Chapter 10 - Chapter 9: Getting Back To Business

Roenaldo emerged through the manhole and was greeted by Cap'n Cuttlefish, who was wide awake and ready. "Ahoy there," he said, "I've been waiting to tell you something! Do you recall collecting all of those power eggs from those Octarians and crates? Well, I've just discovered that those eggs can be used to enhance your weapon! All ya have to do is use this handy doodad I have here." The senior went to his cabin and retrieved a small, rusty, portable machine. He handed it to Roenaldo, stating, "Take a look at that beauty. I call it the Cuttlefish Converter! It was very important to my crew and I while we were stuck deep in hostile territory. I tell you, in that moment I felt as though our splatoon was at the end of the road. We had but a scrap of resources to our name, and I had begun to wonder, 'Why have I decided to follow through with this plan?' That is when I realized that this mission was going to change the course of events for ye-" Noticing that the captain was rambling, Roenaldo interrupted, "Uh, Cap'n, weren't you going to tell me about what this Cuttlefish Converter does?" The elder shook his head, saying, "Oh yes, my mistake. As I was saying, this Cuttlefish can turn any power source, such as power eggs, into usable energy for weapons like the Hero Shot. Go on, try and place some power eggs into that thing!" So Roenaldo took a handful of the power eggs and fed it into a small receiver at the top of the machine. This caused the device to shudder and spurt, which made Roenaldo cringe slightly. Despite the machine's apparent, worn-down state, it still produced a tiny, yellow pellet. "Oho," exclaimed the captain, "Looks like my contraption still works after all. Now what I want you to do is find a compartment on the handle of your Hero Shot; there should be a tiny hole to put that pellet into." Roenaldo inspected his gun closer, finding that there was, in fact, a small hatch on the handle of his gun. He used the tip of his index finger to open it and then placed the yellow pellet inside. "Very good," said Cuttlefish, "Now your Hero Shot should have more firepower! It's a good thing too; the Octarians in the next area are not likely to be playing around." Roenaldo aimed at the ground with his weapon, testing to see if the captain's words were true. As was claimed, the Hero Shot output a larger volume of ink than it had previously. Roenaldo then headed towards the launch pad leading to the next area, saying, "Alright then, let's see what they have in store for us!"

After Super Jumping with the launch pad, Roenaldo began his usual routine of spraying yellow ink everywhere so that he could find his first kettle. Spying a suspicious-looking pillar in the distance, Roenaldo swam towards it and shot its sides before ascending the tower. Sure enough, he uncovered a silver kettle that was placed at the top. With a squish and a whistle, Roenaldo was sent down into yet another Octarian lair. Here, the area was reminiscent of a campsite, much like how Camp Triggerfish was. "Wow," thought Roenaldo, "What's with these Octarians and their theming? One day it's mechanical and bland, the other day it's rustic and natural! I guess that they just like a little variety in their lives." He went forward to see nothing but a lone valve between a set of tribal torches. "Oho," said the captain through the headsets, "That's a gusher! Try shooting the top of it with your ink and see what happens!" Roenaldo fired at the red handle of the valve, causing a thick pillar of yellow ink to erupt from the ground. "Thar she blows," exclaimed the captain, "Now dive on in and rise!" So Roenaldo morphed into his squid form and rode the torrent, feeling his body rise up to a great height. Although the ink geyser had stopped just below a net, Roenaldo's inertia made him slip through the net and crash into a wooden ceiling. "Hey," said the captain, "Are you okay there, bucko?" Transitioning back to his humanoid form and holding his head, Roenaldo replied, "Yep, couldn't be better. I definitely didn't get any sort of concussion from that." Cuttlefish responded, "Good, cause you've got trouble at 12:00!" Roenaldo looked around until he saw a small, cubic machine between 2 Octotroopers. Roenaldo smirked, remarking, "What is this, the Octostomp's son?" The captain responded, "I suppose that you could say that. Those are Octostamps, and they're going to try and flatten you just like that Octoweapon." With this in mind, Roenaldo advanced on the octopus trio, and the Octostamp leaped up into the air and crashed down in Roenaldo's direction with its ink covered face. Roenaldo stepped to the side before eliminating the two Octotroopers. As he was doing that, he noticed that there was a red, jiggling sucker on the back of the Octostamp, whose face was stuck in the ground. Before Roenaldo could shoot it, the Octostamp got back on its feet and attempted another body slam. Once again, Roenaldo avoided this assault, making sure to shoot the back of the Octarian this time. Once the Octostamp was splatted, it dropped a computer chip, activating a yellow launch pad. "Good inking, bucko," said the captain as Roenaldo Super Jumped to the next section, "Keep it up!"

Roenaldo landed at a checkpoint placed at the start of a long, suspended series of wooden platforms. Found throughout the area were gushers that had nets above them. At the end of the platforms was a metal, locked vault. "Hmm," said Cuttlefish, "Looks like these octojerks are hiding a key somewhere. Use the gushers to find it!" Roenaldo did as the captain said, first heading towards the gusher to the left of him. He activated it and rode it to the top, this time being sure to swim the other direction to lower his speed. Once he reached the net, he was met by a waiting Twintacle Octotrooper, who aimed its nozzle at the squid. Without a second to waste, Roenaldo sprayed the octopus into oblivion with his powerful Hero Shot. Although he won the fight, he took massive damage from his foe. "Those blasted Octarians," muttered the captain, "They would be the ones to use tactics like this. You should dive into your ink to rest up." So Roenaldo laid down some yellow ink on the plank in front of him and dove into it, staying still to alleviate the pain that he felt. As Roenaldo was relaxing, Cuttlefish said, "You know, there's a lesson to be learned from this: Always expect the unexpected. It's a rule of the battlefield!" After allowing the ink to soak into his body, Roenaldo was back to his healthy state. He then looked at the area behind the Twintacle Octotrooper's inky remains, seeing that there was a stack of boxes. He blasted all of them, and one of the boxes revealed a protective helmet. "Oho," exclaimed Cuttlefish, "You may not have found a key, but at least now you're prepared for any funny business."

