Chapter 6 - Chapter six: Assessment

Clang, Clang, Clang

"Urgh, what the hell is that?" Hunter groaned as he got out of bed. The noise was coming from outside his dorm and as he opened his door to check, he found Chris doing something stupid as always.

'Why on earth would a person from the thirtieth century be banging two pots together?! What does he think this is, mediaeval times?'

"Chris." Ryan said coming out of his dorm.

"Yeah?"

"WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!!"

"Waking you up."

"Why?" Hunter asked, yawning as he rubbed his eyes.

"Coz, the early bird gets the worm."

"What are you talking ab..."

*Sigh*

"Forget it. So what do you want?"

"You guys have to prepare. Have any of you eaten since you got here?"

"No."

"Good. Food will just slow you down..."

"But you asked us to go to the cafeteria after settling in."

"Yeah, only because I wanted to test you and guess what, you passed. So have any of you trained?"

"No."

"Great, it's never good to overwork."

"What's your point?"

"I just want to make sure you're ready for the assessment."

Hunter glanced back into his room to check the time on his alarm clock and fumed.

"So, you woke me up to prepare for an assessment that's starts over two hours from now." He asked gritting his teeth.

"Yes, and it's a good thing that I did, sleeping before an activity can cause drowsiness."

"What is wrong with you?!"

"Absolutely nothing."

*Sigh*

"Is that all?"

"No. We have to go train."

"But you just said no training."

"Shh. Let's not dwell on the past and instead focus in the future."

"How is... you know what? Never mind."

"Fantastic. Onwards, to the training room." He led them to a large room around the size of two football fields put together filled with all kinds of machinery. The group only recognised a few of the machines as they were used in gyms back where they came from while the rest just looked weird. Surprisingly only two other people were in the room.

"You are free to go test out the machines." Chris said while heading towards a section of the room.

Hunter went over to a machine which had a training dummy for a body, on its stomach there was a green circle and a little above the circle was a screen that displayed 'punch here' with a downwards pointing arrow underneath. On the chest was another screen that displayed the numbers '00'.

On its head were the words 'Strength scale'.

'I did want to test out my new strength, I'll give it a try.'

He held his fist back and threw out a punch. The numbers on its chest started going up until they stopped at '23'.

'Is that really the best I could do? I'll just try again, harder and faster this time.' He moved his fist back and was about to punch it again when,

"Alright! That's enough training for today. Everyone regroup!" Chris's voice sounded throughout the room.

———

"Do you find pleasure in interrupting people?!" Ryan asked as they were once again walking through the school.

"Of course not, that's ridiculous." Chris said but they couldn't see the grin on his face since he was walking in front of them. "Anyways, we have less than thirty minutes until the assessment starts and we haven't done anything productive."

"I wonder whose fault that is." Damon mumbled to himself.

"Everyone go to your dorms to freshen up. After that meet me back in the training room."

"So you took us out of our dorms, into the training room, out of the training room to who knows where just to tell us to go back to our dorms and after meet back in the training room?!" Ryan asked visibly annoyed.

"Yea, is there a problem?"

"No, everything's fine. No one cares about how much you've wasted our time, we'll just think, 'Its Chris, no one can be mad at that guy.'!" Ryan said sarcastically.

"Thanks for the compliment but we don't have time for that, you guys go get ready." And with that, he was off.

"See, people like him are the reason I don't like people."

"He's not that bad, just a little weird." Chloe said as they made their way back to the dorms.

———

Just like Chris said, when they got to their rooms, there were three pairs of different uniforms.

One consisted of two pairs of black pants, a brown belt with a golden buckle in the shape of the school badge which a picture of a human and a beast holding up the world, two button up white long sleeved shirts, two black ties and two grey blazers with the school's badge embrioded on the left chest area of the blazer.

The second pair of uniforms consisted of a black tracksuit with three white stripes on each side going from the neck area down to the ankle and a white tracksuit with three black stripes on each side following the same pattern as those on the other tracksuit.

The third pair consisted of two pairs of black pants, two white inner shirts, two black jackets with a white trim on the sleeves and a pair of black gloves with a picture of a white human skull on it.

There were also six pairs of shoes, two of the pairs were totally black and had the look one would expect from a pair of work shoes, another two were totally white sneakers and the last two pairs were white sneakers with hints of black.

The group went into their rooms and freshened up while trying make use of the little time they had left to do some other stuff. Hunter and Damon both wore their black tracksuits while Chloe and Ryan wore the white ones. They met outside their dorms and headed to the training room to meet up with Chris.

"Where is that guy? We have like five minutes left and we can't afford to be late." Damon complained as they stood inside the training room by the door waiting for Chris.

"Let's just go, he clearly ditched us." Ryan said.

"No. We have to trust him, he's a good guy."

"If you say so. I'm leaving, you can all wait for 'the good guy' but I don't have time to waste." Ryan said leaving. "Peace."

"Wait for me." Chloe said running after him.

"I'm coming too." Hunter said.

Now, only Damon was left in the room.

"I'm sure he won't mind if we leave." Damon said before leaving.

———

"Made it in the nick of time." Damon said as they reached the large field where the assessments were to take place. They were just starting and halfway through the field was a large curtain held up by two drones at each side of the field. In front of it was a makeshift stage where a man was addressing the crowd of students.

"Welcome to the renowned hybrid academy. I assume all of you have already settled into your dorms and although I would like to hear your opinions on the rooms, the assessment comes first. Your ranks will be represented by colours which will be displayed in the screen of your watches but the ranks are still Rank A,B,C,D,E and F.

Remember, anyone who ranks less than the D rank will not be allowed to join the academy. Instead, you will be given the opportunity to train with your system for an extra year and can come back next year for your assessment.

Rank D and all the other ranks except rank A are divided into two, upper and lower." The man wasn't shouting or using a mic yet his voice was able to reach everyone.

"Now that we're done with the basics, let the assessments begin!" And with that, the curtain dropped.
