Chapter 13 - Chapter 12: Octoling Opponents

After a major amount of grinding, Roenaldo took his Splat Roller and sat down on a bench. "Okay," he said, "This is good. I'm making good money from these fights. But how am I going to do when I have to pay that huge monthly fee? I need to find some other way of getting money." As he thought of a solution, Roenaldo remembered his role down in Octo Valley. With a plan baking in his mind, Roenaldo dove into the manhole to consult with Cap'n Cuttlefish.

"Hey captain," said Roenaldo upon entering Octo Valley, "I have something that I want to talk about with you." The elder squid looked up at Roenaldo, saying, "Alright, bucko, what have you got?" As Roenaldo put on his Hero Suit behind a tree, he explained, "So, I was recently told that for me to keep my home in Inkopolis, I'll have to pay rent. Since I'm saving the world and all, would you be able to pay me?" Cuttlefish shook his head, replying, "No can do. The New Squidbeak Splatoon is already low on resources, so there's no way that I can afford to reward you for your efforts. And unless you forgot, I'm the only one who knows about this Octarian menace; it's not as if I can get another group to sponsor you or anything! Besides, what's a little money compared to the satisfaction of protecting your dear city?" Roenaldo thought this over for a minute. Although he was still worried about his financial status, he did see merit in the captain's words. As his mother told him, a truly good person doesn't help others for their personal gain. "Oh," said Roenaldo, "Okay. I understand. Well, don't think that this is going to stop me from doing my job here. Whether or not I get paid for it, the fate of Inkling-kind comes first. The captain smiled, responding, "I couldn't have said it better myself. Well, in that case, you had better get a move on. We only have one more Zapfish to collect before that big kettle in the 2nd area opens. I believe in you, Agent 3!" Roenaldo nodded before tightening his headsets and making off for the 2nd zone.

Once he arrived there, Roenaldo travelled to the northwest part of the skatepark to find another hidden kettle. After revealing it, he dove inside to find himself in a strange environment. Instead of being in a place typical of the usual mission, he instead found himself outside of what looked to be a saloon. Feeling somewhat confused, Roenaldo approached closer to the bar with his Hero Shot at the ready. As he neared the door, he heard male and female voices speaking and laughing in a foreign tongue. Roenaldo carefully peeked through a window to find a whole group of girls that looked like him, but something was off: the tentacles on their head were red with suckers that were on the outside rather than the inside, and they also seemed to be taller than Roenaldo. Furthermore, their eye masks lacked the black connecting strip like those of Inklings. "Oho," said Cuttlefish through the headphones, "Octolings! What are they doing here in this pub? What gives them the right to be having fun while we're in the middle of this struggle?" One of the Octolings reached behind her table to pull out a Zapfish, causing her friends to each raise their jugs of beer while making noises of happiness. They then clinked their jugs together, took a hearty swig, and made their way out the back door of the saloon. "Ahoy," exclaimed Cuttlefish, "Those scallywags are making off with a Zapfish! Hurry, Agent 3, get after them!" Roenaldo quickly got up to give pursuit, but his sudden movement caught the attention of one of the Octolings. She pointed at Roenaldo while making an angry sound, alerting her brethren of the unwelcome intruder. Only the females picked up their guns and rushed out the door, meeting Roenaldo on the fake sand area outside the bar; the males continued to enjoy their drinks. "Uh oh," said Cuttlefish, "Looks like you're going to have to fight your way out of this one. Keep your wits about you, Agent 3!"

With that, the battle had commenced. Roenaldo, learning from his previous battles in Turf War, decided not to charge headfirst into the fray. Instead, he opted to practice good spacing when fighting these numerous foes. Fortunately for him, most of the Octolings were still under the effects of their drinks, so their aim was slightly off. Roenaldo took advantage of this fact and targeted the Octolings that had a slight wobble to their step. Although he was more experienced with the Splat Roller, he still did very well with the Hero Shot, especially due to its power. With all the intoxicated Octolings out of the way, Roenaldo was only left with the few sober ones, which gave him quite a bit of trouble despite their small numbers. He ducked and weaved most of the enemy team's shots, still taking quite a bit of damage from the purple ink of the octopi. Still, he pressed on, eventually eliminating all the hostile Octolings. "Very nice job," said Cuttlefish, "You sure showed those Octolings who's boss! Now all we've got to do is track down those runaways!" Roenaldo made his way towards the area where the group of 4 Octolings had escaped to, finding a lone UFO placed on the sand. He entered through the small door to find a cockpit with many strange devices inside as well as an electronic map displayed on the wall. Although Roenaldo could not read the words present in the room, he recognized the shown picture as a place from Inkopolis. "Hey," said Cuttlefish, "That's Kelp Dome! Why would those Octolings be headed there? You know what we must do now, right? Try to find a way to start this thing up!" Roenaldo looked at the flashing lights and complicated designs present in the UFO, trying to make sense of it all. Left with little choice, he simply mashed the controls in the hopes of causing something to happen. As expected, the UFO started shaking, sputtering, spinning, playing a strange melody, and performing many other miscellaneous actions. After a lot of trial and error, Roenaldo managed to make the UFO rise into the air. Once the vehicle reached a certain height, it automatically zoomed forward, following a set path towards its intended destination. Roenaldo, who forgot to use the seatbelt provided, tumbled towards the back of the UFO.

