on hiding things from her daughter. Of course she was ready to keep her mouth sealed if it means her daughter will be safe and happy. With a new resolve, she smiled.
"Your father is into a professional career okay, so don't worry about what he does and just focus on your goal." Taking Selena's hands and placing them in hers, Mrs Riley squeezed her daughter's hand gently.
Selena looked in her mother's eyes, she could see something different but yet she couldn't pinpoint what it was. "Mother...,"
Cutting her off,Mrs Riley spoke. "Dear, I know that you're worried over me and your father but I want you to know that we're safe and okay. We're happy having you as our daughter and there's nothing we want more than to always see the smile on your face, it brings joy to our hearts."
Mrs Riley sighed and continued, "Please, I don't want you to think that we don't love you..."
"Mum!" Selena cut her mum. "I can never think and I've never thought that you and dad don't love me." Standing up from her seat, Selena moved closer to her mum and crouched down beside her.
"I don't know what you and dad is going through neither do I know what is happening but I know one thing. No matter what, I'll always love you and dad and I'm forever grateful for having you both in my life."
Mrs Riley felt her daughter words sink deep within her, yes, this daughter of hers was really a blessing. With a drop of tears forming on her eyelid, she hugged her daughter, "Thank you my angel." Mrs Riley said and Selena stroked her back gently.
Staying like that for few minutes, the mother - daughter duo conveyed their emotions silently.
After the morning chat with her mother, Selena left the house heading to work. Taking a cab, she arrived at the MWC. Today was another day and she anticipated what it might hold.
With that anticipation, she walked pass the walls of each floor, greeting few staff and interns on her way, she arrived at the 23rd floor meant for interns.
She settled into her designated workspace, and prepared herself to begin her work. Turning on her computer, she started going through some files on it.
"Good morning, I'm Veronica.." Selena heard a voice and lifted her head from her computer screen. Looking at the lady in front of her, she smiled sweetly and replied.
"Good morning Veronica, I'm Selena and it's nice meeting you."
"Nice meeting you too. Are you also an intern?" Veronica asked and waited for a reply which she got. "Yes, I just resumed today."
"Wow, I resumed two weeks ago but it still feels new to me." With a light chuckle she continued, "So who are you going to be under?"
"Under?" Selena asked innocently
"Yes, you know like..., Who's going to be your mentor?" Veronica explained and Selena lips curved in a 'O' shape.
"I don't know, I wasn't told anything like that yesterday."
"Oh! well, Maybe you're going to find out who your mentor is later in the day..., anyways I'm your next neighbor, my desk is over there." Veronica said and pointed to the direction of her desk.
Going back to her seat, "I'll be here to help if you need anything." She said and received a thank you from Selena.
Selena sighed before turning her attention back to her computer. She wasn't having anything to do yet and worst of it all, she doesn't know her mentor. "I guess this is better than staying idle." She muttered under her breath.
"Selena, the CEO needs you in his office now..." Lauren said.
