Chapter 15 - Chapter 15

Jerry, Daniel, and his mother have been in the hospital for more than three hours. After what seemed like forever, the doctor and his colleagues came out of the ICU room.

The doctor was possibly in his late 40s; he was putting on a milky white long coat that covered the long-sleeved shirt he was putting on, and on his neck was hanging his stethoscope.

Once he came out, he looked at the family and faked a smile.

Without hesitating, the whole family rushed towards him.

"Doctor, how is my husband?" Cynthia asked first with a worried tone.

"Everything is alright; just calm down," the doctor replied, and immediately Cynthia got infuriated.

"What do you mean I should calm down? I'm asking how my husband is doing, and you are telling me to calm down," Cynthia replied angrily.

"Mum," Daniel called to Cynthia, and immediately she heaved a sigh and kept quiet.

"Can you please follow me to my office?" The doctor said this to them while heading to his office.

Once they got to the office, the doctor offered them a chair, on which they sat down while facing him.

After some seconds of silence, the doctor proceeded.

"Mr. Bernard had a cardiac arrest," the doctor informed them, and immediately they all widened their eyes in surprise.

"Fortunately, we have gotten him out of the danger zone," the doctor informed them, and they heaved a sigh of relief.

"So, doctor, he's fine now?" Jerry inquired.

"For now." The doctor replied, and they all furrowed their brows in confusion.

"What do you mean by for now?" Jerry inquired.

"Well, Jerry, I hope you are aware that your dad was suffering from advanced lung cancer. The doctor inquired.

"Yes, but he got back to normal after the surgery, right? Jerry inquired with fear written all over his face.

"Yes, but I'm sorry to inform you that it came back." The doctor informed me.

"What!" They all exclaimed in unison.

"Is he going to undergo the surgery again?" Cynthia inquired with a shaky tone.

"I'm afraid he can't." The doctor replied with a dejected tone. "It will be very dangerous because of his old age, and he has undergone surgery twice." The doctor explained.

"So you mean there's nothing we can do about it?" Jerry inquired, and the doctor shook his head negatively.

"All we have to do is pray that he gets better." The doctor explained, and immediately Cynthia started shedding tears, but Daniel and Jerry, being men, had to control their emotions.

"Can we go and see him?" Jerry asked the doctor.

"Yes, of course," the doctor replied. "But he's not yet awake." The doctor informed them, and they nodded and started exiting the office.

When they came inside the ICU room, he was still lying unconsciously on the bed while being placed on oxygen.

Immediately after Cynthia saw him, she started shedding tears while asking God not to allow her husband to die.

Jerry, on the other hand, once he saw the condition in which his father was, he allowed the tears he had been holding back to stream down freely.

He knew that his father wasn't dead yet, but how long was he going to leave with advanced cancer?

After staying in the hospital for another hour, Daniel and Cynthia informed Jerry that they would be heading home to change, and when they were back, he too would go home and change too. Without insisting, he accepted, and they started leaving.

After they left, Jerry stayed in the ICU room talking to his unconscious father; even though he knew that he wasn't hearing him, it just made him feel a little better.

As he was still talking to him, he heard a knock on the door, and without asking who it was, he asked the person to come in because, according to him, it was going to be Catherine.

When the door burst open, he was surprised to see Lucy instead of Catherine, and immediately his countenance changed.

She was also putting on a white long coat, and on her neck too was a stethoscope.

"Hello, Jerry," Lucy greeted him while approaching him.

"What are you doing here?" Jerry asked with an angry tone.

"What's wrong with you, Jerry? Were we fighting?" Lucy asked with a surprised tone, and immediately Jerry stood up from the bed where his father was lying down.

"No, we aren't fighting, but I need to be alone now." Jerry informed her with a straight face, and Lucy furrowed her brows at him.

"Are you avoiding me now?" Lucy asked Jerry while approaching him.

"Look, Lucy, the last time you visited me here in the hospital, you lured me into kissing, and that almost ended my relationship with Catherine, and I'm not ready for that again," Jerry informed her while stepping back, and Lucy smiled at him seductively.

"And you want to tell me that you didn't enjoy the kiss?" Lucy asked Jerry seductively.

"You are crazy, Lucy. That's the worst mistake I have ever made in my life," Jerry replied blankly. Lucy laughed maniacally while approaching Jerry, and before Jerry could realize it, she held him tight and placed a kiss on his lips.

As Jerry was trying to free himself from her tight grips, the door burst open, and Catherine came in.

Once Catherine came in and saw them, she stood at the door, staring at them like a statue.

Once Jerry, who was facing the door, saw her, he gathered all his energy and pushed Lucy away.

"Catherine, please, it's not what you think," Jerry said while approaching Catherine, but she shook her head in disbelief and started running outside, and immediately Jerry started running behind her while screaming her name.

Immediately they left, Lucy stood up from the ground and took her phone and dialed a number, and once the call was picked, she told the person the mission was accomplished and hanged up the call.

Afterwards, she cleaned the dirt on her white coat and started heading outside while smiling to herself.
