Chapter 2 - Chapter Two: Leaving Home

So some words were exchanged between me and my mom cause I totally expected her to take my side but of course I was disappointed once more. After my whining and complaining, I finally gave in and my mom said, of all things she could have said,

"Go apologize to him, I can't have you guys fighting on your last day here."

I definitely wasn't going down without a fight so I said,

"It's not my last day, I'll still visit you guys during the holidays and plus school will be over in two or three years."

"Please." My mom said with a pleading look in her eyes that just made me feel bad.

I mean, why do moms just have to be peacemakers all the time?

"Fine." I said defeated.

"Thank you."

I walked towards the stairs to go up to my brother's room to apologize but before I went on the first step I looked back and said

"I'm sorry for all the trouble we caused you mom."

"It's alright."

I went up to my brother's room and found the door slightly open and when I looked through the door, I saw my brother lying face down on the bed doing what I assume was crying. I knocked on the door and he sat up quickly wiping his face before saying,

"Come in."

I walked in and sat on the bed beside him. Turns out he was actually crying cause his eyes were damp and his voice was shaky.

"What do you want?" he asked, sulking.

"Mom sent me to apologize."

"Oh. Well you don't really have to apologize, you could just go back down and say you've apologized."

"Nah, that wouldn't feel right. But I'm actually sorry. I don't want there to be any bad blood between the two of us, especially since I'm leaving today."

"It's alright. I hate him too. But you're lucky, you have a great mom while both my parents are bitches. If I could I wouldn't have chosen to be born to him."

And now I felt bad again.

"I know, but you can consider my mom your mom too."

"Thanks bro."

"So are we okay now?" I said extending my hand for a fist bump.

"Yeah, we're okay." He said bumping my fist.

"Hunter, your ride's here!" I heard my mom yell from downstairs.

"Well, I gotta go now." I said standing up and heading to the door.

"Good luck, and see you next year." I heard Ryder say from his room.

I headed downstairs and saw my mom in the sitting room with a man who I assumed was my ride.

"Hunter, this is Ben, Mr. Ben to you and he's here to accompany you to the academy."

I inspected the man carefully. He seemed more like a business man than a driver. He had sleek black hair gelled back and a neatly trimmed beard. He wore a suit and tie with black office shoes and his voice was deep and soothing. Everything about him screamed elegance.

"Hey there boy. Are you ready? We have to leave as soon as possible."

"Yes sir. We may leave now."

I quickly went to my room to get my luggage and then we set off after of course some very awkward goodbyes from my mom. We got into a sleek black Rolls Royce and I couldn't help marveling at the inside of the car. It was one of the latest models and I wondered how the principal's car would look if the one used to pick up students was this nice.

The whole ride to the portal station I was buzzing with excitement. Every minute felt like an eternity of re-living the best moments of my life but of course, that got boring fast so I decided to strike up a conversation.

"Why did you dress up so much just to accompany a kid to the academy?"

"Huh, what are you going on about?"

"Well, I just thought no one would willingly dress up this much to pick up a kid."

"Oh, well these are my work clothes. I got bored at work so I decided to volunteer to pick up students as an excuse to get out of there."

"And what exactly is your job?" I asked feeling curious.

"I'm a teacher at the academy."

'What reason could a teacher at the academy possibly have to wanna leave?'

"How could a person possibly get bored teaching at THEEE academy?"

"The academy isn't as fun as you think it is. Especially for the teachers."

I didn't say anything after that cause I kept on wondering how a person could dislike the academy and if I would like it.

We got to the portal station a while later and as he paid for my ticket I couldn't help wanting to explore. You don't need to know what happened next but I got lost less than five minutes later. Don't blame me that place was huge. I kept on wandering around for a while and all of a sudden, I saw something coming at me so fast, it was a blur. Next thing I knew I was lifted off the ground and was zooming through the station.

'What the hell?!'

Soon I was placed in front of a portal and when I looked at the blur that was previously carrying me, it was Ben.

'If he could move that fast then why did we take a car?'

Next thing I knew he shoved the ticket in my hand and was off.

'Weird."

I showed the portal operator my ticket and was all smiles as someone led me to the portal leading to the academy.

The portal was huge and was a dull shade of grey. I expected it to be dull red since it led to a place full of superhumans.

'Well, this is it l, my dream is finally coming true. So why do I fell so sad?'

'Never mind that, it's finally time.'

I stepped into the portal and saw a blinding light. I closed my eyes out of instinct and tried raising my hands to cover my face but they felt wobbly. My knees felt like jello and I was getting a slight migraine. When my feet felt like they were touching the bare ground again, I opened my eyes but could hardly see cause my vision was blurry but when it cleared, I saw it. The biggest building I had ever seen in my life. The academy.