As fast as the trip started, it ended, and Roenaldo was at Kelp Dome. He rubbed his head as he made his way back to his seat only for a hole to open beneath him, sending him falling to a spawn point just like one in regular battles. Apparently, no one was around to witness the events that were unfolding; Kelp Dome was not selected for that day's Turf War arena. "Ahoy," said the captain, I'm picking up a reading of the Zapfish! Looks like those Octolings have kept it for safekeeping near the center of this map. And I don't think they're going to just let you waltz on in and take it. Well, Agent 3, kids like you are always playing those Turf Wars, aren't you? This should be no problem for you, then." Roenaldo looked around at the greenhouse-like landscape that he was in. For him, the area was both familiar and unfamiliar; while Kelp Dome was a known Turf War stage, he had never fought on it. That being said, he was able to best a whole group of Octolings(although this was nothing major due to their mental state) so he felt pretty confident on his aptitude. After activating the dormant spawn point, he set out to rescue the electric fish.

Starting things off, Roenaldo did not face any enemies on his path to the Zapfish. He was even able to pick up a good amount of power eggs that were scattered all over the place. That was all until he saw something purple zoom through the air with a stream of purple ink ejecting out of its behind. It landed feet away from Roenaldo and transitioned from its purple octopus form to become a red-tentacled Octoling. Unlike the previous, more casual-looking Octolings, this one was wearing large, grey, metal goggles with purple holes on the lenses, and she was wearing a metal crop top, black shorts and dark brown leather boots, causing her to show a lot of skin. "Wow," said the captain, "These Octolings sure change fast. Stay on your toes, Agent 3!" The Octoling gave Roenaldo little time to react as she opened fire with her grey, Splattershot-like gun, prompting Roenaldo to dodge to the side. He attempted to shoot back only for his foe to dive into her ink, allowing her to evade. Roenaldo looked around confused until the Octoling popped up behind him, shooting him in the back. As a result, he was splatted, with his ghost travelling back to the spawn point.

As his body reformed, the captain said, "Looks like it's time for another one of my nuggets of wisdom. You must keep as much of the area under your control. If you don't, you're bound to get overwhelmed by the enemy. So, paint like there's no tomorrow!" Roenaldo nodded, saying, "Okay, thanks for the advice." Roenaldo went straight back into the fray, meeting the Octoling back where he fell. The Octarian looked surprised for a moment at her enemy's reappearance before focusing on eliminating her target. Taking his superior's advice to heart, Roenaldo shot as much as he could around him, giving the Octoling little room to move. All he had to do at this point was shoot down the octopus, and his firepower was greater than hers. As a result, he was able to get a revenge splat, sending the Octoling's ghost elsewhere. With that threat out of the way, Roenaldo continued forward onto a ramp that led to a grate path. As he was travelling, a Splat Bomb was ejected from an unknown area towards him, forcing him to step back to avoid the blast. He could not even catch his breath for a second before another bomb was launched behind him, and he was not able to avoid this one so easily. He winced as the corrosive ink wore away at his back, but not before many more Splat Bombs were sent his way. Having enough of this, Roenaldo turned into a squid and slipped through the grate, allowing him to avoid the many explosions. "Geez," he groaned, "Where are all of these bombs coming from?" He walked under the grate to the other side, finding only a lake of purple ink. Having a sense of what this meant, he covered the area with his yellow ink, exposing 3 Octolings wearing the same gear as the last one. Roenaldo wasted no time in taking care of the threats, as we wanted no more to do with their bomb-based tactics.

"Outstanding," said Cuttlefish, "That should be all of them. All you've got to do now is grab that Zapfish. Full speed ahead!" Roenaldo smiled and ran as fast as he could towards the glowing spot in the center, knowing that nothing was standing in his way. This was the case until Roenaldo noticed a shocking development happening on the other side of the map: the Octolings were also using a respawn point!" "Cripes," he said, "This isn't good. I guess there's no point in splatting these girls. But I'm so close to the Zapfish...you know what, forget it. I'm just going to grab it and leave." With that, Roenaldo inked a path so that he could swim at maximum speed, using a ramp to reach the Zapfish. After breaking the fish free, he hastily grabbed it, trying to ignore the shock that he got. Roenaldo looked behind him at the advancing Octolings as Cuttlefish said, "Good show, Agent 3, we've got what we came for. As I always say, the best battles are ones where you don't have to fight at all! In fact, I remember this one time at Pufferfish Peak..." "Captain," yelled Roenaldo, "Now's not the time!" Cuttlefish chuckled slightly, responding, "Oh yes, my mistake. Okay, try to imagine your base as a place in your 'mind map' so to speak. Once you've got it pictured, Super Jump over there!" With the Octolings now close by, Roenaldo quickly attempted to do as Cuttlefish said, trying his best to stay calm despite all the events that were happening. Just before a purple bullet could hit him, he transitioned to his squid form and jumped toward his base, with the Zapfish clinging on to his tentacles. Because this was his first time performing such a technique, he instead crashed straight into a potted plant. As Roenaldo shook off the dirt, the captain chuckled, "That's not the best jumping that I've ever seen, but at least you've got your greens. Anyway, just try and get back into that flying machine." Fortunately for him, all Roenaldo had to do was stand beneath the UFO, and it used its traction beam to pull him back to the cockpit. From there, he once again slid his hand over the buttons to fumble his way back to the saloon, where the Squidbeak drone transported him back to Octo Valley.
