After surprising their two seniors, the rest of the dinner continued with them informing the pair about just what kind of special existences they were.
Most beastmen were only able to use aura while the few that could use magic were usually low-tier mages. The fact that the two that had arrived were one of the legendary sages and a high-tier mage would attract the envy of many students, especially the nobles from the Empire and the elves.
"You two need to be careful. The seniors will be less likely to care about you being beastmen and respect your ranks more but you need to be wary of a few of them.
The 4th prince of the empire is a 3rd year and White Magic user who is known to look down on other races, especially those that are talented. He has taunted quite a few into attacking him so he could break them.
Then there is also Alanis Wynwenys who is a 2nd year from the Green Magic school. She's an elf with a hatred for beastmen so she may try to start issues with the two of you as well if you cross her pass. Luckily, she isn't the type to go out of her way to fight others unless they cross her bottom line.
Besides them, lots of 1st years from different schools with challenge you both to prove themselves but..." Sally trailed off while looking at the pair, "You two shouldn't have much to worry about that. Until they learn magic, I'm pretty sure you guys can beat up anyone."
Wyne and Mil were giving several more warnings while walking back to the dorms. On the way, they saw a large number of students with pale faces.
"And that's why you guys need kind seniors like us," Liz bragged even though she didn't bring them to the cafeteria. "Otherwise, you would starve like them."
The groups parted ways on the 3rd floor of the dorm. While Mil and Wyne had rooms on the third floor, they were stationed on the 5th floor of the tower.
When Wyne got back to his room, he was ready to pass out. After taking off his uniform, he jumped in the air before transforming into a small, grey fox and landing on his pillow.
'This pillow is actually pretty comfy,' were Wyne's last thoughts before falling asleep.
---
The next morning, Wyne was up before dawn. His little fox mouth let out a yawn before he stood on all fours and stretched his body a few times. He then went into the bathroom and shifted into his beastman form before getting in the shower and washing himself off. After a quick wash and putting on his uniform, Wyne was on his way to the mission board.
Along the way, he met with several senior students who were also heading there. Some were flying or walking in the air, some were were-beasts running along, and some were riding various creatures. Wyne even saw someone teleporting. Very few were actually walking without using some form of magic.
The mission building was divided into 3 floors, one for each grade. When he arrived at the boards on the first floor, Wyne was the only 1st year there.
The boards were divided into 6 categories. There were missions for the 5 schools and missions that were open to any school. Wyne looked over the general missions since the ones for all of the individual schools were empty.
'Guess that's cause we can't use any magic yet. They will probably start putting ones up for those next week. Which means this week will be chaos with everyone competing for these,' Wyne lamented. He didn't feel like fighting over missions so he was planning to accept as many as he could and just deal with them throughout the week. Most of the missions had a deadline of 7 days after accepting them.
Wyne walked up to the counter where a young woman wearing a uniform from the School of Blue Magic was sitting.
"Hey," Wyne greeted her. "A senior suggested that I take some missions today so I don't starve later. I was wondering if I could get some more information about the missions."
The girl looked him over, more specifically the ears on his head as they twitched. It was only when Wyne coughed that she recovered.
"Um, sure. As you saw, the only missions currently available are the general missions since you guys don't know any spells. They will start posting those next month," she told Wyne.
'Shit!' he complained internally. 'That means this place will be hectic for a while.'
"To choose a mission, you just have to give me the mission ID number and I will register you for it. You can choose as many as you want but you will pay the penalty if you don't complete some."
"Gotcha. Is there any map that shows where I can find certain creatures and plants?" he asked, hoping the school wasn't so heartless as to make them find everything out on their own.
The girl was surprised that he asked. Most students would just go out and start looking for their targets without thinking about asking.
"Yep," she responded before bending down and pulling out a small book and piece of paper for him. "This book contains information on the various species and where they can be found while this map shows every area and their recommending level. They are updated by senior students weekly so they should be accurate. Make sure you come back once a week to get the latest version," she kindly advised. Since Wyne seemed smart, she didn't mind giving him some extra advice.
"Thanks," Wyne picked up the two documents before walking over to a table and reading over the map.
The map was pretty much what he had expected. The closest areas to the school were the safest while the farthest were the most dangerous. There were a few special areas where the danger level didn't match the surrounding areas but those were rare. There were also several biomes apparently.
'They have a desert and tundra out there? Oh, there's also a magma cave too. Those should be fun to explore when I learn mid-tier magic. Luckily, these areas are numbered too. Guess that means the book has where the beasts are located.'
Wyne then opened the book and went to a few random pages. He was correct in his guess. The book not only listed how powerful the creatures were and where they were located, but it also explained what type of magic they were weak against as well as their abilities.
Wyne brought the book and map over to the board before reading over the different missions. He was planning to take missions in the same area or at least areas that were close to each other.
'Let's see. These guys are all in the 6th sector so I should take them. Monkey and ape types are pretty easy to hunt with a bow.
The Frost Deers in the 7th sector are also not too bad to hunt. And if we get these 4 missions from the 8th sector, that would make us rich enough to last through us for the entire month with a safety net,' he made sure to pick these sectors since they were on the edge and the academy which most students wouldn't want to travel to. He wanted to avoid competing for points if he could.
'We will also rank in the top two for any combat classes so that's another 760 for us. That would net us nearly 19 hundred points each. Though I'm not sure what our other class ranks will be, I'm sure we won't fall out the top 10. That would average us 380 at the end of the month per class.
If what Liz and Sally said is true, we can bet on a few matches from other students challenging us. We can also skip out on paying for meals if we just hunt for food.'
Wyne was calculating not only what creatures they were capable of taking down but also their finances for the month. He wanted to get all of the missions out of the way so he could relax for the rest of the month and focus on his studies.
"If we find a beast or plant that has a mission for it but we haven't accepted it, can we still bring it back and get the points for it?" Wyne walked back to the counter and asked since he saw several beasts that were harder to get or rare plants in the sectors he chose but he didn't want to accept missions if he couldn't guarantee it.
"Of course. As long as the mission has yet to be completed, you can still get the reward for the mission if you bring the creature or plant back."
"Perfect," Wyne was glad he wouldn't be wasting his time by hunting extra creatures or bringing back plants he had no need for. "Then these are the missions I want."
The girl was surprised as Wyne listed off 15 missions but she accepted nonetheless. Since Nick was able to get some advice from some other seniors and was even smart enough to ask for information before just rushing off to do missions, she figured he must have been confident in his strength.
She then took Wyne's badge from him before using some magic on it and passing it back. Wyne looked at the back of his badge and saw the numbers for the various missions he had accepted on it.
"That is your confirmation that you have accepted these missions. Please sign here if it is all correct," the girl passed him a piece of paper and a pen so he could confirm himself. After reading over the numbers another time to double-check, he signed his name on the paper.
"Thank you. I wish you luck on your missions," she told him before Wyne walked out of the building and headed to the cafeteria.
