Chapter 9 - Chapter 9

The journey from Catherine's house to Jerry's house lasted thirty minutes.

When they got to the mansion, Catherine couldn't help but admire how huge it was.

It was a three-story building constructed with glaziers, making it possible for those inside to see those outside without them noticing.

In addition to the security cameras that were placed at each corner of the mansion, it was also guarded by armed security guards who kept strolling around the mansion in order to assure its security.

The first and second-story buildings were occupied by Jerry's family and the maids, and the third was rented out to some tenants.

When Jerry drove inside the mansion, he noticed the discomfort in Catherine's face.

"Hey, is everything okay?" Jerry inquired.

"Yes," Catherine responded with a fake smile.

"Don't tell me you are afraid to see my parents," Jerry said teasingly, and Catherine faked a smile again.

"It's just that I'm afraid; what if your father discovers that we aren't really together?" Catherine inquired with a worried tone, and Jerry smiled.

"Well, Catherine, I don't know if you have ever been in a relationship or not, but if this is going to work, you just have to put it in your head that we are together. Just be natural and remove every thought that we aren't together from your head." Jerry explained this to Catherine reassuringly, and she nodded in agreement.

"Do you know why you should do that?" Jerry inquired.

"No," Catherine responded.

"Because everything happens right here," Jerry said to her while touching her forehead, and Catherine furrowed her brows at him.

"But if you want, I can help you calm your nerves," Jerry said to her.

"And how are you going to do that?" Catherine inquired.

"Well, science has proven that kissing helps calm down the nerves." Jerry replied while smiling.

"In your dreams, Mr. Professor," Catherine replied with a straight face, and immediately Jerry busted into a round of laughter.

"I'm just kidding. This is what you are going to do: try breathing in and out twice." Jerry said it to Catherine, and immediately she did it.

"So how do you feel now?" Jerry inquired.

"A little, much better," Catherine replied.

"Perfect, let's start going," Jerry said to her.

Once they came out of the car, Jerry held her hand, and they started heading towards the sitting room.

The whole dining room was filled with the aroma of the different meals that filled the dining table.

Jerry took his time to supervise the cooking of the meal before heading to Catherine's house because he wanted everything to look special.

Everyone was present in the dining room except for Daniel, who went out with some of his friends because, since he resumed his work at the company, he didn't have much time to go to the club with his friends except for the weekends.

After saying a little prayer, everyone started eating their meal silently.

As they were eating, Catherine couldn't help but notice the uncomfortable gaze of Jerry's stepmother; she kept on eyeing her every time that their gazes met.

"So Catherine, you work for the same company as Jerry, right?" Cynthia asked Catherine while munching her meal.

"Yes, I'm the marketing manager of the company," Catherine replied while smiling, and Cynthia nodded without saying a word and continued eating her meal.

"So, Catherine, can you tell me a little about yourself?" Mr. Bernard said this to Catherine while eating his meal, and immediately Catherine nodded her head in agreement.

"I was raised by my mom; my dad passed away when I was still in college, so my mom was the one who sponsored my education until I graduated from the university." Catherine said this to Mr. Bernard, who nodded in agreement.

"So what motivated you to become a marketing director?" Mr. Bernard inquired.

"Well, since I was a kid, I have always liked advertising; it was my passion, and secondly, I wanted to make my mother proud because I saw how hard she fought to take care of me," Catherine replied, and Mr.Bernard nodded in agreement while smiling.

"What does she do for a living?" Mr. Bernard inquired while sipping the orange juice in his glass cup.

"Well, she was working as an accountant, but she had to retire because of some health issues. Actually, she rented a boutique where she sells some provisions." Catherine explained.

"Wow, she's really a strong woman," Mr. Bernard complimented. "I hope you are strong like her too." Mr. Bernard asked Catherine while smiling, and she nodded while smiling too.

Immediately after that, a silent atmosphere engulfed the sitting room, and everyone concentrated on their meal once again.

"So Catherine, do you think falling in love with your boss is going to give a good image to the company?" Cynthia asked without looking at Catherine, and immediately everyone turned their gaze towards her in surprise. "I mean, it hasn't been up to five months since you started working for the company, and already you are in love with your boss," Cynthia affirmed without minding the angry gaze of Jerry and her husband.

With that statement, Catherine lost her appetite immediately; she couldn't swallow the food in her mouth anymore because it seemed as if there were thorns in her mouth.

She wished that the earth would open up and swallow her up, but it wasn't going to happen. She regretted ever following Jerry to his house.

"Mum, for Christ's sake, where is this question coming from?" Jerry asked his stepmother angrily.

"Jerry, will you shut up?" Cynthia barked angrily. "I know women like her; they pretend to be angels, but in reality they are nothing but wolves in sheep's clothing, gold diggers always looking for someone to victimize. And once they are done sulking, they will dump you." Cynthia said it angrily.

"Will you shut up, Cynthia?" Mr. Bernard barked angrily while banging the table with his palms.

"How rich were you before I got married to you? Didn't you come from a low background, or will you deny the fact that you got married to me because of my wealth?" Mr. Bernard barked angrily.

Catherine blamed herself for everything that was going on, and before she could realize it, tears started streaming down her face.

"I will take my leave now," Catherine said, tears streaming down her face. "And sorry for invading your privacy; I shouldn't have come in the first place.

With that statement, Catherine started heading outside, ignoring Jerry's calls.

Once Jerry came out, he saw her entering a taxi. Before he could run towards the taxi, it had already zoomed off.

Without hesitating, he ran back into the house and took his car keys. As he was about to leave, his dad asked him where he was running, but without replying to any of them, he dashed out of the house and started heading towards the garage.

Once he came out with the car, he zoomed off with immediate speed.
