Chapter 11 - Unthinkable Stench

Lifting the shotgun and pointing it at the monster's head, I pulled the trigger. A loud bang was heard throughout the entire forest. What surprised me was that the monster was still alive; it had dodged the pellets. The ones that did land only landed on the body. Not affecting the monster at all.

With an annoyed tone "Can't you let a man savor his meal? Doing all this hard work just for your flesh to be less tender. You can't kill me anyway; without me closing the distance, you'll never be able to completely blow my head out."

The old man was now scared for his life; I could see it in his expression. He knew that if I didn't land these last two shots, then we'd all be dead. The next meal for them to feast on.

The monster then quickly moved towards me. I aimed the gun at its head again. Pulling the trigger, now what was left of it was just half of its head. I thought it would've died, but what happened shocked me. It was still standing; the only thing left of it now was its body and half of its upper head.

The monster moved its mouth, sighing in the process, "Who would know your aim was so good? You even blew my brains out, but too bad. Should've gone for the second shot." Its head started to form slowly, going back to as it was before.

It smiled with an unnaturally wide grin; it was also giggling happily like it was playing a game of hide and seek. "Hey, you want to kill me right?" Leaning its head towards me. Now the shotgun was point-blank towards the monster's regenerating head. "Kill me, do it. I won't move or budge an inch. Just pull the trigger. My head is still regenerating, so if you shoot me right now, I'll die."

"this sounds like a trick. Why would you let me kill you?"

In a sweet and gentle voice "Shh. You want me gone, don't you? I won't do anything; just come on and shoot the shotgun. If you don't hurry, I'll fully regenerate, and then I'll kill you."

It was now stroking my cheek very gently. Feeling the pressure, I pulled the trigger. The body dropped to the floor instantly. It was now... dead; how can it just kill itself?

Gramps was shaken to his cord. "W-why did it let you kill it? There's no way they never acted like that before."

Aqrim went towards the body and touched it. "It's not bleeding. Its head was completely shot off, but it isn't bleeding. And also... that smell."

The body was giving off a disgusting odor. The smell of dead rats, dogs, cats, and birds. It was so pungent that gramps even threw up on the floor.

Covering up my nose, "that is one disgusting smell; note taken: DO NOT kill them in a closed space."

"You know for someone saying that you are awfully calm right now." Said, gramps

"it's not my fault i was born this way; why'd you think i made a contract with a demon anyway?"

"You two need to shut up and throw that bastard outside; I cannot with this damn stench."

"then shut up and help me, you damn demon; don't let an old man do it."

Moving toward the body, I lifted up its legs. "aqrim, grab the other end." I grabbed the other end of the body. We both lifted it up, and now the smell got even worse. It was the stench of raw sewage mixed with rotten flesh and skunk spray.

"God, that is fucking horrible!"

"Stop complaining and throw it out the door, you two!"

"you give us time, gramps, this thing smells horrible!" I shouted

Quickly opening up the door and then throwing the body outside. The smell had dissipated a little, but there was still a lingering stench.

"that was one of the worst things that I've ever smelled." I said while pinching my nose.

"You tell me, maybe I should've killed one sooner."

"Wait, gramps, you never killed one before?"

"What do you think? I am an old man. What am I supposed to do, run? The only one that would protect me was my..." The old man's face went completely grim and sad. "It was my daughter."

If the mood was bad already, the grandpa made it worse. I couldn't really blame him though since it was just him and his daughter in this hellhole for a while ago.

Feeling sympathy for gramps, "don't worry, gramps, I can fully understand you." I couldn't, but I'll just play along.

"Stop lying to me. I know you don't; no one does." The grandpa's face darkened even more.

Ok, maybe I should shut up. Looking at Aqrim, he was just standing there; it looked like he was thinking about something, so I asked him.

"hey, what're you thinking about?"

"I'm trying to figure out what kind of thing this is."

"oh yeah, you did say that you were smart after all."

Then something dawned on me when I was opening the door; it was unlocked. Why didn't the thing just come in? Why did it wait? Now that's a question to remember because why would a creature smart enough to use technology not be able to open doors? Or is it weak to doors, surely not right?

"hey, gramps, can they not open doors? Because the door was unlocked all this time."

"Ah, yes, while I don't know why, when I got here we figured out that they can only come out at night and they can't open doors. They're smart, but not enough to open doors."

"Gramps, what you just said makes no sense at all. If they can use technology, then they can open up doors." The demon argued.

"I don't know what to tell you. I've been here for ten years, and they have never opened doors."

The demon has a point if they are smart enough to use a voice recorder, not to mention they got his daughter to say all those things. They have to be able to open up doors.
