Chapter 18 - Chapter 17: The Return to the Valley

"Hmph," grunted the old squid, "Took you long enough. Where were you yesterday, Agent 3?" Roenaldo put on his Hero Suit, explaining, "I'm sorry, captain, I just forgot to come. You see, I was busy doing Ranked Battles." The squid scratched his beard, responding, "Ranked Battles? What the heck are those? Are there other Octarians you're fighting that I don't know about?!" Roenaldo shook his head, replying, "No, not at all! Ranked Battles are bouts that people in Inkopolis participate in. They're like Turf Wars, but you have to do a certain objective." The captain gasped in shock, exclaiming, "Turf War?! Are you telling me that another one has already started?! Come on, Agent 3, what're you waiting for? We must join the fight!" Cuttlefish grabbed his cane and ran forward, prompting Roenaldo to interject, "Wait, it's not that kind of Turf War! The ones I'm talking about are just friendly matches between Inklings where we paint as much of the ground as we can with our ink." Cap'n Cuttlefish looked at Roenaldo with a surprised expression, saying, "By gum! So you kids are really making a game out of the greatest war in Inkling history? My cod, this generation is completely looney..." Roenaldo chuckled, responding, "Yeah, you may have a point. But the battles sure are fun!" The elder returned to his seat, stating, "Hmm, if you say so. Well, at least you still came here in the end. It's more than I can say of most kids these days..." The captain pointed his cane to the left, continuing, "Anyhow, now that you've finally arrived, how's about you go ahead and nab some more zapfish?" Roenaldo nodded, responding, "Aye aye, captain." With that, the agent used the launch pads on the 1st 2 sections to travel to the third one, where he once again used the spray and pray technique to locate a kettle on a distant metal platform. He then dove inside, starting his first mission of the day.

Roenaldo landed in an area with fluffy clouds, frothing waves, and bright sunshine. "Wow," he said, "Did the Octarians really manage to pack a whole summer setting underground? How cool! Well, looks like my time here will be very...wait a second..." He looked closer at the objects around him, noticing that the clouds had staticky lines covering them, the waves were awfully flat-looking, and the sunlight was less warm than usual. It was then that Roenaldo knew the summery scene was but an electronic illusion. He sighed, thinking, Wow, so these Octarians are so desperate for some enjoyment that they resort to creating this whole display. Gosh, I'm starting to feel bad for these people... He shook his head in regret; although he felt guilty doing it, he knew that he had to continue breaking into these lairs to take back the zapfish lest he allow his people to face an Octarian uprising. With this unfortunate fact in mind, he marched forward to meet the beginning of an Inkrail. "Oho," said the captain, "Looks like you have another one of these long Inkrail trips ahead of you, boyo." Roenaldo activated the base of the rail with his yellow ink, diving into the line that ejected from it to travel forwards. He looked down and gulped, seeing that, unlike the artificial waves found all around the area, the water below was as real and deadly as ever. Aiming to avoid being dissolved, Roenaldo clung to the ink rope like a barnacle until he came to a roadblock: a large block of compact sand. "Gadzooks," exclaimed the captain, "You're trapped! How are we going to get out of this pickle?" Roenaldo looked up, saying, "Well, I do see another Inkrail up there, but I don't know if I can reach it." The captain responded, "Oh, well that's no problem, then! Listen up, boyo, I'm about to tell you an old technique that I learned in military school: the Spring N' Fling! To do it, all you've got to do is jump into the air and quickly pull out one of your bombs. Use it to activate that rail so that you can dive into it." Roenaldo shuddered a little in his squid form, feeling uneasy about attempting such a risky move above the toxic water. Nonetheless, he pulled himself together enough to propel himself upwards. He swiftly reached for a Splat Bomb from his Hero Shot and hurled it at the base of the Inkrail. Fortunately, he managed to hit his mark, and he was able to ride the created line to a safe bit of land. "Bravo," said the captain, "You just did that on your first try! I suppose that now I can say that you're better than one of my mates, Shelly. I tell you; she couldn't hit the broad side of a flounder! I remember one time in target practice, she was using her trusty Splat Charger..." As the elder was going on another one of his spiels, Roenaldo noticed that the walls around him were suspiciously purple. Suddenly, 4 Twintacle Octotroopers popped out of said walls, their nozzles at the ready. Roenaldo swiftly dove into his ink to avoid the resulting onslaught before getting the octopi while they were reloading. As Roenaldo rested from his exertion, Cuttlefish appraised, "Quick on the draw as usual, Agent 3. You're reminding me more and more of myself by the minute!" Roenaldo smiled at his received approval before moving forward to find another Inkrail base.

