Chapter 11 - Chapter 10: Spongy Steps

Roenaldo quickly exited the vehicle as soon as it rose up from the ground, placing the Zapfish next to the kettle to avoid taking another shock. Leaving the fish to get picked up later, Roenaldo made his way over to another area in the skate park, which was around a small tree in southeast area. There, he noticed something strange: when he walked over a patch of land, he started to get elevated despite nothing being visible. At that moment, he knew what this meant. He shot the spot beneath him with his Hero Shot, revealing, as expected, another kettle.

When he reached the bottom of this one, he noticed that the interior looked very uniform and green. Furthermore, most of the land was nonexistent, leaving Roenaldo with no obvious ways to progress. Or at least this was the case until he approached the edge of his starting platform and saw a scattered, floating arrangement of small sponges. "Oho," said the captain, "Sponges! Shoot them with your ink to make them grow. That'll make crossing this chasm a breeze!" Roenaldo set his sights on the nearest sponge and let loose a barrage of yellow fluid on it, causing it to become engorged. Jumping onto his new surface, Roenaldo saturated the rest of the sponges one after the other, eventually reaching a solid piece of levitating land. Waiting for him there was a squadron of Octoballs and Octopods that gave Roenaldo very little time to react before launching themselves at him. Ever the quick thinker, Roenaldo first shot the Octopods before they could detonate, and then he painted the ground beneath the Octoballs to immobilize them. By doing this, he made it out of the ambush with no injuries. "Way to stay on your toes, Agent 3," praised the captain, "You can bet my bottom dollar that those octojerks are going to try and get the jump on you again. Don't give them that chance!"

With this advice in mind, Roenaldo pressed on through the next series of suspended absorbents, taking care not to fall into the abyss below. All was going well until Roenaldo heard the familiar sound of propellers whirring. "Oh great," he said, "More of these annoying Octocopters." The 3 bogies flew in from the front, their ink blasters at the ready. All at once, they fired globs of purple at Roenaldo's position, and he tried his best to avoid all the attacks. Although he was able to avoid getting shot, something far worse happened: the sponge shrunk. With his sense of balance suddenly thrown out of whack, Roenaldo flailed his arms as he stood precariously on one foot, attempting to steady his aim on the sponge below him. This effort proved to be fruitless, and he found himself free-falling into the deep pit. At such a height, not even his boneless anatomy could save him, and he landed on the ground with a wet splat.

As Roenaldo was reforming at the spawn point, Cuttlefish said, "Looks like it's time for another one of my battlefield rules! Whenever you're in enemy territory, there's no shame in being a little sneaky." As Roenaldo swam back to the point where he had fallen, a plan started to form in his mind. "Be sneaky, he says? Well," he thought, "I'll try." Once he reached the area with the three Octocopters, Roenaldo observed that the octopi were not interested in taking their attention off of the sponges. It was going to be near impossible to enlarge the pad without alerting the octopi to his location. He knocked his fist to his temple to think of a solution, thinking back to his previous missions. Remembering his encounter with a Shielded Octotrooper, an idea popped into Roenaldo's head. Grabbing a Splat Bomb from his Hero Shot, Roenaldo threw the explosive to the right of the Octarian fleet. The flying fiends followed the arch of the bomb, giving Roenaldo enough time to ink the sponges and move past the Octocopters undetected. "Marvelous work, Agent 3," exclaimed the captain, "Way to use your noggin. Keep that performance up and we'll be done with this mission in a jiffy!"

Encouraged by his elder's words, Roenaldo continued on through a long, tin metal corridor, on the lookout for any enemies. From a puddle of purple arose an Octostamp that wasted no time in slamming Roenaldo. To avoid getting squished, Roenaldo transformed into a squid and darted under the heavy foe. With his hearts beating rapidly, he quickly dispatched the sudden stamp. "Gosh," he said, "I didn't know that Octostamps could hide in ink like that." This encounter was not the only one; Roenaldo had to deal with many more sneaking sea creatures on his way through the passageway. He breathed a sigh of relief when he finally reached a launch pad. Using the resource, Roenaldo Super Jumped to another island, where the gaps between solid pieces of ground were farther than ever before. Roenaldo took a deep breath before activating the nearby checkpoint and proceeding forward. Getting a closer look at the scene in front of him, Roenaldo noticed that some of the sponges were already engorged, albeit with purple ink. Keeping a wary eye on such sponges, Roenaldo filled an empty sponge with his bodily fluids and jumped onto it. This drew the attention of a Twintacle Octotrooper that was hiding in one of the purple sponges. It emerged from the ink with its snorkels on and opened fire on its enemy. Roenaldo, however, was not about to die this way again, and he shot the sponge below him as fast as the trooper could shoot. While the octopus was reloading, Roenaldo took the opportunity to light it up. Afterwards, he looked ahead of him and sighed, knowing that he had quite the distance to go. Not wanting to stop now, Roenaldo made a series of jumps across the next few sponges, keeping his cool while shooting the small objects.

The next obstacle that he had to face came in the form of two enemy sponges, each one having a shielded Octotrooper on it. Roenaldo prepared to grab a Splat Bomb, but was displeased when one of the Octotroopers threw of his balance with the shrinkage of his sponge. "Darn," Roenaldo thought, "These Octarians aren't giving me a chance to distract them. How else am I supposed to deal with them? Oh, wait a second, I'm dumb!" Roenaldo quickly aimed his gun at the sponge that one of the Octotroopers were standing on. With part of its machine teetering over the shrunken edge, the Octarian pilot let out a burbling cry as it fell backwards into the abyss. Roenaldo spun around and did the same to the other Octotrooper before it could send him to his death. With that out of the way, Roenaldo could make out the faint glow of a Zapfish in the distance; victory was within his grasp. With determined leaps he travelled across the spongy path, not even as concerned by the enemies at this point. At the speed that he was going, the purple ink being flung at him from the ambush points missed him completely. Once he reached the end of the absorbent path, the only thing standing in his way was a large wall. "Okay, Agent 3," said Cuttlefish, "You know what time it is. CHARGE!" With the Octarians still firing at him, Roenaldo inked the surface in front of him, aiming as high as he could. Unfortunately for him, this line only extended halfway up the wall. With no other option, Roenaldo dived into the ink and swam upwards as fast as he could, evading the ink blasts along the way. When he inevitably reached the end of the liquid, he went to his last resort: by rapidly alternating between his squid and kid form, he was able to ink a little bit ahead of him before diving back into the wall. Using this strategy, Roenaldo made it to the Zapfish, managing to only take 2 shots to the back. "By my beard," said the captain, "I can't believe my eyes. The only time that I've seen moves like that were in my glory days! You're truly agent material, skipper." Although satisfied to hear these words of approval, Roenaldo's happiness was cut short when he was zapped by the captive Zapfish.

Taking the transportation vehicle back to the surface, Roenaldo went on to retrieve 2 more Zapfish from the Octarian kettles. After he was done with that, he noticed that the sky was once again turning dark, so he decided to turn in his Hero Gear for the day and head back to Inkopolis Plaza for some shut-eye. Visiting his favorite restaurant for an anchovy sandwich, Roenaldo took his purchase to his house. As he was eating, he thought to himself, "You know, maybe I shouldn't be wasting my money so much going to restaurants. It's about time that I cooked my own food. I hear that fast food is bad for you, anyhow." With that thought in mind, Roenaldo wiped his face off before jumping into bed.
