Chapter 9 - Chapter 8: Chilling Out In Inkopolis

After 5 more Turf Wars, most of them being wins, Roenaldo figured that he had enough money to purchase what he wanted for his apartment. With that known, he said his farewells to his teammates before leaving the Lobby in search of a furniture shop. Not finding any such place in the fairly small space of Inkopolis, Roenaldo instead continued his search in the area where he found that MakoMart. Sure enough, he found a store called "Sea, Shore & S'more" a good walk away. He walked through the revolving door and stepped into a large space filled with the staples of home design, including the likes of lofty beds, smooth tables, and linen rugs. He walked towards the front desk where he met a lobster guy wearing a green suit. "Hello there, sir," he said, "Welcome to Sea, Shore & S'more. Are you here to buy some things?" Roenaldo nodded, answering, "Yeah, but I'm not looking for much. Just some tables, posters and such." The lobster replied, "Okay then, I'll just hand you a clipboard so that you can write down the items that you want, and then you can bring it back to me so I that I can arrange a delivery to your address. Sound good?" The lobster retrieved a clipboard from his drawer and handed it to Roenaldo before saying, "Happy shopping!"

Roenaldo proceeded to walk throughout the store, past all the Inklings and other sea creatures so that he could begin his buying. Tired of propping up his food with his hands, Roenaldo sought out a table first, coming across one made of spruce wood for 500 coins. Next, he walked through the aisles in search of a cushioned, Oakwood chair, and he bought one for 200 coins. Finally, he purchased a blue anglerfish lamp for 600 coins and a bubble-themed comforter for his bed for 300 coins, and he was done. He wrote down his address in the designated box at the top of the paper and traversed back to the lobster to hand him his list of items and the 1,600 coins, to which the lobster said, "Okay, sir, our delivery crew will be at your house soon. Thanks for shopping with us!" Roenaldo then existed the store and headed back to Inkopolis Plaza to wait for his order.

Past Booyah Base, Roenaldo noticed a lone arcade machine propped up against the wall. He approached closer to it to see that it was for an 8-bit game called "Squid Jump" and that the protagonist was a white squid holding a yellow Zapfish. Flashing on the screen was a message reading, "INSERT 5 COINS TO PLAY." Feeling intrigued, Roenaldo retrieved the required amount from his bag and watched as the machine made a chime noise and flashed to a screen with the white squid and a series of platforms. Seeing that there were only 2 controls, those being a joystick and a red button, Roenaldo experimentally pressed the button, causing the squid to compress slightly. Other than that, however, nothing happened. Roenaldo then tried pressing the button longer, and the squid compressed itself down further. When Roenaldo released the button, the squid suddenly rocketed upwards onto the next platform. With this new information, Roenaldo once again held and released the button, allowing the squid to reach the height of the next platform, which was to the right. Using the joystick, Roenaldo was able to maneuver the squid so that it landed safely on the platform. The next platform was positioned farther away to the left than the last one, so Roenaldo coiled up the squid and tried to move it over to the platform. Unfortunately, he missed the mark by a tentacle, and he landed all the way to the bottom. He looked disappointingly at the squid, grumbling, "Oh, come on, I totally made that jump." As he was saying this, a wave of purple ink came rising up from the bottom of the screen. Roenaldo gasped as his character immediately died to the rush of ink. A picture popped up indicating that Roenaldo had 2 lives left.

Roenaldo shook his head, saying, "Okey dokey, looks like I just have to be faster!" With this mindset, Roenaldo bounced back into the game and executed the controls to make the squid jump. He bounced to the left, he bounced to the right, and he performed movements good enough to leap up and grab a Zapfish suspended in the air. Roenaldo smiled as the word "SUCCESS" flashed on his screen, followed by an abrupt transition to the next level. Here, the platforms were moving, so Roenaldo made sure to plan his movements so that he wouldn't miss the platforms. With concentration, Roenaldo managed to get through the level without getting touched by the approaching wave of ink. "Huh," he thought, "Who would've thought that I would be so good at this game, especially since I just started? This must be natural talent!" Roenaldo continued on to the next section, where he could only see one platform on the screen. Once he jumped up to it, he noticed that the next platform was impossibly high up; there was no way that his squid was going to be able to make it up there. Then, he noticed what looked to be a red pufferfish suspended in midair, and it looked like Roenaldo could reach it. So he made his character jump towards it, resulting in the squid being launched straight into the air. Unprepared for this sudden acceleration, Roenaldo forgot to steer his character in the right direction, resulting in him dropping down to the bottom yet again. Knowing what would happen if he remained inactive, Roenaldo quickly made the squid jump to the platform above only to be met with a cruel fate: the pufferfish could only be used once. Left helpless, the squid was again engulfed by the incoming purple wave.

Now with only one life left, Roenaldo fixated his sight on the screen, not wanting to get a game over on the 3rd level. So he jumped and jumped, taking note of the properties of the pufferfish so that he wouldn't fall. With his innate skill, he was able to grab the Zapfish and move on. The following level contained yet another new addition: a jellyfish. Roenaldo made his character jump towards the creature, causing the squid to start sparkling. Unaware of what this meant, Roenaldo rapidly pressed the red button in the hopes of making something happen. Unfortunately, this endeavor proved to be fruitless. In a last ditch effort, Roenaldo made the squid jump up and down over and over again, aiming to maybe unlock a new secret move of some sort. Despite these efforts, the only thing waiting for Roenaldo was a red "GAME OVER" screen. Roenaldo frowned, complaining, "Ah man, I didn't even know what to do! It would be nice to have some instructions…" Roenaldo decided that he didn't want to waste his time any further, so he declined when the game asked him if we wanted to continue. Instead, he went over to his apartment to see if his order had arrived.

To his surprise, the delivery truck had already finished unloading his items to his front door. "Wow," he thought, "These people sure are fast. I mean, I only ordered so many items, but still." He went ahead and moved the items into his apartment, noticing how each part except the lamp and comforter were disassembled. He face palmed as he realized what this meant: he was going to have to build his furniture. Thankfully, the boxes that the furniture parts came in contained instructions for each object's construction. Using these pamphlets, Roenaldo was able to make his desired furniture in the span of 30 minutes. Roenaldo looked at his creations with a sense of accomplishment; his apartment now felt more like home. At that moment, Roenaldo realized that he had planned to meet up with Cap'n Cuttlefish to continue his Zapfish retrieval quest. So he left his furniture and his apartment and travelled to the manhole in Inkopolis, once again making sure that no one was watching.