Once he activated it, he was quite surprised to see that the generated rail went an extremely short distance. That being said, Roenaldo noticed that there lied ahead of him a series of Inkrail bases; it was apparent what he needed to do. "Hrm," said Roenaldo under his breath, "Looks like I'll have to use that 'Spring N' Fling' move the captain told me about. But wait, there's one problem: throwing Splat Bombs takes out a lot from my ink supply. Well then, how a, I supposed to get through without running dry?" He thought some more before coming to a conclusion: he had to make use of his Hero Shot. He would have to be careful, however, since his standard weapon was more precise than the larger Splat Bomb. So, he got right to work, beginning by swimming into the first ink line. Once he reached the end of it, he jumped into the air and took aim at the first base, making sure to hit his target before he fell in the water below. After successfully completing this goal, he swam along the created cord to the next base, where he executed the same action. He repeated the process repeatedly for the remaining 6 foundations, growing more and more confident in his skills as he jumped from line to line. He did a cool flip as he landed on another safe platform, saying proudly, "Nailed it!" The captain clapped over the headsets, saying, "Bravo again, my boy, bravo! You didn't even need my word to do what you just did. Good on you for being innovative!" After this was said, both squids started to hear static interfering with their conversation. After the jumble was finished, bits of a voice could be heard that said, "Gr — ha—a! T —u —are, Cut —! Now —revenge!" After that mess, the intruding voice suddenly left. "Wow," said Cuttlefish, "What was that all about? And what was that last part about revenge?" Roenaldo shrugged, answering, "Beats me. Maybe it's a glitch in these headphones? No offense, captain, but if this gear's been around for as long as you, it's bound to have some issues." The older squid responded, "Watch your mouth, bucko! That is...exactly right. To be honest, I was just waiting for something like this to happen. Well, I suppose that we can just ignore this little hiccup and move on." Roenaldo walked forward, responding, "Agreed."

Now, Roenaldo was in a big arena with several inactivated Inkrails among multiple small platforms. As Roenaldo ventured toward the site, he heard Cuttlefish exclaim, "Batten down the hatches! We've got an Octoling incoming!" As the elder had said, an Octoling Super Jumped to the center of the platform, giving Roenaldo a fierce glare. She then shot a nearby Inkrail and dove into it, using the line to travel in a square formation around her target. "By Jove," said the captain," they're using the Inkrails, too! Stay on your guard, Agent 3." Roenaldo warily looked around, attempting to sense the Octoling's movements. His foe soon jumped out of her hiding spot, letting loose a barrage of purple ink. As Roenaldo swam backwards, he said, "Hey! What're you doing stealing my moves like that? That's it, I'll show you who's better at doing what." With that, Roenaldo sought out an Inkrail of his own before engaging the Octoling in combat. He utilized the strategy of switching between defense and offense, doing his best to ensure that he dealt as much damage as possible while taking as little damage as possible. By doing this, he was able to get enough hits in on the Octoling to where she was splatted, dropping a computer chip while her spirit rose into the air. Roenaldo wiped his hands, saying, "That'll teach you to imitate me, alright." As he was saying that, a launch pad appeared, granting Roenaldo access to a Zapfish that was sitting on a miniature floating island. Funnily enough, the fish was wearing sunglasses while sitting back despite being trapped in a forcefield. Hoping that this meant the zapfish was docile, Roenaldo carefreely retrieved the captive battery. Unfortunately, he was mistaken, and the shock he received also shook a fake coconut free from the nearby tree. Roenaldo rubbed his head before riding the approaching drone back to the surface.
