Chapter 17 - Award

"I dont understand you Kayla can you.."

"You don't? Really?" She grumpily cut her off. "I'm just saying that I was boss Lucien's secretary before he fired me for no reason and then boom! you're the new secretary, technically making you the reason."

"But... Sir Lucien had told me that his secretary quitted and.."

"What was he supposed to say?" she cut her off again. "Now tell me, don't I have every reason to hate you?"

For a while, listening to her, Jena felt bad that Kayla had to lose her job as Lucien's secretary because of her.

Then on a second thought, it wasn't her who made the decision for him.

"No you don't" Jena snapped. Her voice now shifted from its usual calm zone. "It isn't in anyway my fault that you got fired so why pin all the blame on me?"

Kayla's eyes widened slightly. She couldn't believe Jena had the audacity to raise her voice after what she caused her to lose.

Shaking her head, Kayla uttered, "Excuse me? Jana..."

But before she could even finish, Jena jumped in and corrected her, saying, "Um please Kayla it's Jena.. with an 'e'. "

Kayla snapped.

She gritted her teeth in frustration as her blood immediately started to boil, leaving Jena shocked at her reaction towards a simple correction.

Jena thought she was over reacting.

"How... dare you" Kayla muttered, raising her right hand at Jena.

But before anything else could happen, the doors of Lucien's office swung open and he emerged from it.

Her whole body began trembling as she managed to lower her shaky hand that was suspended halfway.

Lucien shot her a deadly glare, and that alone was enough to cause her already trembling knees to collapse onto the floor.

Kayla was really scared of Lucien.

Actually everyone in this building was scared of Lucien.. expect one person.

He strictly warned her to stay very far away from Jena. Not only so she wouldn't try something stupid. He never wanted Jena to find out that she was Kayla's replacement. Not from her.

His aura was really deadly right now and Kayla felt suffocated by it. She knew she was in big trouble for this. She had disobeyed him and nothing gets him more angry than when his orders are defied.

"Didn't I warn you?" His voice was as cold as ice, echoing through the room.

"I.." She shivered in response.

"How dare you raise your hands at my secretary?" He asked again, his voice even icier than before and Kayla could feel shivers run down her spine once more.

"Boss I didn't mean to i.. i'm really sorry it won't happen again boss I promise." She managed to part her trembling lips, her heart racing with each word she managed to speak.

"Please don't fire me" she whispered lowly, unable to say it out loud for Jena to hear.

Lucien stood there in silence for a while, before shortly glancing at Jena out of the corner of his eye. She seemed lost in the conversation they carefully excluded her from.

With a quiet sigh, Lucien turned to Kayla and said, "Go wait for me outside."

Kayla was shocked.

"Okay boss" Kayla enthusiastically nodded and left immediately. She felt very relieved that she hadn't gotten fired. But then she started to wonder if Lucien had asked her to go outside just to avoid firing her in Jena's presence.

The thought made her anger resurface, realizing that Jena was the reason she almost lost her job.. the second time!

Jena and Lucien both stood there without saying a word to each other until Jena finally decided to break the silence.

"Did you really fire her just to hire me?" She asked with a curious tone.

"I did" Lucien replied plainly, without even turning to look at her. "Got a problem with that?" His voice was kept neutral, unlike how it was a few minutes ago, devoid of any emotions and his expression remained blank as usual.

"Why did you do that?" Jena asked, almost in a whisper.

She was supposed to be blushing right now, considering obvious fact, but honestly, she didn't even know how to feel.

Being Lucien's secretary was a great opportunity that she was sure literally everybody in the company and beyond would do anything to grab and she felt guilty for taking it away from her. Even though it wasn't her fault.

But then, the move Lucien made next shocked her completely.

He outrageously pulled himself closer to her, and gently lifted her chin upwards with his long, graceful fingers, as if he was about to kiss her.

Jena's eye widened in surprise, silently asking him 'what are you doing' through her expression.

Their eyes met and Jena could hear her heart pounding loudly in her ears.

"That was a brave one rainbow. Not many have the guts to question me around here." He whispered into her ears.

Jena swallowed in nervousness as his voice kept echoing in her mind.

His sudden movement caught her off gaurd. And the closeness between them felt more intimate than what one would expect from a boss and his secretary but he seemed completely unfazed by it, which was quite surprising to her.

"I think you deserve an award for breaking such a record, rainbow." He continued, adding to his sentence. His tone was cheesy but his face remained expressionless.

Jena could feel goosebumps slowly forming on her skin.

Swallowing, she asked, "Will I get an award for every record I break?"

Lucien smirked at her courage, then replied "That's if you can break them."

"Just tell me one"

Lucien was impressed by Jena's quick response. So he leaned in closer and said, "Make me fall inlove"

He paused, waiting to see her reaction. "No one has ever been able to make my heart beat for someone. Even those who tried ended up failing. So, do you think you..."

"I know I can"

She didn't let him finish and Lucien was once again, impressed.

Her big hazel eyes widened in realization of what she had just said as she tried to stop her hands from flying to her mouth.

Her eyelashes fluttered as she tried to catch a tiny glimpse of Lucien's face to note his expression.

He was wearing that wicked smirk on his face and Jena felt like the ground she was standing on could just open up and swallow her whole right there and then.

Biting her lower lip, she silently cursed and yelled at herself, trying to trap her impulsive words safely in her mouth. To avoid further potential regrets.