With this newfound security, Roenaldo slipped through the holes of the net and went to a gusher that was near an Octarian flag. Taking the captain's advice to heart, Roenaldo kept his mind ready for any surprise attacks as he was launched through another net. Sure enough, he was met by a lone Octostamp, who crouched in preparation for an attack. It faced straight in Roenaldo's direction and lunged face-first at him, aiming to crush him against the wooden wall behind him. Roenaldo faced with this immediate danger, did the first thing that came to mind. He jumped as high as he could, spreading his legs apart as he did so. This quick action prevented the Octostamp from hitting its mark, and Roenaldo promptly shot it in the back before it could recover. He could hear clapping through the headsets as the captain exclaimed, "Marvelous moves, Agent 3! Why, you remind me of myself during the Siege of Arowana Peak. Looks like you've found some more boxes too!" Roenaldo, satisfied by the elder's praise, proceeded to break the boxes on the platform, revealing a bunch of power eggs. "Still no key, eh? Well," said Cuttlefish, "Third time's the charm, as they say. Try riding that last gusher." So Roenaldo passed through the net and made his way toward the final gusher, which was situated in the middle of a pile of fishing equipment.

Roenaldo activated the ink technology and rode it upwards only to find…nothing. He looked around confused as he stood on the bristly rope net, wondering why the area was so quiet. The only thing there was a large stack of boxes. Mistakenly believing that the coast was clear, Roenaldo shot the boxes with his Hero Shot, hoping to find a key. He did end up finding what he was looking for—but not before taking an Octopod explosion straight to the head! Not considering the fact that Octarians could hide inside crates, Roenaldo had no choice but to let his only piece of armor get destroyed as it activated its defense mechanism. He looked down in shame as he sullenly said, "I'm sorry, Cap'n Cuttlefish. I didn't apply your rule of the battlefield." The captain responded, "Ah, don't worry your head about it. We all make mistakes like that from time to time. The important thing is for you to learn from them! That's another one of my rules for ya." Roenaldo nodded, replying, "Well said, Cap'n. Hopefully this key will lead us to something good." With the key in hand, Roenaldo jumped down and unlocked the vault, revealing the final launch pad.

After using it, Roenaldo landed on another checkpoint and found himself in a circular arena filled with a bunch of gushers. After a brief period of silence, he could hear the familiar, loud sound of helicopter blades whirring; Octobombers were coming in hot! All 5 of them flew in from the right, their eyes set on Roenaldo. One by one, they launched their Splat Bombs at the squid, who retreated to the left. Sensing this movement, one of the Octobombers aimed his explosive behind Roenaldo, causing the gusher in that spot to erupt purple ink. Hearing the sound of rushing liquids, Roenaldo immediately halted, looking with shock at what that Octarian had done. The captain exclaimed, "Clattering clams! These octojerks can use gushers too! Quickly, Agent 3, engage evasive maneuvers!" So Roenaldo swiftly ran to the center of the area, avoiding the rising columns of ink that were emerging all around him. Now tired of the constant explosions going on, Roenaldo attempted to shoot down one of the flying octopi. Unfortunately, they simply flew just out of reach of Roenaldo's range, and they made a cruel, burbling laugh. "Oh, sink me," muttered Cuttlefish, "These Octobombers are going to be a pain in the port bow. Curse you flying fiends!" As Roenaldo was dodging the constant volley of bombs, he started to think, "Okay, do these Octobombers not want to come down? Fine, I'll just come up to them!" So he stood on a gusher and shot it before another bomb could reach him. The Octobombers were shocked as Roenaldo reached their level, and they flew away from him in a panic, their weight preventing them from ascending any higher. Roenaldo managed to drop one of the fleeing octopi, who dropped a canned special with the logo of 3 Splat Bombs on it. The other Octobombers looked with dread as Roenaldo cracked open the canister, revealing a bunch of shell-less clams.

Anticipating something good to come from this food, Roenaldo scarfed it down, causing him to feel an immediate sense of power. His tentacles started to glow a fierce yellow as he started to feel a strange feeling in his hands. His ink tank started working itself to the max, causing yellow ink to overflow from pores in his palm. "Oho," exclaimed the captain, "That be the Bomb Rush! Now, Agent 3, shape the ink in your hand and throw it at the enemy!" His head buzzing with extreme stimulation, Roenaldo formed a cup-shape with his right hand, watching as a mass of ink formed itself into a shape similar to a Splat Bomb. He then hurled the semi-liquid below one of the Octobombers, activating the gusher beneath it to splat it instantly. Roenaldo excitedly hurled ink bombs at the rest of the octopi, shouting, "Who's the one getting blown up now?!Who's the one getting harassed by gushers now?! That's right, it's ya'll! Eat my ink!" After that outburst, all of the Octobombers were wiped off the map, and the Bomb Rush effect had run out. Furthermore, one of the Octobombers had dropped another computer chip, which caused one final gusher to emerge from the center of the arena. Lumiose activated it, him to rise up to the location where the Zapfish was held: on a platform suspended by a giant weather balloon. Prepared for the worst, Roenaldo released the Zapfish and took hold of it with his muscles braced. As he faced the inevitable shock, the captain said, "That's another Zapfish in the bag!" The transportation device then came to retrieve the pained Roenaldo and his prize.
