Lucien winced and bit his lip, struggling to contain his frustration. The sound of her crying upset him deeply and the fact that she called them 'tears of joy' was simply maddening.
He couldn't quite fathom out why the sound of her crying affected him so strongly or why it made him feel like he was being stabbed in the heart. All he knew was that he didn't like it.
Jena had heard him curse under his breath and for some reason, it sent a very genuine smile quickly forming on her face. It wasn't a smile of amusement or mockery but one of comfort. It was the assurance she needed to know that he cared, no matter how little. It didn't matter to her if that wasn't his intention. In the end, she chose to listen to what her heart was telling her.
"Joy most times move me to tears sir. Sometimes, I can feel so overcome with emotions when i'm happy that I start to cry." Jena elaborated.
"Is that even normal?" Lucien's brows furrowed.
"Maybe sometimes life doesn't have to be all about normality sir."
"This is just the least of the many privileges you'll be getting. If it's enough to bring tears to your eyes what more the others?"
Jena's lips slightly parted, no words came out of it. She felt so lightheaded about everything. The car, his words.. she just wished he would stop talking or else, her mind was definitely gonna blow.
"Crying should be reserved for pain not.." he stopped mid sentence, interrupted by the soft chuckle she made.
'What the heck!' he exclaimed, frustrated that she found it amusing. He was being serious but she found it amusing.
That's it! He was being serious over something as petty as this.
And he couldn't understand why
Jena's mood quickly shifted when she noticed his sudden silence. Not knowing what else to do, she decided to apologise.
"I'm sorry I..."
"I'll see you at eight tomorrow"
The call immediately got disconnected.
"Is he upset?"
Jena was confused as she realised that her chuckle might have been misunderstood. She picked up her phone to call him back but hesitated to, after nearly dialing the number. Actually she didn't know what to say, if he was even gonna answer.
She didn't know what to do too and she didn't also want to face his wrath tomorrow at the office. After thinking for a few more seconds, she decided to reach out to Anna.
"There goes the lover girlll" Anna teased immediately she picked the call.
"Stop it bes" Her cheeks were red already.
"So why did he call? What's the scoop?"
"Take a guess"
"Fine! Umm he wanted you guys to go out?"
"He's my boss!"
"Okayy umm he... he had a job for you?"
"It's 10pm"
"Then just tell me Jen i'm getting really curious"
"Okay fine i'll give you a hint.. It's a pretty sleek, black, four-wheeled surprise.. I think I already said too much."
"No way!!" She gasped in surprise. "A car!? Oh my gosh he got you a car?" Anna asked, filled with so much excitement and curiosity
"Mm hmm.. An Audi R8"
"My dream car! No freaking way! Geez bes I am so so happy for you." She said "Congratulations! I could even throw you a party"
Jena chuckled. "Thanks bes".
"I knew it all along Jen this guy is totally into you." The tone of her voice was filled with so much excitement.. like she was the one who got the car, not even Jena.
"Well bes, as much as I want that to be true, I know it's not. He mentioned it's just one of the perks i'll have as..."
"Now that's a total lie!" She immediately cut her off. "You've got to give me more than that Jen. We're talking about the richest business tycoon in the country, do you really think he'd just walk up to you and say, 'Hey Jena, I really like you'? "
"Actually he calls me rainbow... it's really cute" She blushed.
"He gave you a nickname!? What else do you need bes? I'm sure that secretary crap he gave you is just one of his ways of hiding his true intentions don't tell me you can't see that." Anna sounded so confident it made Jena wonder if she knew something she didn't.
Jena knew her best friend well enough to know that she was an expert in stuff like this and she really wanted to believe her but she feared the possibility of getting hurt in the end. After all, just because she might have fallen for him with such short notice doesn't mean he would too, right?
Like hello! He's the kind of guy who can have literally any girl he wants, when ever he wants. He's like this super debonair guy, surrounded by riches and fame. And poor Jena, she feels like she's living in the shadows, barely even recognized in the area she lives in, all thanks to her sister. She restricts her from going out, claiming it's for Jena's safety but deep down, she didn't give a damn about her safety and Jena knew. All she wanted to do was punish her and remind her that it's her house and anyone who lives under her roof, lives by her rules alone.
Most times when ever that feeling arises, she dismisses it by reminding herself that she was just his secretary and nothing more. But that wasn't enough to drive it away for good.
She surely didn't want to end up all broken and tangled in her own web of lies. The last thing she wanted was to break her own heart by herself.
'He might care a bit but he doesn't have feelings for you' , that's the conclusion her heart reached and now, she wanted to make sure Anna understood it too.
"I hear you bes and you might have a point, or not. Sir Lucien is my boss and frankly, I think his chances of falling for me are like zero and pretty thin." Jena tried to maintain a convincing tone while talking but unfortunately, it wasn't exactly convincing enough for Anna who already seemed to have made up her own mind.
"Open those pretty eyes Jen. Only then will you be able to see exactly what i'm talking about. I know you might think it's a bit too soon but trust me, one freaking minute is enough to make someone head over heels for you."
"I just don't want to end up broken like before..." Jena paused, her voice now shaky as she let out a heavy sigh.
"Remember Alex?"
