Chapter 16 - Sweet

The next day was quick to arrive and Jena was happy that she could finally go to work.

She cruised into the company in her new vintage car, feeling like the queen of the whole world.

As she arrived, she could see the utter surprise on each of their faces. Some whispered and gossiped, while some glared seriously with envy. It was unbelievable how she managed to make so many enemies in just half a day of working there.

The craziest part was that she didn't even know any of them and she was pretty sure they didn't know her as well. So she concluded that they were just being jealous and dramatic for no reason.

With a kind smile, she confidently made her way to her office. Even as she walked past them, she could still feel the weight of their stares. It almost made her flinch. But luckily for her, she managed to keep her cool and reached the office without any awkward mishaps.

As she entered her office, she was startled. She met Lucien sitting comfortably in her chair, legs crossed and his icy blue eyes fixed sternly on the door as if he were waiting for her arrival.

He was putting on his signature black coat that fitted him perfectly and he looked incredibly handsome in it.

"You're five minutes late." His cold voice was the first to greet her.

"Why are you late?" his voice echoed again, sending shivers down her spine.

"Um i'm really sorry about that sir. I promise it won't happen again" She muttered slowly.

"You better stick to that promise. If you don't, there will be consequences." He warned, briefly lowering his head. When he looked up again, a mischievous smirk adorned his face. "I can't stand it when people don't keep to promises." He declared, then turned to leave to his own office.

"Sir" Jena called out nervously, her voice barely above a whisper. She swallowed hard as he stopped to listen, his back still facing her.

"Uh.. Thank you so much for the sweet ride you got me I.."

"Never refer to my gift as 'sweet' young lady. Ever." his voice abruptly turned menacing as he emphasized the last word. "There's nothing sweet about a car"

Jena's long, thick lashes fluttered in amusement and her body wavered slightly. She silently thanked her lucky stars that she only had a view of his graceful back, sparing him from seeing her.

"Anything else? Rainbow?"

Her cheeks instantly flushed. "No sir. Just wanted to say thank you one more time for the... gift! I really love it"

"How's your hand?"

"It's perfectly healed sir. Wanna take a look?"

"Perfect." he snapped, brushing off her question as he stormed into his own office with his hands buried in the pocket of his coat.

She let out a sigh of confusion as she watched him leave, wondering why he was so grumpy this early in the morning.

Swiftly, she made her way to her desk and looked through the stack of files piled up, waiting for her. There were so many of them.

One by one, she sorted through each document, carefully arranging them in neat piles. After which she reviewed each file, ensuring that no detail went unnoticed. She made sure to cross-reference each information, double checking for accuracy.

After she finally managed to organise the files to her satisfaction, she flashed a satisfied smile at herself before she gathered the required ones and took them to Lucien's office for his approval.

"Hold on, Shadow Corporation?" Lucien interrupted, breaking Jena's flow as she excitedly shared the long list of proposals they had received in the last three days.

"Yes sir. They also sent us an email yesterday."

"I don't recall ever hearing about them." He remarked and took a brief moment to quickly search his memory and double check the information.

"Conduct a thorough background check on them and find out who the CEO is."

"Got it sir." She was almost saluting.

"And.. Make sure to cover those before my employees get distracted on their work."

"Cover wh.." Her eyes followed his gaze and she suddenly realised it fell on her.. Oh my!

A mischievous grin quickly formed on his face as he said, "Don't give me that look. You offered them to me." His eyes fixed on his monitor screen.

Jena wasted no time and swiftly made her way out of his office without uttering a single word, her cheeks turning crimson with embarrasment.

She quickly adjusted her shirt to cover the small piece of fleshy bosoms that was exposed through her V-neckline before anyone else sees it.

Talk about an awkward moment.

She was still reminiscing when, without warning, the doors of her office swung open, catching her off guard.

Her mood instantly shifted the moment she saw who the unexpected visitor was.

"Kayla!"

"Don't you dare utter my name like that."

Rolling her eyes, Jena said, "Seems like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning."

"I can't believe the nerve." Kayla replied, rolling her eyes back.

From her few past encounters with Kayla, Jena could tell for sure that she wasn't someone you could easily relate with. However, she still wanted to have a conversation with her.

So she sighed, calming her nerves down and said,

"Look, just incase you kinda forgot, you're in my office, okay? So since you're here, why don't we just have a peaceful chat. Just a normal girl to girl talk, hmm?"

"And what if I don't want that?"

"I'm not gonna take your time. I just wanna know why you're so mad at me."

Kayla let out a mocking laugh and replied, "You really wanna know?"

Ignoring her laugh, Jena said, "Your face doesn't ring any bells so yeah, I don't get why you're this mad."

"Well, imagine being the secretary to this super charismatic CEO for three freaking years and then, out of nowhere, you find this insane blonde sitting on a chair that once had your name on it. Tell me Jena, won't you get mad at her!?" Kayla queried. Her voice had a subtle edge to it causing Jena's eyes to widen at what Kayla actually meant.

"What are you talking about, Kayla?" Jena asked with creased brows, even though she knew exactly what Kayla was talking about.

"All i'm saying is that it's supposed to be me sitting there, trying my freaking best to win my boss's heart but no! I got fired Jena and surprisingly, you're the reason why." Kayla exclaimed, her voice dripping with frustration and resentment.
